The Dent County Commissioners met for their meeting at the Dent County Courthouse Thursday morning. In road reports, District 1 Commissioner Dennis Purcell reported that grading would be done on Dent County Roads 4080, 5440 and 6500. He went on to say that material would be hauled to Dent County Roads 5520 and 6280 while brush would be cut on Dent County Road 5610, also known as the Turtle Loop. District 2 Commissioner Gary Larson reported that grading would be done on Dent County Roads 3250, 3260 and 5260. He went on to say that material would be hauled and grading would be done on Dent County Road 2135, while brush would be cut on Dent County Road 2500. He also reported that one man would be hauling creek rock. Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles reported that he would be attending the Region I Homeland Oversight Security Committee (HOSC) meeting in St. James and that he would be replacing Dennis Purcell as a primary member of the HOSC. Dent County Clerk Angie Curley reported that absentee voting continues during normal business hours in her office through Monday, November 5th and absentee voting will also be held this Saturday, November 3rd from 8:00 am until 12:00 (noon). She stated that the polls will be open on Tuesday, November 6th at 6:00 am and will close at 7:00 pm. She went on to say that sample ballots as well as the “Fair Ballot Language” concerning the amendments and propositions on the ballot are available at her office if anyone would like to pick one up. The Commission agreed to seek local bids for financing for two graders, priced at $94,978 each, on a 5-year lease purchase and those bids are due back and will be opened on Monday, November 26th at 10:00 am. At the last meeting, phone bids were taken for propane and the bid was awarded to Amergas for $1.39/9. The next meeting of the Commissioners will be Monday morning at 9:00 at the courthouse and that meeting is open to the public.
The Salem Police Department released their reports of theft and property damage. On Monday, October 22nd at 6:48 in the morning, an officer was contacted at the station in reference to a theft from a vehicle. The investigation revealed that someone entered a 2001 Ford Escort parked in the 700 block of North Hickory and took two iPod’s valued at $300 and other items valued at $300. That same morning at 7:26, an officer was dispatched to Chilton Oil on West Hunt in reference to damage to private property. That investigation revealed that someone broke a window on the building valued at $350 and emptied a fire extinguisher valued at $300. On Tuesday, October 23rd at 8:20 in the morning, an officer was contacted at the station in reference to a theft from a truck. The investigation revealed that someone forcibly entered a commercial truck parked at the truck parking lot on Babb Lane and took fuel and items valued at $1907.50. Later that morning at 10:14, an officer was dispatched to Walmart in reference a shoplifter. That investigation led to the arrest of a 35-year old Salem male for stealing merchandise valued at $49.87. He was issued a summons to appear in court and released. That evening at 7:38, an officer was dispatched to Phil-Mart in reference to a theft of fuel. The investigation revealed that a female driving a green Subaru Outback pumped $10 in fuel and left without paying. Time changes this weekend. It is that time of year once again to fall back, turn your clocks back an hour and gain an extra hour of sleep. Be sure and set your clocks back one hour either Saturday night before you go to bed or Sunday morning when you get up.
Captain Lee Ann Kenley, commanding officer, Troop I, announced that Troop I officers will again team up with law enforcement agencies in other states in the “Get Your ‘Clicks’ On Route 66” seat belt crackdown today. The quarterly mobilization began in August of 2010, with a handful of law enforcement agencies in Central Oklahoma, but now has expanded to include highway patrol, state police, and local law enforcement agencies in eight states along the famed Route 66 corridor. The wearing of seat belts by drivers and passengers in vehicles is one of the best ways to prevent death and personal injury when involved in a traffic crash. In recent years, the state of Missouri has recognized the benefit seat belt usage has on reducing traffic crash deaths and injuries through the passage of infant restraint and adult seat belt laws. The effectiveness of using seat belts becomes apparent when considering the following statistics. A driver in a 2011 Missouri traffic crash had a 1 in 30 chance of being killed if they were not wearing a seat belt. In those cases where a driver wore a seat belt, their chance of being killed was 1 in 1,424.

Philip Rivers threw as many touchdown passes as he did incompletions on Thursday night, as the San Diego Chargers pounded the Kansas City Chiefs, 31-13, in an AFC West clash at Qualcomm Stadium. Rivers completed his first 13 passes and finished 18-of-20 for 220 yards, two touchdowns and an interception for the Chargers. Ryan Mathews added 67 yards on 13 carries, while Michael Floyd and Antonio Gates each hauled in a touchdown pass to help San Diego move within one-half game of the Denver Broncos atop the AFC West. Matt Cassel passed for 181 yards and an interception on 19-of-29 passing for Kansas City (1-7), which has now dropped its last five games. Dwayne Bowe caught eight passes for 79 yards, but the Chiefs, who lead the league with 29 turnovers, gave the ball away four times in Thursday's setback. The Chiefs will play the Steelers next Sunday.
The Missouri Tiger football team will play at eighth-ranked Florida Saturday morning at 11:00. Missouri is 4-4 on the year and 1-4 in the SEC. You can hear the game on KSMO.

Funeral services for Dorothy Lee Conley of Edgar Springs, age 79, will be held Monday at 1:00 at the Wilson Mortuary in Salem. Visitation will be from 11:00 until service time. Interment will be in the Victor Cemetery in Anutt. Memorials may be made to the Anutt Community Church.
Funeral services for Bessie Reynolds of St. James, age 85, will be held Monday at 1:00 at the James and Gahr Mortuary in St. James. Visitation will be from 11:00 until service time at the James and Gahr Chapel. Interment will be in the Asher Cemetery in rural St. James.
