The Dent County Commissioners held their regular meeting at the Dent County Courthouse Monday morning. At the meeting, District 1 Commissioner Bobby Simpson reported that no grading would be done this week, because conditions are too dry. Simpson did say, that brush would be cut on Dent County Roads 541 and 542, repair work would be done on the crusher and crews would be hauling rock.  District 2 Commissioner J.J. Tune reported that one-way grading would be done on Dent County Roads 318 and 336 and also in the White River Trace area on Dent County Roads 250 and 254.  Tune said that brush would be cut on Dent County Road 233 and a crew would be hauling rock from the creek. Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles wanted to remind everyone of the Rural Addressing Meeting that will be held tonight at 7:00 in the City Hall Auditorium.   Susan Cunningham from Spatial Data Research also attended the meeting to update the Commission on where they were with rural addressing and wanted to know if the Commission had any questions before Tuesday night’s public meeting. Cunningham will be at the meeting to answer any questions the public might have. David Massingale from the USDA Forest Service and Tom Stehn from MoDOT attended the meeting to inform the Commission that nine square miles of National Forest will be closed for 45 days, where the F-15 Fighter Jet went down last Friday. The forest service is closing this area off, because military personnel will be in the area searching for and cleaning up debris. Massingale wanted to stress that private property in this area would not be affected.  At the previous meeting Dent County Collector Dennis Medlock announced that 2007 Tax Bills will be mailed out November 7^th, but are available now if anyone would like to come in.  He also said that the Collectors Office will be open Saturday, December 1^st from 9:00 am to noon and will stay open until 5:00 pm on December 26^th, 27^th, 28^th, and 31^st.  The next meeting of the Commissioners will be Thursday morning at 9:00 and the meeting is open to the public.

An accident occurred Sunday evening at 5:15 in Dent County about five miles east of Salem on Dent County Road 517. According to the highway patrol report, a 1998 Chevrolet Blazer driven by 18-year old Christopher Blair of Salem was traveling southbound. Blair lost control on the gravel causing the Blazer to slide across the roadway into the left ditch where the Blazer overturned and struck a tree. Blair suffered moderate injuries as did a passenger, 21-year old Darrick Chapman of Salem. Both were taken to the Salem Memorial District Hospital by the Salem ambulance. No one was wearing a seat restraint at the time of the accident. The Blazer was totaled and removed from the scene by Whitakers Towing of Salem.

School will dismiss early on Wednesday, November 7^th, due to a teacher in-service. William Lynch will dismiss at 11:15, Salem R-80 Upper Elementary will dismiss at 11:20, Salem R-80 Jr. & Sr. High Schools will dismiss at 11:30 and the rural schools, Oak Hill R-I, Green Forest R-II, Dent-Phelps R-III and Northwood R-IV will dismiss at 11:45.

The Salem Board of Aldermen held their regular meeting Monday evening at the city hall council chambers. At the meeting, Molly Malone of Verkamp and Malone, CPA said that the audit report for the City of Salem was very good as the city showed a gain in total assets from $14,896,000 in 2006 to $15,243,000 in 2007. She said that revenues increased $23,794 and with depreciation expense, the city showed what would be termed in normal accounting as a “net profit” of $107,110 even though there was a decrease in cash of $204,188. The board approved the bid from Arkansas Electric of $24,642.15 for wire, cross arms, insulators and more for the three-phase line running from Highway 72 to Walker Street. The board also approved a bid of $11,462.80 for 22 Class 2 45- foot poles and four Class 2 50-foot poles from North Pacific of Dierks, Arkansas. They postponed any action on the closing of the alley in Grover’s addition until the alderman can look at the situation. Alderman Jim McDaniels inquired about the loose wires at the breaker box and water leak at the Al Brown Fields and they were to be addressed today. Alderman Bill Riley asked that the Christmas decorations be put up before the Thanksgiving holiday. Mayor Gary Brown reported that the bottle rocket tower painting should begin today and it should take about two weeks to finish. He also reported that he would like to hold a paint recycling on November 17^th as well as magazine recycling if he can find someone to accept the slick paper magazines. Brown also mentioned that Allen Kimrey has announced that he will accept the Assistant Emergency Management Director’s position offered to him. The board approved Bill #3110 that approved a settlement with Verizon Wireless for back taxes of $35,730.17 with a total of $1,786.50 of the settlement proceeds going to the Missouri Municipal League. They also approved Bill #3111 that allows Mayor Gary Brown to enter the City of Salem into an agreement with Kiowa Line Builders to install the three-phase line from Walker Street to Highway 72. The board approved making a budget adjustment of $54,100 from the Capital Improvement Stormwater fund to the Capital Improvement Street Fund to help pay for the overbudgeted asphalt work this past year. The board looked over a draft airport board ordinance and agreed to include it on the next meeting’s agenda. They postponed any action about requiring city citizens to hook up to city water, and postponed any action on requiring landlords to be responsible for unpaid water and sewer bills until they provide actual numbers of what that would total from outstanding bills. The board also reviewed a proposed right-of–way ordinance and that will be discussed at the next meeting. After approving the bills, the board went into closed session.

St. Louis Blues forward David Backes will miss four weeks with an injured left medial collateral ligament, team president John Davidson announced on Monday. Backes, who was given an MRI on Monday by Dr. Rick Wright at Barnes-Jewish Hospital, suffered the injury during the first period of the Blues' 3-2 loss to Chicago on Saturday. The Blues' second-round pick in the 2003 draft, Backes had appeared in 12 games with the Blues this season, recording two goals and two assists. The Blues also report that rookie defenseman Eric Johnson has been sent to Peoria for conditioning.

St. Louis Rams defensive end Leonard Little said Monday he expects to undergo surgery for a toe injury that forced him to miss the team's last game and will likely cause him to miss the remainder of the season. The Rams had a bye this past weekend and the team was hoping Little's toe would heal enough for him to play this Sunday against New Orleans. Little, though, said Monday a surgical procedure appears to be the only way to repair the problem. Little said the injury is a torn ligament on the side of his foot.

Funeral services for Jerry Dale Howard of Piedmont, MO, age 56, will be held Thursday morning at 10:00 at the McSpadden Funeral Home in Ellington. Visitation will be from 5:00 to 8:00 Wednesday evening. Interment will be in the Mann Cemetery in Annapolis, Missouri.

Funeral services for Louise Mc Daniel of St. James, age 89, will be held Thursday morning at 11:00 at the James & Gahr Mortuary in Salem. Visitation will be Wednesday evening from 6:00 to 8:00. Interment will be in the North Lawn Cemetery.
