The Kansas City Royals have declined the option on the contract of Billy Butler, making the designated hitter a free agent. Butler has spent his entire eight-year career with the Royals and went through the difficult times with the club before this season's surprising run to the American League pennant. He was 11-for-42 in the postseason, which ended with a Game 7 loss to San Francisco in the World Series. The 28-year-old veteran hit just nine home runs in 2014 and drove in 66 runs while batting .271. Seven other Royals filed for free agency and they include outfielder Norichika Aoki, pitchers Scott Downs, Jason Frasor, Luke Hochevar and James Shields, designated hitter Raul Ibanez and utility infielder Josh Willingham.
The St. Louis Cardinals exercised their contract option on starting pitcher John Lackey for the 2015 season on Thursday. Lackey, who was acquired from Boston at the trade deadline, will earn the league minimum $500,000 in 2015 after making $15.25 million in each of the last three seasons. Five Cardinals filed for free agency after the World Series. Those five players are infielder Mark Ellis, pitchers Justin Masterson, Jason Motte and Pat Neshek and catcher A.J. Pierzynski.
