There will be a Town Hall meeting tonight regarding the Salem R-80 bond issue that will be on the November ballot beginning at 5:30 in the Senior High School Library. This Town Hall meeting is open the public. The school administrators wanted to make it clear that the Proposition "A" issue that will be on the November ballot is not an educational issue, but in fact, a gaming issue.

The Salem Area Chamber of Commerce is still looking for nominations for people in the community who made a difference in the year 2008. To nominate your choice for “Teen of The Year”, “Outstanding Citizen of The Year”, and “The Lifetime Achievement Award,” go to the Salem area website, www.salemmo.com to fill out a nomination form electronically there, or you may pick up a nomination form at the Salem Area Chamber office at 200 South Main Street. The deadline to have nomination forms turned in to the Chamber office is tomorrow. For more information, call the Chamber office at 729-6900. Those nominated will be honored at the 2008 Awards Banquet on Thursday November 13^th at The Commons.

An accident happened at 3:08 yesterday afternoon on Interstate 44 about four miles east of Cuba. According to the highway patrol report, a 1998 GMC Sonoma driven eastbound by 28-year old Tommy Barton of Licking, attempted to pass an eastbound 1999 International Tractor driven by 62-year old Ruben Davison of San Diego, California, and the Sonoma struck the tractor, traveled off the left side of the roadway and struck the median cable. The Sonoma then overturned and ejected Barton from the vehicle. Barton suffered serious injuries and was taken to the Missouri Baptist Hospital in Sullivan by the North Crawford County Ambulance. Barton was charged with a DWI and for driving while having his licensed revoked. The Sonoma was totaled and removed from the scene by Miles Towing. The 1999 International Tractor had minor damage and was driven from the scene.

Halloween should be a fun holiday for children. Make sure your trick-or-treaters keep safety in mind! They should approach only houses they are familiar with and that have turned on outside lights. Emphasize to your children that they should never enter a stranger’s house or car for any reason. Parents are encouraged to accompany small children on their Halloween adventure. Make sure older children stay with a group when collecting treats. Halloween isn’t just for kids! Add some fun to your evening by accompanying your small children as they trick-or-treat. Perhaps you’re brave enough to dress up. It will be fun for you and safer for them. Remember to make costumes short enough to prevent tripping and choose materials that are flame-retardant. Light-colored costumes are suggested, because they are easier for motorists to see. If your child has a dark costume, add reflective tape. Does your Halloween party include alcohol? The Highway Patrol reminds drivers that alcohol, even in small amounts, slows reaction time and dulls the senses. There will be a lot of children out this Halloween. Excited trick-or-treaters may not look for cars on the street as they dash from one house to the next. Drinking and driving on this night could easily turn deadly.  Remember to choose a designated driver. Be aware of changes in the normal traffic pattern and please be a courteous driver. Use your turn signal and don’t speed!  Help keep Halloween a safe, fun holiday. Remember, the city of Salem has established Trick of Treating hours from 6:00 to 8:00 and the hospital will have an event on their patio those hours as well. The only street that will be closed Halloween is Water Street between Franklin and Hunt for a church event at Grace Assembly.

It is that time of year to turn your clocks back. Central Standard time returns at 2:00 Sunday morning. Be sure to turn your clocks back an hour either Saturday night before you go to bed or on Sunday morning when you get up.

Fourteen local leaders—including two youths—who have served the Meramec Region, will be honored for their community service efforts on November 12^th during Meramec Regional Planning Commission’s 2008 Annual Dinner. This year’s event will be held at the St. Robert Community Center at St. Robert.  Those volunteers, both adult and youth nominations, to be recognized for community contributions and volunteer efforts in our area include: Stan Podorski of KSMO Radio and Kathryn Hunt, both nominated by Dent County Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles. The Eugene E. Northern award, the highest honor given by MRPC for volunteerism and community service, will also be named at the dinner. The public is invited to attend the annual dinner in St. Robert. The evening will begin with a reception from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m., featuring hors doeuvres and drinks. Dinner, prepared by the Waynesville Technical School’s Culinary Arts Class, will be from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. The program and awards presentation will follow the dinner and is scheduled to begin at 7:30 p.m. Joe Driskill, executive director of the Leonard Wood Institute, will be the guest speaker. The cost of a ticket to attend the event is $22.50 per person. Reservations can be made by calling the MRPC at (573) 265-2993.

The St. Louis Blues will host the Carolina Hurricane tonight at 7:30. The Blues, who are 5-3 on the year, will end a seven game home stand Saturday night against the Pittsburgh Penguins. You can hear the game tonight and Saturday on KSMO Radio.

The Missouri Football Tigers travel to Baylor Saturday and will face the Bears starting at 1:00. You can hear the game on KSMO Radio.

It took two extra nights, but the Phillies have finally put an end to Philadelphia's 25-year major sports title drought. Eric Bruntlett scored on a Pedro Feliz single in the seventh inning and the Phillies beat Tampa Bay, 4-3, in Game 5 of the World Series, wrapping up the franchise's second title in history.
