On the heels of their 11th World Series title, the St. Louis Cardinals announced on Monday that manager Tony La Russa has retired after 33 seasons as a big league manager and will not return for a 17th season with the team. The 67-year old skipper goes out as the third winningest manager in major league history with 2,728 victories for the White Sox (1979-1986), Athletics (1986-1995), and Cardinals (1996-present). Only Connie Mack has managed more games than the 5,097 La Russa has skippered.

On the same day he was to celebrate a World Series title with his St. Louis teammates, Albert Pujols officially became a free agent. Jackie Battle carried the ball 19 times for 70 yards, including a one-yard plunge three minutes into the fourth quarter to extend the hosts' lead to 20-12.
