The autumn time change happens this weekend as we fall back one hour as Daylight Savings Time ends. You can either set your clock back an hour Saturday night before you go to bed or Sunday morning when you get up.

The Dent County Commissioners met for their regular meeting Thursday morning at the courthouse. In the road report, District 1 Commissioner Dennis Purcell reported grading would be done on Dent County Roads 5015, 5080, 5085, and 5630 while materials would be added to and grading done on county road 5610. Purcell said materials would be added to Dent County Road 2450 and a man would be patching various locations on chip and seal roads. District 2 Commissioner Gary Larson stated grading would be done on Dent County Road 4270 while materials would be added to and grading done on county road 2050. He also said materials would be added to county road 2075 and a man would be screening brown rock at the shed. At 10:00, the commission went out to the new bridge on Dent County Road 3210 built by Robertson Contractors out of Poplar Bluff for a ribbon cutting ceremony. It is a 90-foot concrete structure with reinforced beams that require no middle support structure that could cause water backups during high water. The water under the bridge is now free flowing. This bridge was made possible by funding from the BRO fund from MoDOT and also funds from the Conservation Federation. The bid to build the bridge from Robertson came in at $340,678.72. The commissioners also wanted to thank the Kaczmarek and Blackwell families for their land donation to make the bridge possible. The bridge had been closed since February 17th of 2012. Larson said after the ribbon cutting that workers would be removing the “bridge out” signs. Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles wanted to remind everyone to vote and make your voice heard. We live in a country that allows us to elect the people we want to represent us, but unfortunately less than 50% will even vote instead of the 80 to 90% that should be voting that would truly be a majority of voters. Dent County Clerk Angie Curley said absentee voting will be held Saturday from 8:00 in the morning until noon at her office, and again until 5:00 Monday afternoon. The polls will open on Tuesday at 6:00 AM and remain open until 7:00 PM. If you want to know your voting location, please contact the clerk’s office at 729-4144. Dent County Collector Dennis Medlock has released the schedule for extended hours for his office in December. The collector’s office will be open from 9:00 in the morning until noon on Saturdays, December 6th and 20th. They will also be open from 8:00 AM until 5:30 PM Friday, December 26th; then Monday through Wednesday, December 29th through the 31st also from 8:00 AM until 5:30 PM. The next meeting of the Dent County Commissioners will be Monday morning at 9:00 at the courthouse and the meeting is open to the public.

Make your plans for this year’s Halloween fun, but keep in mind that one of the best choices you can make is to drive sober or designate a sober driver to get you home safely. In 2013 there were nine fatal crashes and 34 serious injury crashes during the Halloween holiday weekend. Before the Halloween festivities begin, plan a way to safely get home at the end of the night. Always designate a sober driver. Walking impaired can be just as dangerous as drunk driving. Designate a sober friend to walk you home. If you know someone who is about to drive or ride impaired, take their keys and help them make safe travel arrangements to where they are going. Remember trick or treating hours in the city are from 6:00 to 8:00 PM.
