After four hours of deliberation Thursday evening, a jury comprised of citizens from Crawford County found Donald R. “Doc” Nash guilty of capital murder of Judy Spencer, a case that had remained open since 1982. Nash was given a life sentence without the possibility of parole. The case started Monday and was being tried at the Phelps County Courthouse in Rolla. Nash, who was the former boyfriend of Spencer, was arrested back in March of 2008 when DNA evidence collected from the fingernails of Spencer was determined to be that of Nash.

The Dent County Commissioners met for their regular meeting Thursday morning at the Dent County Courthouse. In the road report, First District Commissioner Dennis Purcell said that brush was going to be cut on Dent County Road 6280. He also said that workers would be checking and cleaning out culverts and doing maintenance on a truck. Purcell stated that rock would continue to be hauled from the creek as long as possible. Second District Commissioner Gary Larson reported that workers were going to repair a washout on Dent County Road 5300 and also haul rock to that road. Larson said that workers were repairing a water crossing on Dent County Road 2025 and would finish that job. He stated that a driveway pipe may be put in on Dent County Road 2150, weather permitting.  He went on to say that workers would be hauling rock from the creek as long as possible, then would work at the gravel plant to separate the rocks and sand. Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles reported that he attended an MREPC meeting Wednesday and they discussed that it is becoming more difficult for volunteer fire departments to get training as the University of Missouri Fire and Rescue Training is monopolizing the field and charging excessive rates. Skiles said that the committee drafted a letter to their legislators to see what can be done about this. He also said that the Department of Natural Resources wanted any schools that find any old mercury to contact them before it ends up being spilled which would contaminate the area. He also said that a meeting has been set up for next Tuesday to discuss the grant funding for the new back-up generator for the Red Cross Emergency Shelter at the Oak Grove Baptist Church. He feels that the best route would be to submit another application in the upcoming application period for the additional funds needed, but the group will examine and discuss all the options. The next meeting of the Dent County Commissioners will be Monday morning at 9:00 and the meeting is open to the public.

Daylight savings time will come to an end on Saturday, October 31^st and you’ll want to be sure and set your clocks back an hour. You can either set your clock back an hour Saturday night before you go to bed or on Sunday morning, November 1^st when you get up. Gain an extra hour by setting your clocks back an hour.

The Annual Salem Area Chamber of Commerce Awards Banquet will be held on Thursday, November 12^th at the Commons. The annual fundraising event will feature a silent auction, a live auction and dinner catered by Salem Catering. The Chamber will honor the 2009 award winners during the banquet. Awards for 2009 include business of the year for a business having more than 15 employees; small business of the year for a business having 15 or less employees, a customer service award will recognize the efforts of an individual or business and a visionary award will be given to a business, individual and a youth. An accident happened in Dent County on Route H about two miles west of Salem Thursday evening at 6:55. According to the highway patrol, a 2001 Nissan Maxima driven westbound by 22-year old Joshua D. Robinson of Edgar Springs, crossed the centerline and sideswiped a 1995 Ford Aspire driven eastbound by 47-year old Terri L. Prugh of Salem. Robinson suffered minor injuries in the accident and sought his own treatment. The Aspire sustained extensive damage and was driven from the scene, and the Nissan Maxima sustained moderate damage and was also driven from the scene. Robinson was not wearing a seat restraint at the time of the accident while Prugh was.

The Salem Football Tigers will face the St. James Tigers in the final regular season game of the year. Game time is 7:00 and it will be Senior Night. Salem enters with a 2-0 District record and has already clinched the district championship. St. James comes in to the game with an 0-2 District record. Tonight the Salem Football Tigers will also be holding a “Cancer Awareness Night” by donating 25% of the gate to the Dent County Relay for Life as well as holding raffles for some Missouri Football Tigers tickets, Blues Hockey tickets and the game ball. All Salem fans are encouraged to attend and support this team effort.

Daniel Winnik scored the game-winning goal early in the second period, and Ilya Bryzgalov stopped all 32 shots faced, as the Phoenix Coyotes got by the St. Louis Blues, 2-0, at Scottrade Center. Ty Conklin stopped 27-of-29 shots for St. Louis, which has split its last six games. The Blues will host the Florida Panthers Saturday at 7:00 and you can hear the game on KSMO Radio.

St. Louis Cardinal’s first baseman Albert Pujols was named the top player in the National League by the Major League Baseball Players Association. Pujols paced the majors with 47 home runs, two shy of his career high, and drove in 135 runs. His .327 batting average ranked third in the National League.

The Missouri Football Tigers will be in Colorado tomorrow starting at 11:30 on KSMO Radio. Missouri is 4-3 on the year.

The Kansas City Chiefs have suspended running back Larry Johnson until Monday, November 9.
