Arsonists are suspected of setting several November 1^st Mark Twain National Forest Salem District fires. According to Thom Haines, Mark Twain National Forest Salem District ranger, a total of more than 5,000 acres were burned November 1^st. Haines is asking that if anyone knows who set these fires to please contact the Mark Twain National Forest Salem Ranger District Office at 573-729-6656 or the toll free arson hotline at 1-800-392-1111. At present, no homes are immediately threatened. The fire has spread to some private lands. Nearby neighbors of the Forest have been notified of the situation. At approximately 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, November 1^st, several smokes were sighted on and over Mark Twain National Forest’s Salem Ranger District. By 4:00 p.m. that day, three active fires were located in southern Dent County near the Shannon County line. The fires have combined and there is now one fire. Thirty-five firefighters, 5 dozers and 4 engines are currently assigned to the fire. On Wednesday, November 2^nd the Forest Service briefed City of Salem officials on the status of wildfires being fought and requested authorization to set up a command post at the Salem Memorial Airport, which was approved. For this reason, National Forest Service aircraft, equipment, and personnel will be on site at the airport as long as is necessary to bring the wildfires in the area under control. Mark Twain National Forest is the largest public land manager in Missouri with 1.5 million acres in 29 counties in southern and central Missouri. Mark Twain National Forest’s mission is to continue to restore Missouri’s great outdoors and maintain a healthy, working forest.

The Salem Police Department has released their reports. On Tuesday, October 25^th at 11:15 at night, an officer was contacted at the police station in reference to a theft of fuel from Casey’s General Store located at 600 South Macarthur. The investigation revealed that two unidentified males in a primer gray GMC Sonoma pumped $134.74 on two separate occasions and left without paying for fuel. On Wednesday, October 26^th at 3:20 in the afternoon, an officer was dispatched to Wal-Mart in reference to a shoplifter. The investigation led to the arrest of a 34-year old female of Salem for stealing merchandise valued $214.27. She was issued a summons to appear in court and released. On Saturday, October 29^th at 1:07 early in the morning, a vehicle was stopped for a traffic violation. The investigation of the stop led to the arrest of a 25-year old female of Salem for driving while intoxicated. She was incarcerated and will be issued summons to appear in court upon her release. On Sunday, October 30^th at 12:08 in the morning, an officer was dispatched to a residence in the 1100 block of West Franklin Street in reference to a burglary. The investigation led to the arrest of a 25-year old male of Houston, a 22-year old female of Salem, and an 18-year old male of Salem for burglary and property damage. They were incarcerated pending the application for warrants. On Monday, October 31^st at 12:45 in the afternoon, an officer was detailed to Salem Pole and Timber located on Highway 32 West in reference to a burglary. The investigation led to the arrest of an 18-year old male of Salem and a 16-year old male juvenile of Jadwin for burglary and property damage. The 18-year old was incarcerated pending the application for a warrant and the juvenile was released to a custodian. The report will be forwarded to the juvenile office for further review. Later that night at 9:12, an officer was dispatched to the 1000 block of South Hickory Street in reference to an assault. The investigation revealed that a 20 year-old female of Salem had assaulted a 16 year-old male of Salem. The Dent County Fire Protection District has released several miscellaneous reports. On Tuesday, October 25^th at 8:17 in the evening, twelve firefighters prepared a landing zone at the fire station. They provided manpower and were done at 8:36. Later that evening at 8:19, twelve firefighters responded to 603 South Grand Street for an EMS incident. They provided first aid and checked for injuries and were back at the station at 9:03. On Wednesday, October 26^th at 11:34 in the morning, three firefighters prepared a landing zone at the fire station. They provided manpower, medical services, and crowd control and were done at 11:37. On Friday, October 28^th at 9:00 in the morning, six firefighters responded to a 2 family dwelling at 902 South Carty Street to assist the EMS. They provided emergency medical services and were back at the station at 9:29. Later that morning at 11:44, five firefighters prepared a landing zone at the fire station. They provided manpower and were done at 12:35.

The Dent County Health Center would like to encourage those persons who have not gotten their flu shot to do so before the holiday travel and celebrations begin.  Protect yourself and your loved ones from influenza and its complications. Flu shots are given on a walk-in basis Monday thru Friday at a cost of $25. The Health Center will bill Medicaid and Medicare, but you must bring your card. The Health Center is located at 601 S. The Salem Area Chamber of Commerce and the City of Salem invites individuals, businesses, and organizations to particiapate in the 2011 Chirstmas parade on Saturday, December 3^rd. This year’s theme is ‘An Animated Christmas’ and it will start at 5:30. The parade route runs from the old fairgrounds to the Dent County Courthouse. No ATV’s will be allowed in the parade. You can get an entry form and rule sheet at the Chamber Ofiice at 200 South Main Street. Entry forms need to submitted by November 23^rd. The University of Missouri basketball team made 14 three-pointers to propel the team as they ran past Truman State University 87-48 in exhibition play Wednesday night at Mizzou Arena. Mizzou built its lead to as many as 41 points in the second half. Senior Marcus Denmon led four Tigers in double figures with 23 points on 7-of-10 shooting from behind the arc. Junior Michael Dixon scored 15 points and dished out a game high eight assists, senior Matt Pressey notched 12 points, and senior Ricardo Ratliffe added 10 points and seven boards. Additionally, redshirt freshman Kadeem Green grabbed a game high 11 rebounds. Mizzou plays Central Missouri in their final exhibition game on Monday.

The St. Louis Cardinals announced that the team will play an exhibition game against the Springfield Cardinals, their Double-A affiliate, on Monday, April 2^nd, 2012 at Hammons Field in Springfield. The Cards were unable to play the Springfield Cardinals this past spring due to the game getting rained out.

Funeral services for Iona Mae Stephens of Salem, age 91, will be held Friday at 11:00 at the James and Gahr Mortuary in Salem. Visitation will be tonight from 5:00 to 7:00 at the chapel. Interment will be in the New Hope Cemetery in Salem. Memorials may be made to the New Hope Cemetery.

Funeral services for James “Jim” L. Martin of Steelville, age 72, will be held Saturday at 11:00 at the Britton-Bennett Funeral Home in Steelville. Visitation will be Friday from 5:00 to 8:00. Interment will be in the Martin-Trask Cemetery in Cherryville. Memorials may be to the Martin-Trask Cemetery.

Funeral services for Lloyd Tyree of Salem, age 91, will be held Sunday at 4:00 at the Salem United Methodist Church. Visitation will be held from 2:00 until time for the service at the church. Interment will be in the North Lawn Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Salem United Methodist Church. All arrangements are under the direction of the James and Gahr Mortuary in Salem.

Funeral services for Lloyd Franklin Wilson of Jerome, age 63, are incomplete at this time but under the direction of the James and Gahr Mortuary in Rolla.
