Be listening to KSMO Radio this morning and afternoon for a candidate forum featuring the candidates in contested races for local offices for the Republicans and Democrats. The Republican Candidates will start things off at 11:00 and those in attendance will feature candidates Glenn Hall for Associate Circuit Judge, Dennis Purcell for First District Commissioner, Tim Bell for Sheriff, Scott Radford for Assessor, Jim Kotschedoff for Public Administrator, and Chris Raulston for Coroner. The Democrat Candidates will be featured at 2:30 and will include Brandi L. Baird for Associate Circuit Judge, Bob Herndon for First District Commissioner, Rick Stallings for Sheriff, Tina (Pryor) Whitaker for Assessor, Kirk Hogan for Public Administrator, and Gina White for Coroner. Stan Stevens will host the interview sessions and each candidate will have ten minutes to tell the audience about themselves, and why they would make the best candidate for the office they are seeking. The interviews can also be heard online at ksmoradio.com and they will be archived online at the KSMO Radio website in case you can’t listen live.

The Dent County Commissioners met for their regular meeting Monday morning at the Dent County Courthouse. In the road report, District 1 Commissioner Dennis Purcell reported that grading would be done on Dent County Roads 2490, 5110, 5220, 6050, 6100 and 6220; and that brush was going to cut on Dent County Roads 5680 and 6090. He stated that a man was going to deliver dirt to the shooting range. District 2 Commissioner Gary Larson said that grading was going to be done on Dent County Roads 2030, 2130, 5240, 6113 and 6160; while brush is going to be cut on Dent County Roads 2270 and 2510. He stated that he also has a man hauling dirt to the new shooting range. Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles stated that this Thursday there would be a Region I Homeland Security Oversight Committee meeting to reorganize the HSOC. It is important that this year’s alternates be in attendance for the meeting at 1:00 at the MRPC office in St. James. New alternates will be selected at this re-organizational meeting. Dent County Clerk Angie Curley said that absentee voting continues through November 5th during regular business hours at her office as well as on Saturday, November 3rd from 8:00 to noon. To date, she said that 613 people have voted absentee. She said that the last day to request a mail-out ballot will be Wednesday, and that sample ballots and the “Fair Ballot Language” concerning the amendment and propositions are available at her office for anyone who would like to pick one up. She is also reminding anyone that if you have moved or had a name change since you last voted to please contact her office at 729-4144 as soon as possible. That way they can tell you where your proper polling place will be to vote. Curley said that the public test of the voting equipment would be held this morning at 9:00 at her office. The next meeting of the Dent County Commissioners will be held on Thursday, November 1st at the Dent County Courthouse and that meeting is open to the public.

An accident occurred at 2:40 Monday afternoon in Phelps County on Highway 8 about one mile east of St. James. According to the highway patrol report, a 2005 Mazda Tribute driven by 48-year old Linda Cunningham of Cuba traveled off the right side of the roadway, went back onto the road, ran off the left side of the roadway, struck a culvert, and came to rest. Cunningham suffered moderate injuries and was taken by ambulance to the Phelps County Regional Medical Center. She was later charged with a felony driving while intoxicated (drugs), failure to wear a seat belt, and careless and imprudent driving. The Mazda was totaled and removed from the scene by Miles Towing.

The Ozark Natural & Cultural Resource Center (ONCRC) and the Community Projects Committee of the Salem City of Peace Garden Club are planning the 2012 “Trees, Trains & Wreaths” Christmas celebration display. This year’s theme will be “White Christmas”. The exhibits will include lighted trees & displays provided by individuals, families, organizations, businesses or churches. Four display cases are available on a first-come basis. Miniature trains will be featured. New this year will be a wreath display, competition and sale with proceeds going to the Salvation Army Kettle Fund. The display period will be from November 23rd to December 23rd. As always, admission to the exhibit will be free with patrons having the opportunity to make donations to the Salvation Army at the display entrance. All displays will have a sign of recognition for their entry. If you or your groups are interested in participating, pick up an entry form, guidelines and a space request at ONCRC, 202 South 19 Highway. Roadwork continues this week in our area. In Crawford County, roadway resurfacing is complete and crews will continue to stripe the roadway and work on shoulders and curbing on Route 19 through the city of Cuba. Culvert pipe replacement in various locations will take place through Thursday on Highway 19 between Highway 8 and Route VV. Roadway maintenance will also take place through Thursday on Route DD between the I-44 North Outer Road and the end of state maintenance. In Dent County, roadway maintenance will take place through Thursday, November 8th on Route D between Route H and the end of state maintenance. In Phelps County, overnight roadway resurfacing in the eastbound lanes continues on I-44 between mile markers 179 and 185. Work will take place between 7:00 pm and 6:00 am during the week. The project is scheduled for completion in December. During most of these projects, one lane will be open and crews will flag traffic through the work area. St. Louis Cardinal catcher Yadier Molina and Kansas City Royal left fielder Alex Gordon have been awarded 2012 Fielding Bible Awards for their positions. This is Molina’s fifth time winning and Gordon’s first. Both players were unanimous choices for their positions.

The St. Louis Cardinals have announced that bullpen coach Dyar Miller will not be retained on manager Mike Matheny's coaching staff. All other coaches from Matheny's staff have been offered the opportunity to return in 2013. John Mozeliak also announced that even though the organization termed his departure this year as a "leave of absence,” former pitching coach Dave Duncan will not be returning to the organization. Duncan stepped aside from his position in January in order to attend to his wife and the door was left open for his potential return.

The Kansas City Royals have claimed pitcher Chris Volstad off waivers from the Chicago Cubs. Volstad, 26, made 21 starts for the Cubs in 2012, his lone campaign in the Windy City after playing parts of the previous four seasons with the Marlins. He compiled a 3-12 record with a 6.31 earned run average for Chicago.

The National Hockey League has announced the cancellation of its 2012-13 regular-season schedule for the entire month of November. The move comes one week after games through November 1st were excised, and eight days after the league rejected three separate proposals presented by the NHLPA. The lockout, which began on September 16th, has now caused the cancellation of 326 regular-season games.

Funeral services for Brenda Medlock (Davis) of Steelville, age 65, will be held Wednesday at 2:00 at the Hutson Funeral Home in Cuba. Visitation will be today from 5:00 to 8:00. Interment will be in the New Hope Cemetery in Salem.

Funeral services for Lavada Martin of Steelville, age 77, will be held Wednesday at 3:00 at the Britton-Bennett Funeral Home in Steelville. Visitation will be today from 4:00 to 8:00 at the funeral home. Interment will be in the Schweider Cemetery in Steelville.
