An accident occurred at 4:36 Tuesday afternoon in Phelps County on Highway 72 about 13 miles south of Rolla. According to the highway patrol report, a 2001 Dodge Ram driven by 73-year old Carol Wells of Salem was attempting to pass a 1976 John Deere driven by 51-year old Ricky Emory of Salem, who was traveling on the shoulder at a slow rate of speed with his flashers on. While attempting to pass, the Dodge struck the rear of the John Deere, began to spin, crossed the center line, and struck an oncoming 1993 Ford driven by 32-year old Christine White of Salem. The contact caused the Ford to travel off the roadway and down an embankment. Carol Wells suffered minor injuries and an occupant in the Dodge Ram, 70-year old Margaret Wells of Salem, suffered moderate injuries. Both were taken by Phelps County ambulance to the Phelps County Regional Medical Center. Everyone except for Ricky Emory were wearing seat restraints at the time of the accident. The Dodge Ram was totaled in the accident, and the John Deere sustained extensive damage. Both vehicles were removed from the scene by Whitaker’s Towing. The Ford sustained moderate damage and was towed by the owner.

An accident occurred on Saturday, October 29th at 9:30 in the morning at the intersection of Fifth and North Washington Streets in Salem. According to the Salem Police report, Candice Whitlock of Salem was riding a bicycle and failed to stop at the stop sign and attempted to avoid contact with a 2003 Dodge Ram driven by Martin Watts of Salem, who was making a left turn onto North Washington. Contact was made and Whitlock was ejected from the bicycle. Whitlock suffered moderate injuries and was taken to the Salem Memorial District Hospital by ambulance. She stated that the brakes failed on the bicycle. Both the Dodge and the bicycle sustained minor damage.

The Dent County Fire Protection Board of Directors will hold their regular meeting tonight at 6:00 at the fire station. After roll call and approval of the consent agenda, the board will pay bills and sign file copies. The board will then review the 2011 budget and review the calendar. They will give their reimbursement report and the Chief will give his reports. They will then schedule their next meeting for December 6th and go into executive session. The meeting of the Dent County Fire Protection Board of Directors is open to the public. 

The Dent County Fire Protection District released their reports for fire calls for the week of October 23rd through October 29th. On Sunday, October 23rd at 2:17 in the afternoon, six firefighters responded to a call at 190 County Road 4200 in Salem to a family dwelling. The cause of the fire was determined to be a Chimney or flue fire. They extinguished the fire and were back in service by 3:12 in the afternoon. On Monday, October 24th at 7:10 in the evening, 13 firefighters responded to a family dwelling on fire on County Road 2210 in Lenox. The call was cancelled in route as it was in the Lenox Fire Protection District. On Friday, October 28th at 8:37 in the evening, 10 firefighters responded to a fire at a family dwelling on the 800 block of East Jackson Street in Salem. They extinguished the fire and  prepared the scene for salvage and overhaul. The American Red Cross Capital Area Chapter volunteers are assisting the family that have been displaced by the fire. Red Cross volunteers from Dent County responded Saturday and are meeting the family’s immediate emergency needs. The family members who lived in the home are staying with relatives. On Saturday, October 29th at 4:07 in the evening, nine firefighters responded to an electrical fire at a business located at 1101 highway 32 West in Salem. They performed an investigation and were back in service by 4:36.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol has released their arrest reports for Dent County. On Tuesday, October 25th at 9:26 in the evening, 28-year old Roni Smith of Salem was arrested and charged with felony possession of a controlled substance other than 35 grams or less of marijuana, driving while intoxicated, failure to drive on the right half of the roadway, and no seat belt.  On Friday, October 28th at 2:34 in the afternoon, 32-year old Bryan Stogsdill of Licking was arrested on a Rolla municipal warrant for failure to appear for driving while suspended and he was also charged with no wearing a seat belt. Stogsdill was taken to the Dent County Jail. On Saturday, October 29th at 1:35 early in the morning, 29-year old Joseph Lester of Salem was arrested and charged with driving while intoxicated, no driver’s license, and failure to yield. He was taken to Dent County Jail and put on a 12-hour hold.

The Salem Area Chamber of Commerce and the City of Salem invites individuals, businesses, and organizations to particiapate in the 2011 Chirstmas parade on Saturday, December 3rd. This year’s theme is ‘An Animated Christmas’ and it will start at 5:30. The parade route runs from the old fairgrounds to the Dent County Courthouse. No ATV’s will be allowed in the parade. You can get an entry form and rule sheet at the Chamber Ofiice at 200 South Main Street. Entry forms need to submitted by November 23rd. The Cardinals declined their remaining contract options, making Rafael Furcal and Octavio Dotel free agents. Additionally, St. Louis formally exercised its option on catcher Yadier Molina. Molina will make $7 million for 2012.

Yadier Molina won his fourth Rawlings Gold Glove Award, and fourth straight, on Tuesday night. Molina is the 10th player in the history of the award to be named a Gold Glover at catcher four times. He becomes the first catcher to win the award three times as a Cardinal, breaking a tie with Mike Matheny and Tom Pagnozzi. Although he didn’t win a Gold Glove this year, Cardinal’s first baseman Albert Pujols won a Fielding Bible award as the best defensive first baseman in the Majors.

Alex Gordon, a third baseman for the Royals until last year, is now among baseball's elite outfielders. Gordon won the Rawlings Gold Glove as the American League's best defensive left fielder on Tuesday night.

The Kansas City Royals have picked up their 2012 club option on closer Joakim Soria. Soria, 27, has saved 160 games in 180 chances for Kansas City since his rookie year in 2007.

The Missouri Tiger basketball team will host Truman State tonight in preseason action. You can hear that game on KSMO starting at 6:30.

A Celebration of Life will be held for Roy Wayne Howard Sr. of Salem, age 64, today from 1:00 to 3:00 at the Wilson Mortuary Salem Chapel.

Funeral services for Iona Mae Stephens of Salem, age 91, will be held Friday at 11:00 at the James and Gahr Mortuary in Salem. Visitation will be Thursday from 5:00 to 7:00 at the chapel. Interment will be in the New Hope Cemetery in Salem. Memorials may be made to the New Hope Cemetery.
