At the 2010 Salem Area Chamber of Commerce Annual Awards Banquet, five awards were presented. The “Citizen of the Decade Award” went to Geriann Ball of the Bank of Salem, the “Customer Service Award” was presented to Sherry Lea from the Salem TCRC, the “Small Business of the Year Award” was earned by Pratt. Mitchell and Company, the “Non-Profit Business of the Year Award” went to the Riverways Pregnancy Resource Center, and the Salem Publishing Company was honored with the “Business of the Year Award.” A crowd of over 120 gathered for a delicious meal as well as a silent and live auction to help raise funds for the Salem Chamber of Commerce.

The Dent County Commissioners regular meeting was Thursday morning at the Dent County Courthouse. Commissioner Gary Larson was not able to attend the meeting due to a prior commitment. In the road report, District One Commissioner Dennis Purcell reported that repair work is being made on various chip and seal roads. Purcell stated that two men are working on a brush cutter and that work continues on the road and bridge department building. He said that grading was going to be done on Dent County Road 5530, and that the county received about 24 tons of road salt for the winter. They continue to stockpile sand for the winter months as well. Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles gave the District Two road report and said that there would be grading done in the Waterfork area. He said that workers are still replacing lost and stolen road signs, while others are hauling brown rock. Skiles reported that crews are working on a low water crossing approach on Dent County Road 2540. Skiles wanted to remind anyone interested in applying for a grant from the Region I Homeland Security Oversight Committee for emergency needs that the due date is December 1^st. He also wanted to remind everyone that due to the dry conditions, please refrain from any outdoor burning at this time, especially when there are winds present. Skiles mentioned that the Dent County Clerk and Treasurer balanced on all accounts. Brenda Gerlach, the new SEMA planner and area coordinator for Region I, came to the meeting to introduce herself to the commission, and asked them to participate in a nationwide exercise between May 16^th and 20^th that will simulate a 7.7 level earthquake at New Madrid from the New Madrid Fault. This exercise is being held to see how logistics, communication between parties and distribution of products and services is handled, not to mention the fan out of people from that region and where they go. She was also going to discuss this with Dent County Emergency Management Director Brad Nash, and the county will follow up with Nash to see if they will participate. The next meeting of the Dent County Commissioners will be Monday morning at 9:00 at the courthouse and the meeting is open to the public.

On Sunday, November 7^th at 7:00 am, Intercounty Electric will have a scheduled outage on one of their feeder circuits out of the West Salem substation. This substation is located about 2.5 miles west of Salem on Highway H. The circuit for which the outage is scheduled feeds initially north and east towards the Salem Hospital and then north and west along Highway 72. The outage is required for contract crews to perform work on the circuit coming out of the substation. The outage is scheduled to last about 3 hours.  

The Salem Eagles Club on Highway 32 West will be holding a karaoke contest Saturday with registration starting at 6:00 with a $10 entry fee. The judging will begin at 7:00 and 1^st prize is $150, 2^nd prize is $75, and 3^rd prize is $25. For more information, call Dave at 247-5587 or the Eagles Club at 729-6219 after 4:00. The emcee will be Mike Hill and everyone is welcome to attend.

Time changes this weekend. It is that time of year to “fall back” an hour. Either set your clock back an hour Saturday night before going to bed or first thing Sunday morning when you get up.

The Bonebrake Center of Nature and History will present “Interesting Missouri Place Names” Saturday night at 7:00 with Dr. Gerald Cohen from the University of Science and Technology. In over 40 years of study, Dr. Cohen has uncovered the stories behind the names of the communities of Fairdealing, Pulltight, Fee Fee, Old Dishrag and others. David Perron scored a goal and Jaroslav Halak turned away 25 shots as St. Louis stymied San Jose, 2-0, at Scottrade Center. Matt D'Agostini notched the other goal while Alex Pietrangelo added two assists for the Blues, who have won a franchise-record 12 straight home games dating back to last season. Halak registered his third shutout of the season and the 12th of his career to improve to a perfect 6-0-0 at home this season. The Blues will be in Boston Saturday night at 6:00 and you can hear the first period of the game on KSMO Radio.

The St. Louis Blues have placed defenseman Carlo Colaiacovo on injured reserve.Colaiacovo suffered a concussion in the club's 3-0 win over Nashville last Thursday. The Blues recalled Nathan Oystrick from Peoria of the American Hockey League to replace Colaiacovo on the blueline.

The Missouri Tigers will be on the road tomorrow at Texas Tech to face the Red Raiders. Missouri enters the game with a 7-1 record and 3-1 in the Big 12 North. You can hear that contest at 7:00 on KSMO Radio.

The Cardinals finalized their coaching staff for the 2011 season, announcing that Derek Lilliquist has been named the bullpen coach. Lilliquist, 44, was the pitching coach for the high Class A Palm Beach Cardinals from 2004-07 and also coached at low Class A Peoria in 2003 and at rookie-level Johnson City in 2002.

The Atlanta Braves claimed utilityman Joe Mather off waivers from the St. Louis Cardinals on Wednesday. Mather, 28, played in 36 games for the Cardinals last season and batted .217 with three RBI. Over 91 games with Triple-A Memphis, he hit .275 with 10 home runs. He has played at first base, third base and all three outfield positions over his two seasons in the majors, both with St. Louis.

Former Mizzou Basketball standout J.T. Tiller was selected by the Idaho Stampede with the first pick of the eighth round in the 2010 NBDL Draft. Tiller, who starred four seasons at Missouri, finished his career fifth all-time with 131 games played, eighth with 166 career steals and 10th with 332 assists. The Idaho Stampede are affiliated with the Portland Trailblazers and Denver Nuggets of the NBA.

St. Louis Rams quarterback Sam Bradford has been named as one of two NFL's top rookies for the month of October. Bradford, who was the top overall pick out of Oklahoma, claimed the offensive honor for leading the Rams to a 3-2 mark during the month. He completed 58.3 percent of his tosses for 1,019 yards with seven touchdowns and three interceptions while accumulating an 81.1 passer rating. Bradford has guided St. Louis to a 4-1 home record and is the only rookie signal-caller selected No. 1 overall to win four of his first five starts at home since 1967, the first year of the common draft.
