The City of Salem Board of Alderman will conduct their meeting tonight at the City Hall Council Chambers located at 202 North Washington beginning at 7:00 pm. After approval of the agenda in bids, the City had requested bids for the sale of the Old Middle School property and City Administrator Clayton Lucas will present the bids. Lucas will then update the Board on various items as well as Alderman Kenneth Nash, Jerry Randell, Hayden Powell and Philip Giacomelli. City of Salem Mayor, Gary Brown will then update the Board and address various issues concerning the City of Salem. The Board will then vote to go into Closed Session for the purpose of addressing litigation. The regular meeting of the City of Salem Board of Alderman is open to the public.

Godi's Excavating LLC won Business of the Year, employing up to 10 employees; Pizza Inn won Business of the Year, with 11 to 25 employees; Southwest Baptist University won Business of the Year and has from 26 to 50 employees. The Salem R-80 School District won Non-Profit Organization of the Year and Becky Smith from Salem R-80 won the Customer Service Award. An accident occurred at 1:09 early Saturday morning in Phelps County on I-44 Westbound at mile marker 190. According to the highway patrol report, the accident occurred when a 1991 Buick Century driven by 50 year-old John O’Neal of Sullivan was traveling eastbound in the westbound lanes when a 2001 Freightliner driven by 65 year-old Orville Hess of Salem, Illinois attempted to avoid O’Neal by driving off the right side of the road when O’Neal struck the trailer of the Freightliner. A 2005 Freightliner driven by 24 year-old Ranjit Pelia of Winton, California then attempted to avoid the accident and drove off the right side of the road. All vehicles overturned and O’Neal was ejected from his vehicle being pronounced dead at the scene. His body was taken to the Phelps County Morgue. Suffering minor injuries was Pelia who was transported to the Phelps County Regional Medical Center. The Buick and the 2001 Freightliner were totaled, while the 2005 Freightliner sustained moderate damage. The Freightliners were towed by C&C Towing, while the Buick was towed by Ron Dishman’s Towing.
An increase in Missouri’s 2012 fall firearms turkey harvest confirms population gains that turkey managers predicted and hunters hoped for.The Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) Telecheck database recorded a harvest of 8,498 turkeys during the fall firearms turkey season October 1st through the 31st. Top harvest counties were Webster with 225 turkeys checked, Laclede with 223, and Greene with 216. This year’s fall firearms turkey harvest is 1,421 more than last year, a 20-percent increase. MDC Resource Scientist Jason Isabelle credits weather in part for the jump in fall turkey harvest. Isabelle said the hatch of 2011 was considerably better than the previous four, and it bolstered turkey numbers throughout much of the state. This year’s hatch, with a statewide poult-to-hen ratio of 1.7 poults per hen, was identical to 2011, which was the best since 2002. MDC sold 16,413 fall firearms turkey hunting permits this fall, an increase of 9.3 percent from 2011. For the time being, the hatches of 2011 and 2012 represent considerable improvements in production and should serve to bolster turkey numbers throughout much of Missouri. For turkey enthusiasts, this is good news indeed.
The Missouri Department of Transportation has announced roadwork for our area this week. In Dent County, roadway maintenance will take place on Route DD between Route H and the end of state maintenance today through Friday. In Phelps County, roadside maintenance will take place on Route CC between Highway 63 and the end of state maintenance today through Friday. Roadway resurfacing in the eastbound lanes is complete on Interstate 44 between mile markers 179 and 185. Crews will begin paving the shoulders and portions of the eastbound on-ramps and off-ramps in the overnight hours. The project is scheduled for completion in December. The Dent County Fire Protection District Board of Directors will hold their regular meeting at the fire station on Tuesday, November 6th at 6:00 pm. In the meeting, the board will review financial statements, review the calendar and the reimbursement report. The board will discuss old and new business and Fire Chief Brad Nash will give the officer report and board reports. The board will then set the next meeting for December 4th at 6:00 pm at the Fire Station, go into executive session to discuss personnel, if needed and the adjourn. The meeting of the Dent County Fire Protection District is set for Tuesday, November 6th at 6:00 and the meeting is open to the public.

Six times Missouri crossed midfield Saturday in the second half only to be turned away by a staunch Florida defense. The Gators, meanwhile, found the end zone twice after halftime on a pair of big plays and came away with a 14-7 victory over the Tigers in the Swamp. Missouri (4-5, 1-5) was coming off its first-ever SEC win last week against Kentucky and lost for the third time in four games. James Franklin threw for 236 yards and was intercepted four times in defeat, while Kendial Lawrence scored the only Tiger touchdown in the second quarter. Missouri will play at Tennessee on Saturday.
Freshmen Stefan Jankovic and Negus Webster-Chan combined for 34 points and 12 rebounds as the former high school teammates led Missouri Basketball to an 86-60 victory over Missouri Southern to close out exhibition play on Sunday. Jankovic came off the bench and flourished on the perimeter, hitting 8-of-13 shots, including three from outside the three-point stripe to pace the Tigers with 20 points. His former high school point guard, Webster-Chan, earned his first start as a Tiger and scored 14 points to go with seven rebounds and three assists. Missouri will start regular season play against SIUE on Saturday.

Funeral services for Dorothy Lee Conley of Edgar Springs, age 79, will be held today at 1:00 at the Wilson Mortuary in Salem. Visitation will be from 11:00 until service time. Interment will be in the Victor Cemetery in Anutt. Memorials may be made to the Anutt Community Church.
Funeral services for Bessie Reynolds of St. James, age 85, will be held today at 1:00 at the James and Gahr Mortuary in St. James. Visitation will be from 11:00 until service time at the James and Gahr Chapel. Interment will be in the Asher Cemetery in rural St. James.
