The General Election was held Tuesday throughout Missouri, and in Dent County, almost 44% of the registered voters totaling 5,236 ballots were cast in the election. The unofficial results were provided by the Dent County Clerk’s office. There was only one local contested race and the other races or issues were either regional or statewide. All totals are with all precincts reported for the state or region as well as Dent County. An asterisk (*) indicates the winner.

In Closed Session on Thursday, October 28th, the Salem R-80 Board of Education hired Debbie Hogan as high school secretary; Jenifer Baker, Ryan Billington, Crystal Dennison, and Nick Frillman as paraprofessionals, Desirae Terrill as an LPN; Bobbie Gotchal in food service; Anthony Miller, Dustin Miller and Michael Sturdivant as custodians, and Jimmie Hanger, Donald Bell, and Frank Brooks as bus drivers.

Monday night after the closed session of the City of Salem Board of Aldermen, Resolution #4-2010 that would authorize the mayor to execute an agreement between the city and Accubak Data Systems for the use of the water tower to provide wireless broadband access points was approved by the aldermen with a 3-1 vote. The board will tour Royal Oak Charcoal on November 9th, and they have set their next regular meeting time at 6:00 on November 15th. The meeting was then adjourned.

The Salem Police Department released their reports involving property damage, active warrant, assault, and theft. On Monday, October 25th at 1:55 p.m. an officer was detailed to the 500 block of West Highway 32 in reference to property damage. The investigation of the report revealed that a person or persons unknown damaged the windshield of a 2003 Ford Explorer. The value of the damage is $250. Later that afternoon at 3:30 in the afternoon, an officer took a 19-year old male of Salem into custody on a warrant from the City of Salem. He was incarcerated at the Dent County Jail. On Tuesday evening, October 26th at 10:25, an officer was dispatched to the 900 block of South Carty Street in reference to an assault with a knife. The investigation led to the arrest of a 30- year old male of Salem for holding a knife up to a 58-year old female of Salem. He was incarcerated pending the application for a warrant. On Friday morning, October 29th at 8:11, an officer was detailed to the 900 block of North Park Street in reference to a theft. The investigation revealed that a person or persons unknown took clothing valued at $515 from a laundry room. Time changes this weekend. It is that time of year to “fall back” an hour. Either set your clock back an hour Saturday night before going to bed or first thing Sunday morning when you get up.

The Dent County Schools, Salem R-80, Oak Hill R-I, Green Forest R-II, Dent-Phelps R-III and Northwood R-IV, will be closed on Friday, November 5th due to a Teacher Professional Development Day. Classes will resume on Monday, November 8th.

The Bonebrake Center of Nature and History will present “Interesting Missouri Place Names” Saturday night at 7:00 with Dr. Gerald Cohen from the University of Science and Technology. In over 40 years of study, Dr. Cohen has uncovered the stories behind the names of the communities of Fairdealing, Pulltight, Fee Fee, Old Dishrag and others. The 2010 Salem Area Chamber of Commerce Awards Banquet, Silent Auction and regular Auction to be held on Thursday, November 4th at the Salem City Hall Auditorium beginning at 6:00 pm. Tickets are available at the Salem Chamber of Commerce office at 200 South Main Street for $20 per person. At the banquet, the winners of the Business of the Year, Non-Profit Organization of the Year, Small Business of the Year, the Customer Service Award and Citizen of the Decade will be announced. The Dent County Health Center has flu shots, available daily Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. The shots will cost $25. They will accept cash or check, or they will bill Medicaid and Medicare Part B, but you will need to bring your cards with you. The St. Louis Blues will host the San Jose Sharks Thursday night at 7:00 at the Scottrade Center. The Blues are 5-0 at home this year. You can hear the game on KSMO Radio.

The Missouri Tigers will be on the road this week at Texas Tech to face the Red Raiders. Missouri enters the game with a 7-1 record and 3-1 in the Big 12 North. You can hear that contest at 7:00 on KSMO Radio.

Funeral services for Lester Vernon Williams, Jr. of St. James, age 82, will be held today at 11:00 at the Wilson Mortuary Chapel in Salem. Visitation will be from 10:00 until service time Wednesday morning. Interment will be in the Cedar Grove cemetery with Military Honors. Memorials may be made to the Missouri Veterans Home in St. James.

Funeral services for Marie Huffman of Rolla, age 95, will be held today at 10:00 at the Null and Son Funeral Home. Interment will be in the Carty Cemetery in Dent County. Memorials may be made to the Carty Cemetery.

Memorial services for Stephen L. Bates of Salem, age 59, will be held at a later date. Cremation arrangements are under the direction of the Wilson Mortuary in Salem.

Funeral services for Mary Deloris Hogan of Bullfalo, MO, age 90, will be held Friday at 1:00 at the Wilson Mortuary in Salem. Visitation will be from 11:00 until service time. Interment will be in the North Lawn Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Family.

Memorial services for Dylan Jay Pogue of Salem will be held Friday at 7:00 at the Wilson Mortuary in Salem. Visitation will be from 6:00 until service time.

Funeral services for Joseph William Baker of Salem, age 89, will be held Saturday at noon at the Wilson Mortuary in Salem. Visitation will from 10:00 until service time. Interment will be in the Dry Fork Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Dry Fork Cemetery.

Memorial services for Walter W. Salts of Salem, age 55, will be held Monday at 3:30 at the Wilson Mortuary in Salem.
