The Dent County Commission met Monday morning for their regular meeting. At the meeting, Glen Durnbaugh from Dent County Road 2150 came in to thank the commission for installing the speed limit signs and he asked when the “Children at Play” signs would be installed. Commissioner Gary Larson said that he noticed that the signs weren’t up when he was out there and said they would be put up soon. Dent County Collector Dennis Medlock informed the commission of the end of the year extended hours at the Collector’s office. Hours will be extended on Thursday and Friday, December 26th and 27th; and Monday and Tuesday, December 30th and 31st, until 5:30. Medlock also reported that the office would be open on Saturday, December 14th and Saturday, December 21st from 9:00 AM to noon. In the road report, District 1 Commissioner Dennis Purcell reported that grading would be done on Dent County Roads 4080, 5600, 6070 and 6110. He also said materials would be added to county roads 5170 and 6470 as well as on county road 4100 which will then be graded. Purcell indicated that brush would be cut on Dent County Road 5170. District 2 Commissioner Gary Larson stated grading was going to be done on Dent County Roads 2240, 3180 and 4330, while materials would be added and grading done on county roads 2140 and 2150. Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles reported that he spoke with Presiding Judge Parker about the additional amount due to the juvenile court and he said that part of that was due to an attorney who did not submit his bills in a timely manner who then submitted a large bill. This helped cause a burden on the system and budgets. At the last meeting, Circuit Clerk Ruth Ann Williams visited with the commission about concerns in the Judicial Building with limited room and electrical updates that are going to be needed due to the state putting in new equipment. Custodian Emma Bressie also came in to discuss the lighting in the Judicial Building hallway and in the Circuit Clerk’s office. The commission approved getting an electrician to come in and take a look to see what is needed. The commissioners approved the quarterly transfer of $9,750 to the Assessment Operating Fund from the General Revenue Fund. Also, Prosecuting Attorney Andrew Curley came in to discuss the Special Prosecutor services bills, the Judicial Building and the jail needs. The next meeting will be Thursday morning at 9:00 at the courthouse and it is open to the public.

The Dent County Ladies Soup & Salad Dinner will be held tonight beginning at 6:30 pm at the First Baptist Family Life Center in Salem. The Dent County Fire Protection District Board of Directors will conduct their November meeting tonight beginning at 6:00 pm at the fire station. After approval of the agenda, the Board will review the minutes from the previous meeting before reviewing financial statements, the calendar and the reimbursement report. The Board will address any old or new business and hear a report from Fire Chief Brad Nash. The Board will then set their next meeting for December 3rd beginning at 6:00 pm at the fire station and then vote to go into executive session for the purpose of discussing personnel if needed. The meeting is open to the public.

A Gingerbread Workshop will be held this Saturday, November 9th from 10:00 in the morning until noon at the Ozark Natural and Cultural Resource Center at 202 South Highway 19 in Salem. The workshop will be held in the North Room of the ONCRC and will be limited to 30 participants. Julie Salyer will demonstrate gingerbread house making. The Salem Police Department released reports involving theft, an attempted break-in, shoplifting, a disturbance, property damage and theft of fuel. On Saturday, October 19th at 10:36 in the morning, an officer was detailed to the Fourth Street Mall in reference to a theft. The investigation revealed that someone took a backpack containing an iPad and a laptop computer, valued at $850, that a patron had inadvertently left in the store. On Sunday, October 20th at 11:25 at night, an officer was dispatched to a residence in the 300 block of East Bryan in reference to an attempted break in. That investigation revealed that a resident observed an unidentified person behind the residence and then run away from the residence. Upon inspecting a bedroom window, it was discovered there was damage to a screen. On Monday, October 21st at 7:30 in the evening, an officer was conducting an investigation of a shoplifting at Walmart. The investigation revealed that a 16-year old male juvenile had stolen merchandise, valued at $434.94, and attempted to sell the items on-line. The juvenile was taken into custody and later released to a parent. The report will be forwarded to the Juvenile Office. Later that same night at 8:56, an officer responded to a residence in the 300 block of North Park in reference to a disturbance. The investigation revealed that a 26-year old Salem female was intoxicated and disorderly. An off duty officer approached the suspect who was yelling profanities in the street and she assaulted the officer. She was taken into custody for peace disturbance, disorderly conduct, and assault on a law enforcement officer. She was then incarcerated pending the application for warrants. On Tuesday, October 22nd at 6:39 in the evening, an officer was contacted at the station in reference to property damage. That investigation revealed that someone damaged a light post and some children's toys in the yard of a residence in the 900 block of South Oak. The value of the damage is $165. That same night at 9:29, an officer was detailed to Casey's General Store on Highway 32 East in reference to theft of fuel. That investigation revealed that a 24-year old Salem female pumped $12.02 in fuel and left without paying. Further investigation led to the arrest of the suspect who was issued a summons to appear in court and released. Anyone with any information regarding the theft, attempted break-in, or property damage reports, which are still under investigation, is asked to contact the Salem Police Department by calling 573-729-4242.

The St. Louis Blues will be in Montreal tonight to play the Canadiens at the Bell Centre. The Blues are 8-2-2 on the year and sit at fourth place in the Central Division. You’ll be able to hear the game on KSMO Radio 1340 AM starting with the pre-game show at 6:00.

Funeral services for Russell O. Weller of Salem, age 87, will be held Wednesday at 1:00 at the Wilson Mortuary in Salem. Visitation will be from 11:00 until service time. Interment will be Thursday at 1:00 in the Missouri Veteran’s Cemetery in Springfield with Full Military Honors. Memorials may be made to the Wounded Warrior Fund.

Memorial services for Michael D. Thompson of Kansas City, age 66, will be Friday at the Freewill Baptist Church in Salem. Interment will be in the North Lawn Cemetery.  Arrangements are under the direction of the James and Gahr Mortuary of Salem.

Masonic services for Donald Dean Stagner of Strafford, age 71, will be held Saturday morning at 11:00 at the Wilson Mortuary in Salem. Memorials may be made to the Salem Masonic Lodge A.F. & A.M. #225.
