The Salem R-80 Board of Education agreed Monday morning to award the contract for the R-80 Upper Elementary Expansion and Renovation to Gentry Construction of Houston in the amount of $942,619.00. The board then adjourned their special meeting.

The Dent County Commissioners held their regular meeting at the Dent County Courthouse Monday morning. At the meeting, Commissioners Bobby Simpson and J.J. Tune both reported that Districts 1 and 2 would not be grading Monday due to the rain.  Commissioner Simpson said that crews from District 1 would be checking road signs and catching up on routine maintenance.  Commissioner Tune said that brush would be cut on Dent County Road 318 and the rest of District 2 would be checking road signs, catching up on routine maintenance and crushing rock.  Dent County Clerk Janet Inman reported that as of Monday morning over 900 absentee ballots have been cast. The next meeting of the Commissioners will be Thursday morning at 9:00 and the meeting is open to the public.

The City of Salem Board of Aldermen held their regular meeting at the city hall council chambers Monday night. The board heard from John Lester from the Missouri Public Utility Alliance about their association and the positives it can do for the city of Salem including offering a Lineworker Apprentice Program where new or experienced linemen can be trained here in Salem. The estimated membership dues were $3,973 and the cost of the apprentice program is $1,370 a year per participant. The board took no action on the proposal. In old business, Water and Sewer Superintendent Jack Emery calculated that the actual cost to the city of the water that leaked from the RV section of The Commons was about $6,000. The board approved charging the Dent County Fall Festival Board that amount instead of the full price because they are a non-profit organization providing a service to the community. The bill was to be paid back in 18 equal monthly installments as well as keeping the current water usage bill up to date. Alderman Jim McDaniels asked about the Freedom Activity Center Fields project and Parks and Recreation Director Greg Nash said that DNR would be in Salem on Wednesday, November 15th, to check out the work done on the grant, but Nash felt that the work is complete. McDaniels asked about the soccer program and Nash said they had 240 participants, the most since he has been Parks and Recreation Director. The program will end this Saturday. McDaniels asked about the generator at the city hall auditorium and Mayor Gary Brown said that conduit and new wires are being run. Mayor Brown also reported that Fidelity Communications has made an offer to buy the cable system from Cebridge, but it has not yet been accepted. City Engineer Bill Huffman reported that the city sent out ten letters to residents who had dilapidated buildings or sheds, or had a home that needed to be secured, and seven of those owners have cleaned up the problem. Huffman said that two others plan to start the work soon and he has not yet reached the third person. Brown said that the city would be checking the water levels in the wells in the next two weeks. He said that he attended the pandemic meeting held at the TCRC last Thursday, and attended the Ozark Heritage Tourism meeting on Friday. Brown said that the city Christmas Party would be held on December 1st. The board then passed Resolution #7-2006 that set up the Salem Area Chamber of Commerce as the official Destination Marketing Organization for the city for cooperative marketing, brochures prepartion, leisure travel marketing and more. This will allow a tourism board from the chamber to ask for local tax dollars from the county-wide tourism tax committee, and then receive matching dollars from the state for an area marketing plan. The board approved the appointment of Joe Brand to the Library Board to replace Keith McDonald who resigned. The board then went into closed session.

Improve your defense, earn a Gold Glove. That was Cardinals' slugger Albert Pujols' thought entering this past season, and the hard work paid off. The first baseman picked up the first Gold Glove award of his career, joining teammate Scott Rolen on the National League list. It was Rolen's seventh award at the Hot Corner, placing him third on the all-time list. Only Hall of Famers Brooks Robinson (16) and Mike Schmidt (10) have more. Rolen led NL third basemen in fielding percentage this season, while committing 15 errors. 2006 was Pujols' third season at first base, and he worked tirelessly with third base coach Jose Oquendo to improve his defense. His award is the first by a St. Louis first baseman since Keith Hernandez took home the gold in 1982.

Junior college transfer Stefhon Hannah dropped in 25 points to lead Missouri's basketball team over Missouri-Rolla 105-67 in the Tigers preseason opener. Marshall Brown had 23 points and nine rebounds for MU. Matt Lawerence scored 12, and Hannah and Jason Horton led the team with six assists each.Billy Jackson scored three touchdowns and a two-point conversion as he rushed for 121 yards as the Salem Tigers shutout the Houston Tigers, 35-0. Salem finished with 282 rushing yards and held Houston to total of 91 yards in offense. Salem is now 4-1 and 2-1 in the SCA. They will be at Willow Springs Friday night.

The Seattle defense held Oakland to only 185 total yards of offense, sacked quarterback Andrew Walter nine times and the Seahawks shut out the Raiders 16-0 at a wet Qwest Field.
