The Salem Police Department released their reports involving property damage, and shoplifters. On October 13
th at 6:11 in the morning, an officer was detailed to the 800 block of North Henderson in reference to property damage. The report revealed that person(s) unknown broke the back glass out of a maroon 1999 Pontiac Grand Prix. The damage is valued at $300. At 9:11 that evening, an officer was detailed to the 700 block of East Center in reference to a disturbance. The report led to the arrest of a 20-year old Salem female for trespassing, damage to private property and disorderly conduct. She was incarcerated and will be issued summons to appear in court upon her release. On October 14
th at 5:27 in the morning, an officer was detailed to MaCarthur and Franklin in reference to property damage. The report revealed that person(s) unknown cut a tire on a black 2002 Mercury Cougar. The damage is valued at $150. On October 21
st at 8:00 in the evening, an officer was detailed to Wal-Mart in reference to a shoplifter. The report led to the arrest of a 19-year old Salem male and the detention of a 15-year old Salem male for stealing. The juvenile was released to his parent and will be referred to the juvenile officer. The 19-year old was issued a summons to appear in court and released. On October 25
th at 2:05 in the afternoon, an officer was detailed to Wal-Mart in reference to a shoplifter. The report led to the arrest of an 18-year old Salem female for stealing. She was issued a summons to appear in court and released. Later that evening at 8:34, an officer was detailed to Wal-Mart in reference to a shoplifter. The report led to the arrest of a 29-year old Salem male for stealing. He was issued a summons to appear in court and released. Anyone with any information regarding any of these incidents, which are still under investigation, is asked to contact the Salem Police Department by calling 729-4242.
The next Relay for Life committee meeting is Thursday, November 1st beginning at 6:30 pm at the Bank of Salem Courtesy Room. Anyone interested in Relay for Life, serving on the committee, or having a team involved is invited to attend. Contact Carilee Ball for more information at 247-2300.
At the 80th National FFA Convention held on Saturday, October 27th in Indianapolis, Indiana, Justin Headrick and Paul Wells, both of Salem received the American Degree, which is the highest degree awarded by the National FFA Organization. To be eligible, members must have earned and productively invested $7,500 through a supervised agricultural experience (SAE) program. The National FFA Organization, formerly known as the Future Farmers of America, is a national youth organization of 495,046 student members, all preparing for leadership and careers in the science, business and technology of agriculture. Justin and Paul had to demonstrate their leadership abilities and outstanding achievements in agricultural business, production, processing and service programs. Both received a gold American Degree key and certificate in a blue leatherette frame to commemorate the achievement, two of only 3,168 to be recognized in 2007. Congratulations to Justin Headrick and Paul Wells.
The Meramec Regional Planning Commission (MRPC) will be celebrating 38 years of service with their annual dinner. Dr. Brad E. Frazier, the general manager of the Wal-Mart Logistics Distribution Center #6069 in St. James, will be the featured speaker. The MRPC annual dinner will be held on Thursday, November 8th in Sullivan. The celebration is planned at the St. Anthony Catholic School and will get under way at 4:30 with a short board meeting. The reception starts at 5:00, and dinner will follow at 6:00 p.m. Prepared by Catering Etc. of Sullivan, the buffet-style meal. The awards program will begin at 7:00. In addition to Dr. Frazier’s presentation, MRPC will also honor volunteers from around the Meramec Region for their community service efforts. Some of the volunteers to be recognized for community contributions and volunteer efforts include John R. Taylor of Steelville and Erin Hamby of Salem. The public is invited to attend the MRPC’s annual dinner, and reservations are now being accepted. Contact Ruth Whitaker at (573)-265-2993 to make reservations by November 1st. The cost is $22.50 per person. The Eugene E. Northern award, the highest honor given by the MRPC for volunteerism and community service, will also be named at the dinner. The MRPC is a voluntary council of local governments serving Crawford, Dent, Gasconade, Maries, Osage, Phelps, Pulaski and Washington counties and their respective cities.
Happy Halloween and remember that the trick or treating hours in the city of Salem will be from 6:00 to 8:00 tonight. Only South Water Street will be closed this year and that is for a church event at Grace Community Church. Costumes are best when they can be seen and it is recommended to wear makeup instead of a mask so as not to interfere with children’s line of sight. Children should also only go to homes that are well lighted welcoming them, and they should never go into a home or get into the vehicle of a stranger.

Fredrik Sjostrom's wraparound goal with 2:58 left in the third period was the difference as Phoenix nipped St. Louis, 2-1, at Scottrade Center. Mike Zigomanis also tallied for the Coyotes, who have won two of three. Brad Boyes scored for the Blues, who have dropped three of five. Manny Legace allowed both goals on 27 shots in defeat. Blues winger Paul Kariya registered an assist, his team-high 12th helper, and has scored in eight of the team's first 10 games. The Blues will be at Minnesota tomorrow night at 7:00 and you can hear the game on KSMO Radio.

Funeral services for Juttie Maynard of Boss, age 94, will be held this morning at 11:00 at the James and Gahr Chapel in Salem. Visitation will be from 9:00 until service time this morning. Interment will be Thursday at the Memorial Gardens Cemetery in St. Charles.
Funeral services for Bernice Graham of Salem, age 82, will be held this afternoon at 1:00 at the Dent County Memorial Chapel. Interment will be in the Mt. Zion Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the Mt. Zion Cemetery.
Funeral services for Luther Lewis Tucker of Bunker, age 80, will be held Thursday morning at 11:00 at the McSpadden Funeral Home in Bunker. Visitation will be today from 5:00 to 8:00. Interment will be in the Bay Cemetery in Bunker.
Funeral services for Wayne E. King of Potosi, formerly of Steelville, age 76, will be held Thursday at 2:00 at the Britton-Bennett Funeral Home in Steelville. Visitation will be Thursday from 10:00 until service time. Interment will be in the Steelville Cemetery. Memorials may be given to the Britton-Bennett Funeral Home.
