In closed session last Thursday, The Salem Memorial District Hospital Board of Directors performed their annual review of Hospital Administrator Dennis Pryor and extended his contract through the year 2014. They also approved giving Director of Emergency Services Tabitha Stanfast a $3,000 scholarship to pursue a Batchelor of Science in Nursing. The board then adjourned the meeting.

The Dent County Sheriff’s Department has announced that Dent County residents can help fight prescription drug abuse by participating in a Prescription Drug Take Back Day all day Saturday starting at 9 in the morning at the Dent County Sheriff's Office. The “Take Back Day” is a program where people can take their unwanted, expired, unused prescription drugs and have them properly disposed of, according Dent County Sheriff Rick Stallings said the decision to have a second “Take Back Day” was based on the successful one held locally last April which brought in 75 pounds of pills and liquid drugs. Fifty pounds was collected at Oak Grove Baptist Church and 25 pounds at the Dent County Sheriff's office. DEA officials took control of the drugs and they were destroyed by being incinerated. The service is free and anonymous, and no questions are asked how you got the drugs or where they came from.

An accident occurred at 11:15 Wednesday morning in Dent County on Highway 19 about a fourth of a mile south of Salem. According to the highway patrol report, a 1995 Toyota Tacoma driven by 63-year old Vicky Mercer of Salem ran off the right side of the roadway, struck an embankment, and overturned. Mercer was ejected from the vehicle and suffered moderate injuries. She was taken to the Salem Memorial District Hospital by ambulance. Mercer was not wearing a seat restraint at the time of the accident. The Toyota sustained extensive damage and was removed from the scene by Whitaker’s Towing of Salem.

The Salem Police Department has released their reports for thefts, property damage, and mental commitment orders. On Sunday, October 16^th at 5:15 in the evening, an officer was dispatched to the 800 block of East Rolla Road in reference to a theft. The investigation revealed that a person or persons unknown took a propane tank valued at $40 from the yard of a residence. On Monday, October 17^th at 7:41 in the evening, an officer was dispatched to a residence in the 600 block of East Gibbs Street in reference to property damage. The investigation revealed that a person or persons unknown damaged the window of a residence valued at $30. On Tuesday, October 18^th at 8:00 in the morning, an officer transported a 25-year old Overland male to Poplar Bluff Medical Center in lieu of a mental commitment order. On Wednesday, October 19^th at 3:44 in the afternoon, an officer was dispatched to the 800 block of North Washington Street in reference to a theft. The investigation revealed that a person or persons unknown took stereo equipment valued at $400 from the trunk of a white 1994 Mitsubishi. On Thursday, October 20^th at 9:30 at night, an officer transported a 24-year old Springfield male to the Ozark Medical Center in West Plains in lieu of a mental commitment order. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has awarded $15,000 grants to the Missouri University of Science and Technology in Rolla for two teams of students to design solutions to challenges in the developed and developing world. One team will develop a window ventilation system to keep energy costs down. The other team is developing a system for transmitting electrical power that reduces energy loss from switching back and forth between AC and DC current. The awards were given through EPA’s People, Prosperity and the Planet (P3) program, a national competition that challenges students, working together on interdisciplinary teams, to design and build sustainable technologies that improve quality of life, promote economic development, and protect the environment. After working on the project for eight months, the teams will take their designs to the 8^th Annual National Sustainable Design Expo on the National Mall in Washington, D.C. At the expo, the projects will be judged by a panel of experts and a select few will be awarded P3 Awards and Phase II grants up to $90,000 for students to further their designs, implement them in the field, or move them to the marketplace.

The Salem Tiger football team will be playing their regular season finale tonight at the School of the Osage as it will also be the last District game of the year. Salem is 5-4 on the year and 1-1 in district play. Since the Cardinals are in the World Series and will be playing Game 6 at the same time of the football game, KSMO must play the game back on delayed basis. The game will be broadcast on KSMO Radio and online at ksmoradio.com Friday afternoon starting at 3:15 starting with Tiger Talk and Coach Bill Schuchardt.

With persistent rain in the forecast for downtown St. Louis, Major League Baseball announced Wednesday afternoon that Game 6 of the World Series had been postponed and will be made up tonight. The Texas Rangers hold a 3-2 lead in the series over the St. Louis Cardinals. Jaime Garica and Colby Lewis will still be the pitching matchup, as the Cards will try to force a Game 7. You can hear the game on KSMO sarting with the pre-game show at 6:00.

Alexander Steen scored a pair of goals and Brian Elliott recorded his first shutout of the season, as the St. Louis Blues dominated the Vancouver Canucks, 3-0. Elliott made 32 saves to pick up his 10th career shutout for St. Louis, which has won three in a row. Elliott improved to 4-0-0 on the season. The Blues recorded their 1,500th win in franchise history. The Blues are now 5-4 on the year and will be in Calgary Friday to face the Flames.

Funeral services for Faith Eugenia Dillon of Washington, age 87, will be held today at 11:00 at the Britton-Bennett Funeral Home in Steelville. Interment will be in the Steelville Cemetery.

Funeral services for Ollie Cox of Salem, age 99, will be held Friday at 1:00 pm at the Wilson Mortuary in Salem. Visitation will be tonight from 5:00 to 7:00. Interment will be in the Cedar Grove Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Funeral services for James ‘Radis’ Skaggs of Viburnum, age 84, will be held Saturday at 10:00 at the Look Out Assembly of God Church in Viburnum. Visitation will be held Friday from 4:00 to 8:00 at the Britton-Bennett Funeral Home in Steelville. Interment will be in the Czar Cemetery in Viburnum.

Ronald Lee Baum, age 48, of Salem passed away October 19^th. No services will be held. All arrangements are under the direction of the Wilson Mortuary Chapel in Salem.
