The Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) announced that hunters checked 5,691 turkeys during Missouri’s fall firearms turkey season, which ran October 1st thru October 31st. Last year’s fall firearms turkey harvest total was 5,929 birds. Top harvest counties for the 2014 season were Greene with 165 turkeys checked, Franklin with 163, and St. Clair with 160. Adult gobblers accounted for 964 of the harvest, or almost 17 percent. Adult hens accounted for 1,588 of the harvest, or almost 28 percent. Juvenile gobblers accounted for 950, or almost 17 percent, and juvenile hens for 2,189 or about 38 percent. MDC sold 14,117 fall firearms turkey hunting permits for this past season, a 5-percent drop from last year. The Ozark region dropped by about 9 percent from last year with 784 birds. The southwest region dropped by about 4 percent from 2013 with 1,187 birds harvested. Fall archery turkey hunting continues until November 14th and then resumes again from November 26th through January 15th of next year.

The Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) also announced that young hunters ages 6 through 15 checked 18,091 deer during Missouri’s early youth portion of deer hunting seasons on November 1st and 2nd. Top counties for the early youth hunt were Osage with 448, Franklin with 393, and Howell with 376 deer checked. Last year’s harvest total for the early youth hunt was 18,676. Antlered bucks accounted for 11,481 of deer harvested, or about 63 percent. Button bucks accounted for 1,728, or almost 10 percent. Does accounted for 4,882, or about 27 percent. Up next for deer hunting in Missouri is the November portion of firearms deer season running November 15th through 25th. This portion normally accounts for about 80 percent of the state’s firearms harvest.

The City of Salem Utility Committee will hold a meeting, called by Chairman Molly C. Zettel, today at the T.C.R.C. meeting room located at 1200 West Rolla Road beginning at 1:00 pm. The meeting will be to consider an update on the status of the water/sewer rate study, utility bills due date and cut off policy, a budget or level payment plan as well as an assistance program. The meeting of the City of Salem Utility Committee is open to the public.

U.S. Senator Roy Blunt’s staff will host a Mobile Office on Thursday, November 6th from 10:30 am to 11:30 am at the Dent County Courthouse at 400 North Main Street. Mobile Offices are opportunities for Missourians to discuss their questions or concerns with the government one-on-one with members of Senator Blunt’s staff. 

Mark Twain National Forest in 2014 will join other federal agencies offering recreation fee-free days on public lands on Veterans Day. Free camping at non-reserved campsites Saturday, November 8th and Sunday, November 9th and free day use November 8th, 9th, 10th and 11th. Camping and day use fees will be required at all concessionaire-operated sites. Motorized trail permits and normal fees still apply for use of Chadwick and Sutton Bluff trail systems. Check with your Mark Twain National Forest Ranger District Office for more information. USDA Forest Service operates approximately 17,000 developed recreation sites nationwide.

Troop I, of the Missouri State Highway Patrol, recorded one traffic fatality during the month of September 2014. This is one less than for September 2013. There were 160 accidents with 65 injuries and two fatalities for 2013 compared to 151 accidents with 56 injuries and one fatality for 2014. The total fatalities for 2014 are eighteen, which is one more than last year. Reporting for September 2014, Crawford County with 23 accidents and six injuries, Dent County reported 13 accidents with 11 injuries and Laclede County reported 37 accidents with 13 injuries and one fatality. Also reporting were Maries County with 13 accidents and four injuries, Phelps County reported 36 accidents with 14 injuries and Pulaski County reported 29 accidents with eight injuries.

Jake Allen stopped 26 shots for his second shutout of the season to lift the St. Louis Blues to a 1-0 win over the New Jersey Devils in the front end of a home-and-home set. Vladimir Tarasenko had the only goal of the game for the Blues, who have won six straight contests. The Blues will host the Devils on Thursday.

St. Louis Cardinals catcher Yadier Molina was awarded a seventh straight Gold Glove on Tuesday when MLB announced the top fielders at each position. Molina has been a virtual lock to take home the NL's top catching honor for the better part of a decade. Only Ivan Rodriguez (13) and Johnny Bench (10) have won more Gold Gloves as a backstop. The Royals had three representatives on the AL side for the second straight year. Catcher Salvador Perez, first baseman Eric Hosmer and left fielder Alex Gordon all won at their respective positions for the AL champs. Gordon seized the honor for a fourth straight season.

Funeral services for Billie “Cleo” Amerine of Poplar Bluff, formerly of Cherryville, age 79, will be held at 1:00 Thursday at the Britton-Bennett Funeral Home in Steelville. Visitation will be held from 4:00 to 8:00 today. Interment will be in the Martin-Trask Cemetery in Cherryville.

Funeral services for Gladys Payne of Rolla, age 93, will be held Friday at 1:00 at the Britton-Bennett Funeral Home in Steelville. Visitation will be Thursday from 5:00 to 8:00. Interment will be in the Steelville Cemetery. Memorials may be given to the Steelville Cemetery.

Funeral services for Oliver W. Thoele of Salem, age 80, will be held Friday at 2:00 at the James and Gahr Mortuary in Salem. Visitation will be from 1:00 until service time. Interment will be in the Cedar Grove Cemetery.

Memorial service for Rachael Halbert of Cader, age 22, will be held Saturday at 1:00 at the Britton-Bennett Funeral Home in Steelville. Visitation will be from noon until service time. Memorials may be given to the family for funeral expenses.

Funeral services for Freida M. Craine, formerly of Rolla, age 92, will be held Monday at 1:00 at the James and Gahr Mortuary in Rolla. Visitation will be from 11:00 until service time. Memorials may be made to the Wounded Warrior Fund.

Memorial service for Eileen B. Westerholt of Salem, age 97, will be held at a later date. Arrangements under the direction of the James and Gahr Mortuary in Salem.
