At the state grassland competition in Ashland on Thursday, October 28th, the Salem FFA team took fifth place. Team members include Cody Lough, Lane Howard, Ashley Greenshields and Nick Wesslak. The fifth place finish qualifies the team to compete in the National Land & Range Judging Contest that will be held in Oklahoma City from May 3^rd through the 5th, 2011 and also at the Mid-America Grassland Evaluation Contest in Springfield, MO on June 7^th and 8th, 2011. The Dent County 4-H team of Alyvia Toman, Ryan Blaylock, Eddie Fleetwood & Wes Tatom placed 7th in the 4-H division and missed qualifying for the National and Mid-America Competition by 50 points out of a possible 900 points. Congratulations to both teams on a great job at the competitions.

The Dent County Commissioners regular meeting was held Monday morning at the Dent County Courthouse. In the road report, District One Commissioner Dennis Purcell reported that grading would be done on Dent County Roads 5690, 6610 and 6620; and brush was going to be cut on Dent County Roads 4210 and 5600. He said that one truck would be hauling brown gravel while another would be going to get oil for chip and seal patching. District Two Commissioner Gary Larson said that brush cutting was going to be done on Dent County Road 3020 and that a crew would be working on the approach on Dent County Road 2540. He said that the signs at the junction of Dent County Roads 4330 and 4370 has to be replaced, and that District Two truck would also be hauling brown gravel. Larson also wanted to report that training will be held by the Red Cross at the Oak Grove Baptist Church on November 13^th from 8:30 AM until 4:30 PM for anyone interested in helping at the shelter in the event of an emergency. Dent County Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles said that he attended the Region I Homeland Security Oversight Committee meeting Thursday and that the 2010 grant applications for emergency response and preparedness will be accepted until December 1^st. He also said that since 2006, the committee has dispersed 1.6 million dollars to various entities. Skiles reported that Dennis Purcell would now be the representative for the Dent County Commission on the HSOC Committee and he would be the alternate. Skiles went on to say that Paul Fennewald of the Missouri Office of Homeland Security reported that the state is now moving forward with a statewide interoperable communications system. A representative will be in Dent County to explain what is going on at a later date. Dent County Clerk Angie Curley reminds everyone that voting hours will be from 6:00 in the morning until 7:00 in the evening at your polling location. The next meeting of the Dent County Commissioners will be Thursday morning at 9:00 at the Dent County Courthouse and the meeting is open to the public.

The City of Salem Board of Aldermen met Monday night for their regular meeting. After the consent agenda, Mayor Gary Brown said that last Thursday he attended the Troop I HSOC meeting in St. James with officers Kimrey and Steelman from the Salem Police Department. Brown said that he was named as an alternate representing the city mayors for the committee. He did say that the Salem Police Department was going to be requesting a grant from the committee for a new base radio that meets the new radio requirements that go into effect in 2012. Mayor Brown also said that the city would begin advertising for a new lineman for the electric department. He stated that the city surplus sale brought in about $3,400 with the sale of old wire, old poles, scrap equipment, a generator and more. Alderman Jerry Randell asked if the street sweeper needed to be used as much as it is because of the expense associated with it. Mayor Brown said that the street sweeper was used more often at the request of previous aldermen and that usage can be cut back to where the city would be totally swept two or three times a year. Brown did say that he received a bid of $4,580 for a sound system in the council chambers, but he needed to confer with Jack Emory about it before presenting it to the board. Mayor Brown said that he received a term sheet from Pro Energy and recommended reviewing it in closed session to receive legal council. Resolution #4-2010 that would authorize the mayor to execute an agreement between the city and Accubak Data Systems for the use of the water tower to provide a wireless broadband access points was tabled until after the closed session. After the bills were approved, the board did go into closed session.

The 2010 Salem Area Chamber of Commerce Awards Banquet, Silent Auction and regular Auction to be held on Thursday, November 4^th at the Salem City Hall Auditorium beginning at 6:00 pm. Tickets are available at the Salem Chamber of Commerce office at 200 South Main Street for $20 per person. At the banquet, the winners of the Business of the Year, Non-Profit Organization of the Year, Small Business of the Year, the Customer Service Award and Citizen of the Decade will be announced. The Dent County Health Center has flu shots, available daily Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. The shots will cost $25. They will accept cash or check, or they will bill Medicaid and Medicare Part B, but you will need to bring your cards with you.
