The Salem Board of Aldermen held their regular meeting Monday evening at the City Hall Council Chambers. The board heard from Eugene Abbott about water coming into his yard off Gibbs Street from a broken piece of concrete after the yard has been filled in by the city. The mayor said that the city would check that out as well as water coming off Orchard. The board approved the request from Terry Madsen to hold a New Year’s Eve dance at the Salem City Hall Auditorium under the same conditions as the Friday Night Music Night with donations only received by the band. The board approved a three–year lease/purchase through Town and Country Bank for $61,990 for a new truck, dump body, spreader boxes and snow plows that would begin in July of 2010 at an interest rate of 3.99%. They also approved a bid from Stoddard Equipment of Ozark for a new fuel system at the airport for $22,255 that includes tank service. Alderman Jim McDaniels questioned the utility policy that requires utility service in a husband and wife’s name be terminated if they want to just put the service in one person’s name. The one person would then have to pay the current deposit and re-establish service. McDaniels feels that policy is too complicated and needs to be reviewed. Mayor Gary Brown reported that the recycling day brought in $491 as the city collected 34 tires, 32 monitors and 28 TV’s. The tires have been removed and the electronics collected filled two trailers. He also said the city is waiting on the recycling bins which have just been shipped. He said that the electric apprentice program would be ending December 13^th and the men will be taking their final test in Rolla. He said that the tree trimming truck is out of service for repairs to the “knuckle” that could cost about $5,000. He also said that the city met with the Liberty Green Renewables about the bio-mass system and that they are putting it online in Perryville that will generate 32 megawatts. Brown went on to state that he and the attorney would need to meet in a closed session to review the electric superintendent job applications. The board approved the next Municipal election to be held on April 6^th for the purpose of electing a mayor, an east ward alderman and a west ward alderman. The board also approved leaving the pay for alderman at $100 per meeting and $550 a month for the mayor plus authorized expenses. The board then reviewed the July 2009 through October 2009 financials for the city and discovered that the sales tax revenues are down about $30,000 and capital improvement sales tax funds are down about $15,000, that interest income is way down, and that the health insurance and retirement expense are up. Otherwise most accounts are inline where they are supposed to be for one quarter of the fiscal year. After the bills were approved the board went into closed session.

The Dent County Commissioners held their regular meeting at the Dent County Courthouse Monday morning. In the road report, both commissioners reported that workers will be patching washouts and repairing roads from the rains of last week. They will be hauling rock where needed in District 1, and to Dent County Roads 2590, 3180, 4060 and 4480 in District 2. The regular grading rotation will begin in both districts again on Wednesday. Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles reported that NHI Insurance adjusters have sent figures to the county for reimbursement from the May 8^th storm. The biggest issue is over the radio tower where the value was $11,140, but the insurance adjusters have depreciated $3,340 leaving a balance of $7,800. Skiles said that he would contact Mike Elliot to see if anything can be done on that figure. The insurance adjusters awarded $10,200 on the roof and the total claim reimbursement to the county was for $19,973.Dent County Clerk Angie Curley reported that budget cuts announced by the state will force the reimbursement rate for the Dent County Assessor’s office to be reduced from $5.99 per parcel to $4.00 per parcel. That is a 33% reduction that can be expected in the budget year 2010. The commission then attended the swearing-in of the new Dent County Prosecutor Brandi Baird in the courthouse. At the last meeting, the commissioners approved renewing the Cox Healthcare Insurance plan that has a $2,500 deductible at the cost of $350 per employee per month with the employee responsible for the first $1,000 of the deductible and the county responsible for the remaining $1,500 of the deductible. Employees may upgrade their plan at their expense to $1,000 or $500 deductibles. The next meeting of the Dent County Commissioners will be held Thursday morning at 9:00 at the courthouse and the meeting is open to the public.

The Salem Memorial District Hospital has put a new restriction on visitors due to the flu. No one under the age of 14 will be allowed to visit a patient until further notice.

The Salem Tigers will host the Fulton Hornets on Wednesday, November 4 at 7:00 p.m. for the first round of football play-offs. The cost of admission for this playoff game is $5.00 for persons in kindergarten through adult. The cost of admission is established by MSHSAA. No faculty/staff ID cards, or senior citizen passes will be accepted for admission.
