The Salem R-80 Board of Education held their monthly meeting Thursday evening at the administrative offices boardroom. Board of Education pictures were postponed until possibly next months meeting. Superintendent Cindy Rumpf reported that the September membership count shows the Salem R-80 district has 1,111 students and the rural schools provide 275 students for a total of 1,386 students. Last year, the September membership count was 1,479 students. In the facilities update, Mr. McCulloch reported that work is finished on the roofs at William Lynch and the high school, and that Grace Community Church donated time to paint the outside of the press box at the football field. He also reported that the City of Salem is helping with fill dirt behind the Junior High and the school ground workers are leveling all that out. At the MASA meeting, information was shared in a handout at the October meeting concerning revenue, school funding, merit/performance pay for teachers and the early childhood special education services program along with varies other topics. In new business, the Board adopted the standard complaint resolution process of homeless children and youth. The Board was set to discuss a new phone system, which is still needed badly, but Rumpf informed them that based on finances at this time, it would not be feasibly possible. The Board approved the changes to Board Policy IKF regarding a dated issue and credit issue regarding graduation. The Board approved moving the November meeting up to Thursday, the 18th due to Thanksgiving. Rumpf updated the Board on the budget and reported that for the fiscal year-to-date from July 1^st through October 28^th, there was an excess of expenses over revenues of $302,017.86. She said that Salem currently has money that is waiting to be released by DESE and efforts are still continuing for the release of those funds. Rumpf stated that all areas of the financial status of the district are checked on a daily basis as funds are received and expended. Rumpf reported to the Board that there would be more discussion over the course of the next couple months on more cost cutting efforts to be utilized by the district. The Board accepted the resignation of Teresa Stark as a bus driver. They also accepted the retirement of FFA Instructor Bob Parsons, effective June 30, 2011 at which time he will have given 40 years and 5 months of service to the Salem R-80 District. Rumpf then reported to the Board that Salem R-80 had  been reviewing bus routes for games and activities as to taking a safer route by using Highway 72 instead of Highway 68. With transportation being federally funded; the federal authorities would have the final say. Dent County Sheriff Rick Stallings had asked that Salem R-80 renew an ad in an anti-drug magazine to be handed out to students and Rumpf said they would at a rate of $389. The Board then went into Closed Session.

The City of Salem Board of Aldermen will conduct their regular meeting tonight at 7;00 in the City Hall Council Chambers. After roll call and approval of the consent agenda, Mayor Gary Brown will give his report and give an update on City projects. City Clerk Mary Happel will then present Resolution NO. 4-2010 for approval. Resolution NO. 4-2010 is a three-year renewal of the previous contract that has the city has with Accubak Data Systems, Inc. for the use of the water tower for their wireless equipment that is located at Tower and Condray Street. The Board will then go into closed session. The meeting of the City of Salem Board of Aldermen is open to the public.

Project Graduation for the 2011 Graduation Class will hold a fund-raiser tonight from 5:00 – 8:00 p.m. at the Pizza Inn in the Crossroads Shopping Center. Everyone is invited to take a night off from cooking tonight and dine at Pizza Inn to help raise money for Project Graduation.
