The Dent County Commissioners held their regular meeting Monday morning at the Dent County Courthouse. In the road report, Commissioner Bobby Simpson from District 1 reported that grading would be done on Dent County Roads 4220, 5650, 5680, 6070 and 6110. He said that workers were working on two driveways on Dent County Road 5120, and materials were being added to Dent County Road 5210. Simpson stated that workers were hauling rock to the roads in the Sinkin’ Township. District 2 Commissioner J.J. Tune stated that grading was going to be done on Dent County Roads 2110, 3140, 3150 and 3180. He said road signs were being erected on Dent County Roads 5320 and 5325, and a loader was being serviced. He also said that workers were getting oil for the durapatcher. Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles was going to be attending a Regional Workforce Investment Conference on Wednesday and Thursday of this week. Dent County Clerk Angie Curley says that she has received 747 requests for absentee ballots and the last day to have a ballot mailed to you will be this Wednesday. Her office will be open this Saturday from 8:00 until noon for those who need to absentee vote. Absentee voting will continue through Monday, November 3
rd. At 10:00 Monday morning, the commission received two estimates for the ADA work to the front entrance and bathroom at the Judicial Building Annex: one from Gray Construction for $18,500; and one from Conway Construction for $19,700. The commissioners unanimously voted to go with the low bid estimate from Gray Construction. At the last meeting, the commissioners received two phone bids for metal siding for the Judicial Building Annex east side: one from Gray Construction for $5,400, and the other from Rainbow Siding for $5,050. The commission agreed unanimously to go with the bid from Rainbow Siding. Dent County Collector Dennis Medlock reported to the commissioners that 2008 tax bills would be mailed out around the November 4
th date. The next meeting of the Dent County Commissioners will be held Thursday morning at the courthouse and the meeting is open to the public.
The Salem Police Department released their reports for incidents that occurred last week. On October 20th at 1:38 p.m. an officer was detailed to Hocker Oil Company on Highway 32 East in reference to a leave without paying for fuel. The investigation of the report revealed that persons unknown pumped $13.18 in fuel into a red and white older model Ford extended cab pickup then left without paying. On October 22nd at 8:10 a.m. an officer was contacted at the department in reference to a cell phone that was stolen from the Salem Jr. High School. The investigation of the report led to the detention of two male juveniles of Salem. The cell phone was recovered and the juvenile suspects were released to their parents. The report will be forwarded to the juvenile officer. On October 22nd 10:12 p.m. an officer observed a suspicious vehicle on the lot of C&E Auto Sales. The investigation of the vehicle led to the arrest of a 24-year old male of Salem, for possession of marijuana and drug paraphernalia. The suspect was issued summons to appear in court and released. On October 24th at 10:37 p.m. a vehicle was stopped for a traffic violation. The investigation of the stop led to the arrest of an 18-year old Salem man for possession of drug paraphernalia. He was issued a citation to appear in court and released. On October 26th at 2:15 p.m. an officer was detailed to the 800 block of South Highway 19 in reference to a disturbance. The investigation of the report led to the arrest of a 50-year old Sullivan man for disorderly conduct. He was issued a summons to appear in court and released. The Sullivan Volleyball Lady Eagles ended the season for the Salem Lady Tigers in two straight games last night at Union. The Eagles dominated the first game, winning 25-14; then Salem played much better but came up short, losing 25-22. Carissa Richardson and Jarren Blankenship led the way for Sullivan with nine kills each. They will face the Lady Knights of St. Francis Borgia tonight at 5:30.
With the rain intensifying at Citizens Bank Park, the Rays rallied to tie the Phillies in Game 5 of the World Series, putting Philadelphia's championship on hold until tonight at least. After the Rays tied he score in the 6th inning, Major League Baseball commissioner Bud Selig announced the game would be suspended until there are proper playing conditions, whether that's tonight or Wednesday. The Phillies lead the series, 3 games to 1.
St. Louis Cardinals first baseman Albert Pujols was named the 2008 winner of the Roberto Clemente Award, bestowed on the player who combines outstanding play on the field with devoted work in the community.
Kansas City Chief’s running back Larry Johnson has reportedly been charged with simple assault for allegedly spitting his drink in a woman's face during an altercation at a nightclub on October 10. Johnson issued an apology last week for his actions and was benched for a second consecutive week. Johnson has already faced three charges for assaulting a woman since he came to the Chiefs. In 2003 Johnson was accused of aggravated assault and misdemeanor domestic battery for waving a gun at his ex-girlfriend, but the charges were dropped when he entered a domestic- violence program. In 2005, Johnson was accused of pushing a woman to the ground at another KC nightspot, but the charges were later dropped. The latest incident occurred less than a week after word surfaced that Johnson was facing a simple assault charge for pushing a woman at a Kansas City nightclub. Johnson faces a December court date in that case, which took place February 24 of this year.

Funeral services for Doris Jean Troutt of Steelville, age 78, will be held this morning at 11:00 at the First Assembly of God Church in Steelville.
