The Salem Area Chamber of Commerce will host their annual Awards Banquet & Silent Auction on Thursday, November 13^th beginning at 6:30 p.m. at the Commons. The event will be catered by My Place Restaurant. Nominees for this year’s awards include for the “Outstanding Citizen of the Year” Award, Elizabeth (Liz) Gruendel. Liz a very active member of the Salem Area Community Betterment Association and is an elected member of the Dent County Fire District Board of Directors. Also nominated was Becki Godi who works at Progressive Financial Group. She is a Girl Scout leader, a board member for SACBA, a member of the FFA Alumni, a board member for the University Extension Council and helps with the Salvation Army. The third nominee for the “Outstanding Citizen of the Year” award is Doug Walter who is the Pastor of the Salem United Methodist Church. He was nominated for his level of involvement in many civic activities including currently being the co-chair of the Salem R-80 Bond Issue community group. He is a member of the Rotary and is on the board of the Show-Me Hope House.

Nominees for “Teen of the Year” are: Alivia Elliot who was the first runner up for Miss Dent County and a member of the Salem High School Cheerleading squad; Bethany Kellerman who attended Girls State, is the Student Council President at the Salem High School, and is also a member of the National Honor Society; and the third nominee is Katie Walden. Katie teaches violin and piano from home, and plays a huge role in the Oak Grove Baptist Church music department. Katie has represented Salem at the Missouri Community Betterment Conference as youth talent and has also performed the national anthem at Busch Stadium with her violin group prior to a Cardinals game.

Nominees for the Lifetime Achievement Award include Willie Chafin, a Navy Veteran who served two terms as Mayor of Salem, initiated the work for light poles on Main Street, worked on the Agriculture committee and worked with Kit Bond. Also nominated is Bonnie Gray is the mother of Melanie Wisdom and was married for forty years to the late Clifton Gray. Bonnie worked as a teacher’s aide for the Salem R-80 School District for fifteen years, is a member of the Red Hat Society and is a dedicated participant of the Relay for Life. The third nominee is Rebecca Mitchell, a Reading Teacher at Salem R-80 who has successfully coordinated Serendipity at the Upper Elementary School for 26 years, and serves on the Board of the Bonebrake Center. The Chamber wishes to congratulate all these amazing citizens on their nomination and look forward to the evening of the 13^th when the winners are announced. Tickets are $20.00 per person and can be purchased at the Salem Area Chamber of Commerce office at 200 South Main or from any board member. Deadline for ticket purchase is tomorrow. Route J will close for pipe replacement work today approximately 0.2 miles north of the Highway 32 intersection, near the old firehouse. The Missouri Department of Transportation (MoDOT) will partner with the City of Salem to perform this work. A full closure of the road will be necessary and drivers are asked to seek an alternate route between the hours of 7:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. Work zone signage will be in place to alert motorists approaching the work zone. Weather permitting, the work will be finished and the road reopened at the end of the day.

The Missouri Department of Transportation (MoDOT) will perform pavement repairs on Route H today and tomorrow. Work will begin at the intersection of Route 63 in Phelps County and extend to the intersection of Route C in Dent County. Crews and equipment will be located directly on the roadway between the hours of 7:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. Motorists are urged to exercise caution. MoDOT will also perform pipe replacement work on Highway 19 in Crawford County today and tomorrow, weather permitting. The work will take place in four locations on Highway 19 between the intersections of Highway 8 and Highway 49. Crews will be on the roadway from 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., weather permitting. Motorists are asked to exercise caution when traveling through this area. The “Trees and Trains” exhibit will be on display at the Ozark Natural and Cultural Resource Center beginning at Saturday, November 22^nd and running through Wednesday, December 24^th. The exhibit consists of lighted Christmas trees furnished and decorated by local individuals, organizations and businesses for the pleasure of others. This exhibit also features some miniature train displays and memorabilia. The Ozark Natural and Cultural Resource Center is open Monday through Saturday from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm and on Tuesdays from 9:00 am to 8:00 pm. For more information call the ONCRC at 729-0029.

The Salem Tigers football season came to an end Wednesday night in Fulton as they dropped a 20-7 decision to the Hornets. Four turnovers in the second half overshadowed a tremendous defensive effort by the Tigers who twice failed to score upon reaching the Hornet five-yard line. Cody Wofford scored the only touchdown for Salem from a yard out in the second quarter. Yousef Ibrahim finished with 107 yards rushing with 11 carries, while Landie Oliver had 70 yards rushing on just four carries. Salem finishes the year with an 8-3 record.

Ryan Getzlaf registered two goals and an assist, as Anaheim stayed hot with a 5-2 win over the floundering St. Louis Blues at the Honda Center. Andy McDonald and rookie Patrik Berglund scored for the Blues, who are 1-5-0 in their last six contests. Chris Mason allowed four goals on 26 shots and remains winless (0-4-0) on the season. The Blues will be in San Jose tonight to face the Sharks starting at 9:30 and you can hear the game on KSMO Radio.

St. Louis Cardinal’s catcher Yadier Molina was awarded his first career Gold Glove Award yesterday by the Sporting News.

St. Louis Cardinals pitcher Chris Carpenter underwent surgery Tuesday on his right elbow. The procedure included decompression and transposition of the ulnar nerve, and was performed by Cardinals team physician Dr. George Paletta. St. Louis first baseman Albert Pujols had the same operation done on October 13.

Kansas City Chiefs have agreed to terms with cornerbacks Ricardo Colclough and David Macklin on two-year contracts. They also agreed to terms with defensive end Wallace Gilberry on a three-year contract and signed running back Omar Cuff to the practice squad.
