The Dent County Commissioners met for their regular meeting at the Dent County Courthouse Monday morning. In the road report, District 1 Commissioner Dennis Purcell said that grading would be done on Dent County Roads 2490, 5380, 6370, and 6480. He said that brush was going to be cut on Dent County Roads 2470 and 5015, and that materials were going to be added and grading was going to be done on Dent County Road 6350. District 2 Commissioner Gary Larson said that grading would be done on Dent County Roads 2120, 5340 and 4430, while materials will be added and grading would be done on Dent County Road 3030. Larson stated that a truck would be going to Springfield to get oil for the Dura-Patcher to repair chip and seal roads. Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles said that the MAGIC Insurance Consortium that Dent County is a part of would be meeting this Wednesday in Springfield to discuss renewal rates. He also wanted to remind everyone that tickets for the MRPC Annual Dinner that will be held November 10^th in Vienna are available at the MRPC office in St. James and also by calling 573-265-2993. Dent County Clerk Angie Curley reported that the state of Missouri would have a presidential primary and a caucus next year. She also mentioned that the Missouri Secretary of State has approved a state initiative to eliminate the state income tax and replace it with a state sales tax. The next meeting of the Dent County Commissioners will be Thursday morning at 9:00 at the courthouse and the meeting is open to the public.

An accident occurred at 8:35 Saturday morning in Crawford County on Highway 19 about five miles south of Cherryville. According to the highway patrol report, a 1990 Ford Boardman Fire Truck driven by 21-year old Dalton Ertl of Steelville ran off the right side of the roadway, overcorrected, ran off the left side of the roadway, overturned, and came to rest on the passenger side. Ertl suffered moderate injuries and was transported by ambulance to the Missouri Baptist Hospital in Sullivan. An occupant, 26-year old Daniel Scott of Steelville, was partially ejected and suffered serious injuries. He was air lifted by Air Evac to the St. Johns Hospital in Creve Coeur. They were not wearing a seat restraint at the time of the accident. The Ford was totaled in the accident and was removed from the scene by Miles and Sons Towing.

The Salem Police Department has released their reports for Monday, October 24^th. At 12:05 early in the morning, an officer was dispatched to the 1100 block of East Center Street in reference to a disturbance. The investigation led to the arrest of a 31-year old female of Salem for possession of marijuana and a fugitive warrant from Pulaski County. She posted bond on the warrant and was released on a summons to appear in court. Later that morning at 9:35, an officer was dispatched to Casey’s General Store on Highway 32 East in reference to a theft of fuel. The investigation revealed that a white male with dark hair driving a white Ford Taurus pumped $38.01 in fuel and left without paying. At 1:10 that afternoon, an officer as dispatched to Casey’s General Store on Highway 32 East in reference to a theft of fuel. The investigation revealed that a white female with red hair driving a green Ford Escort pumped $30.02 in fuel and left without paying. At 8:55 that night, a vehicle was stopped for a traffic violation. The investigation of the stop led to the arrest of a 33-year old male of Salem for driving while drugged and possession of marijuana. He was issued a summons to appear in court and released. The Salem Area Chamber of Commerce has announced the nominees for this year’s award banquet. For the Small Business of the Year for up to 25 Employees, there are two nominations: Century 21 South Central Realty, owned by Beth Frizzell, and Salem Coin Op Laundry, Inc. For the Business of the Year for 26-50 Employees, there are two nominations: The Crossroads Development of Salem, MO/Holiday Inn Express/Crossroads Center and the Montauk Lodge. There is only one nomination for the Non-Profit Organization of the Year and that is Enrichment Services of Dent County. There were two nominations for the Customer Service Award. Those nominees included Frank Langford from Park Street Tire, and Jo Massie, Lanette Epstein, Katie Steelman and Tressa Schafer from Camron Erway’s State Farm Insurance Office. On the heels of their 11th World Series title, the St. Louis Cardinals announced on Monday that manager Tony La Russa has retired after 33 seasons as a big league manager and will not return for a 17th season with the team. The 67-year old skipper goes out as the third winningest manager in major league history with 2,728 victories for the White Sox (1979-1986), Athletics (1986-1995), and Cardinals (1996-present). Only Connie Mack has managed more games than the 5,097 La Russa has skippered.

On the same day he was to celebrate a World Series title with his St. Louis teammates, Albert Pujols officially became a free agent. Pujols was among 148 major league players who entered free agency Sunday, when the first baseman and the rest of his teammates were gearing up for their parade. Fellow Cardinals Edwin Jackson, Gerald Laird, Nick Punto and Arthur Rhodes were also on the list.

Ryan Succop booted a 30-yard field goal in overtime to give the Kansas City Chiefs a gift-wrapped 23-20 victory over the San Diego Chargers. Cassel completed 19-of-32 attempts for 261 yards while tossing two interceptions and losing a fumble. But the signal-caller came up big when it counted, most notably hitting Steve Breaston for a 17-yard gain on 3rd-and-14 in the extra session. Jackie Battle carried the ball 19 times for 70 yards, including a one-yard plunge three minutes into the fourth quarter to extend the hosts' lead to 20-12. The Chiefs are now tied for the division lead and play the Miami Dolphins next Sunday.

The 25^th ranked Mizzou basketball team defeated Missouri Southern State in the One State, One Spirit Classic on Sunday in Joplin 114-68. The game was another outreach by the Mizzou Department of Athletics and Missouri Southern State Department of Athletics towards the Joplin community and the two schools raised more than $100,000 for the community with the game.

Graveside services for Francis ‘Scotty’ Eugene Scott of Steelville, age 78, will be held today at 1:00 at the Jefferson Barracks Cemetery in St. Louis. All arrangements are under the direction of the Britton-Bennett Funeral Home in Steelville.

A Celebration of Life will be held for Roy Wayne Howard Sr. of Salem, age 64, on Wednesday from 1:00 to 3:00 at the Wilson Mortuary Salem Chapel.

Funeral services for Iona Mae Stephens of Salem, age 91, will be held Friday at 11:00 at the James and Gahr Mortuary in Salem. Visitation will be Thursday from 5:0 to 7:00. Interment will be in the New Hope Cemetery in Salem. Memorials may be made to the New Hope Cemetery.
