The Salem Police Department released their reports involving a traffic stop, an active warrant, assault and a transported patient. On Friday, October 23rd at 5:44 p.m. a vehicle was stopped for a traffic violation that led to the arrest of an 18-year old female of Sandoval, Illinois for possession of drug paraphernalia.  She posted bond and was issued a summons to appear in court then released. On Saturday, October 24th at 5:35 p.m. an officer observed a 30-year old Salem male, who had an active warrant from Phelps County.  He was taken into custody and incarcerated pending extradition from Phelps County. On Sunday, October 25th at 9:06 a.m. an officer was detailed to the 300 block of West Ninth Street in reference to an assault.  The report revealed a 30-year old Salem male had assaulted a 21-year old Salem male.  Further investigation led to the arrest of the suspect who was issued a summons to appear in court and released. At 4:29 p.m. that afternoon, an officer of the Salem Police Department transported a 41-year old Salem male to the Veterans Hospital in Columbia in lieu of a mental commitment order.

Superintendent Steve Bryant of the Salem R-80 school district reports that the school started experiencing the affects of the influenza late last week, both the seasonal and H1N1. The district began preparing for this before school started as they started receiving notices and guidance from the Center for Disease Control, Department of Health and Senior Services, Dent County Health Department, and the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education. The custodial staff began following cleaning procedures as outlined by the CDC, which includes using disinfectant on doorknobs, handrails, and desktops on a daily basis. The weight rooms and restrooms have also been stepped up on their cleaning process as well.  Buses are completely disinfected on the weekends and cleaned daily. Teachers have also been instructing students on the new proper techniques for sneezing and the need for proper and continuous hand washing. The CDC guidelines stress the importance of staying home when sick, separating ill students and staff, hand hygiene and respiratory etiquette, routine cleaning, and early treatment of high risk students and staff. The district started noticing an increase in absences due to illness about two weeks ago and began monitoring the attendance rate much closer than usual.  Attendance was running fairly normal until last Thursday and there were a couple of buildings lower than normal and it was hoped the long three day weekend would help. It did not and on Monday there was a steep drop in attendance and the district notified the Dent County Health Department and other local health officials to make them aware of the situation as outlined by the CDC. They were informed of the district’s plans of monitoring the situation and agreed they were following correct procedure. The low attendance day this week was on Tuesday as it dropped to 79.15% but increased to 82.3% on Wednesday. The district will continue to watch it closely and keep in close contact with the Health Department. The CDC stresses the decision to dismiss school should be made locally and should balance the goal of reducing the number of people who become seriously ill or die from influenza with the goal of minimizing social disruption and safety risks to children sometimes associated with school dismissal. Based on the experience and knowledge gained in jurisdictions that had large outbreaks in spring 2009, the potential benefits of preemptively dismissing students from school are often outweighed by negative consequences, including students being left home alone, health workers missing shifts when they must stay home with their children, students missing meals, and interruption of students’ education. Superintendent Steve Bryant stated “this is a very tenuous situation to be in and is very difficult to outguess. We continue to seek guidance from the CDC and our local health officials and realize it is impossible to please everyone on this contentious situation”.
