Acting United States Attorney Michael W. Reap announced that 52 year-old James L. Kelley, Sr. of Salem pleaded guilty to illegal possession of a firearm. Kelley pleaded guilty to one felony count of being a felon in possession of a firearm. Due to his previous criminal history, law to own or possess firearms forbids him.  He appeared before United States District Judge Carol E. Jackson. Kelley now faces a maximum penalty of ten years in prison and/or fines up to $250,000, when he is sentenced on February 2, 2010. Reap commended the work on the case by the Salem Police Department and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives; and Assistant United States Attorney Cristian M. Stevens, who is handling the case for the U.S. Attorney’s Office.

An accident occurred at 3:15 Monday afternoon in Dent County on Highway 32 about three miles east of Salem. According to the highway patrol report, a 1992 Chevrolet driven by 21-year old Jennifer Smith of Salem was stopped for a school bus offloading and was struck from behind by a 1989 Chevrolet driven by 21-year old Daniel Decker of Salem. Smith suffered minor injuries and was taken to the Salem Memorial District Hospital by Salem EMS. Smith was the only one wearing a seat restraint at the time of the accident. Both Chevrolet’s sustained extensive damage and were towed from the scene by Whitakers Towing of Salem.

Dent County Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles reported that the Department of Health and Senior Services has issued a rabies alert for Dent County. The latest testing of animals found that all three skunks tested were positive for rabies, and that one cat out of seven tested also had rabies. Tests of 40 animals over the last five years have not resulted in any positive results for rabies. The heightened alert will be lifted after 60 days if there is a significant reduction in affected animals. With the heightened alert, people should avoid contact with wild animals and stray pets; make sure that pets are vaccinated for rabies and don’t let them run loose; do not keep wild animals or use them as pets; notify the animal control officer or the health department if you suspect that an animal has rabies or you find a bat in your home; and if bitten or injured by a wild animal, seek immediate medical attention. The animal control officer can be contact through the Salem Police Department at 729-4242, and the Dent County Health Department number is 729-3106.

The Dent County Sheriff’s Department released their reports. On Sunday, October 25^th at 8:20 in the morning, a store clerk from Casey’s located on Highway 19 South called the Sheriff’s Department to report a man believed to be intoxicated, had been it the store staggering and then got in his vehicle to drive. The vehicle was described as a black Pontiac G6 bearing Illinois license plates. The Pontiac was observed straddling the centerline, then crossed over it’s lane and almost hit the curb on the east side of Highway 19 before swerving back to the middle of the northbound lane. The vehicle was stopped just north of Highway 19 at Fifth Street in Salem. When the driver was asked why he was having such a problem driving, he stated he had been to Spook Stock and was very tired. When asked to step out of the vehicle he forgot to put the car in park and it rolled about ten-foot before he found the brake. Upon exiting the vehicle the drive almost fell. He agreed to take the standardized field sobriety tests and was then placed under arrest for operating a motor vehicle in an intoxicated condition. The deputy searched the man for any contraband prior to placing him in the patrol car. The driver had a small amount of a green leafy substance in his right jacket pocket that he admitted was marijuana. At 1:50 that afternoon, the Dent County Sheriff’s Department received a call from Whitakers Towing about a black 2005 Pontiac G6 that drove away heading north on Highway 19. A deputy turned to follow the vehicle, saw the vehicle cross the centerline and drive over into the on-coming traffic lane. The vehicle was stopped on Highway 19 at County Road 4110. On Saturday, October 31^st at 2:17 am, the Dent County Sheriff’s Department received a call about an individual attempting to stab several people at a residence on Highway 19 South. Upon arrival a deputy found a female inside the residence with a cut hand and it was reported that a male ran out the back door upon their arrival. The female’s right hand was bleeding and was wrapped with a blood soaked cloth. The right thumb was checked by EMS and she was taken to the Salem Memorial District Hospital. While in route to the hospital and at the hospital, the female had contact with the male subject via cell phone. The Deputy also spoke with the Child Abuse Neglect Hotline and reported that incident to them as a mandated report, due to the fact that her four-month old daughter was in the bedroom at the time of the incident. When asked if she wished to press charges, she stated she did not know and that she was not in any condition to make that decision at that time.

The Dent County Health Center will be holding an H1N1 flu vaccination clinic on Thursday, November 5th from 8:30 AM to 4:30 PM at the Salem Freedom Activity Center. There is no charge for the vaccinations. Both H1N1 shots and the FluMist will be availble. Only high risk individuals identified by CDC will be eligible for the vaccine. The Salem Memorial District Hospital has put a new restriction on visitors due to the flu. No one under the age of 14 will be allowed to visit a patient until further notice.

The Salem Tigers will host the Fulton Hornets tonight at 7:00 p.m. for the first round of football play-offs. The cost of admission for this playoff game is $5.00 for persons in kindergarten through adult. The cost of admission is established by MSHSAA. No faculty/staff ID cards, or senior citizen passes will be accepted for admission.
