The Dent County Commission met for it’s regular meeting Thursday morning at the Dent County Courthouse. In the road report, District 1 Commissioner Dennis Purcell said no grading would be done due to the wet conditions. He did state that brush would be cut on Dent County Roads 5160 and 5170, while materials would be added to county roads 5410 and 5420. Purcell said that brakes were being put on Dent County Truck #73 and an oil change was being done to truck #66. He went on to say that a couple of men were putting up road number signs that were missing. Purcell reported that he attended the Dent County Tourism Commission meeting on Monday and for the 2013 year, they have approved 14 projects for funding to promote Dent County in the amount of $60,455.72. District 2 Commissioner Gary Larson said that conditions were too wet to grade, but materials would be added to Dent County Roads 2010, 3180, 3193 and 3195. He also indicated that some maintenance would be done around the shop. Larson did report that he and Sam checked and started the Red Cross Emergency Shelter Generator at Oak Grove Baptist Church. He said there was only about 64% of fuel left in the tank and asked the other commissioners if they thought the fuel should be transferred out of that tank and then refill the tank to it’s capacity level at around 80% or so. Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles thought that was a good idea. Larson thought the Road and Bridge Department already had a pump for that, but if not, Commissioners Larson and Purcell had already talked about getting one. Skiles did not have anything to report while Dent County Clerk Angie Curley said that she applied for grants in the amount of $3,772. One of the grants was an Election Efficiency Grant and it was for $2,038 and that can be used to purchase new equipment or provide for polling place improvements. The other $1,734 grant was to train poll workers. Curley also stated that budgets from the individual office holders are beginning to come in for the 2014 year. At the last meeting, Wayne Becker with the Sheriff’s Department brought in the 2014 State Cyber Crime Grant for the Commission to sign. The next meeting of the Dent County Commissioners will be held Monday morning at 9:00 at the courthouse and it is open to the public.

An accident occurred at 10:30 Thursday morning in Phelps County on I-44 at Jerome. According to the highway patrol report, 32-year old Brandon Stout of St. Robert was driving a 2005 Dodge pickup west when he lost control, slid off the right side of the roadway, and struck a tree. Stout suffered serious injuries and was taken to the Phelps County Regional Medical Center by ambulance. He was not wearing a seat restraint at the time of the accident. The Dodge was totaled and removed from the scene by C&C Towing of Rolla.

An accident occurred at 11:38 Thursday morning in Phelps County on I-44 at the 186.4-mile marker in Rolla. According to the highway patrol report, 49-year old Qui Vu of Yorba Linda, California was driving a 2006 Volvo tractor-trailer unit west when it began sliding on the wet pavement. The unit then traveled off the right side of the roadway, struck a guardrail, it then jackknifed, returned and crossed over the roadway, slid off the left side of the road, struck the concrete median barrier, and then caught fire. Vu and an occupant, 55-year old Hung Theu of Arcadia, California, suffered minor injuries and were taken to the Phelps County Regional Medical Center by ambulance. Vu was the only one wearing a seat restraint at the time of the accident. The Volvo was totaled and removed by C&C Towing of Rolla.

An accident occurred at 9:30 Thursday night in Dent County on Highway 32 about two miles east of Salem. According to the highway patrol report, 48-year old Mark Sigman was driving a 1996 Ford Bronco east when the vehicle traveled off the right side of the roadway, overcorrected, traveled off the left side of the road, and struck a tree. Sigman suffered minor injuries and was taken to the Salem Memorial District Hospital by private vehicle. He was not wearing a seat restraint at the time of the accident. The Ford sustained moderate damage and was removed by Whitaker’s Towing.

The Missouri Public Service Commission’s Cold Weather Rule, designed to help customers with heat-related utility bills, begins today. The rule will remain in effect through March 31, 2014. The Cold Weather Rule has been a part of the Commission’s rules and regulations since 1977. The Cold Weather Rule applies to natural gas and electric utilities under PSC jurisdiction that provide heat-related service. Municipally operated systems, cooperatives and those that provide propane delivered by truck are not under PSC jurisdiction. The rule does not apply to them. The Cold Weather Rule contains a number of protections designed to help consumers keep the heat on during the winter. Consumers who have questions regarding the rule or who need additional information on the Cold Weather Rule are encouraged to contact our Consumer Services Unit at 800-392-4211.
