The Salem Memorial District Hospital held their regular board of directors meeting Thursday evening at hospital library. Following the audit report from John Kooper of BKD Accounting Firm, Hospital Administrator Dennis Pryor said that the hospital inpatient admissions were way down for the month of September with only 45 patients admitted as the hospital had budgeted for 69. Because of this, the hospital inpatient revenue was almost $160,000 less than expected and this left the hospital with an excess of expenses over revenues of $75,970. The hospital did show excellent cash flows as the accounts receivable are down about $500,000 as Medicare is now mostly current. The cash flow increase for the month was $453,295. In the nurses’ report, there were 797 Emergency Room visits with 78 transfers as the ER turn around time dipped to an average of 112 minutes. There were also 163 ambulance runs with 172 patients assessed along with 22 dry runs. In September, there were 23 surgeries, 299 home health visits, 7,526 lab tests, 1,071 radiological procedures, 238 CT scans, 26 MRI scans, 15 nuclear med scans, 296 rehab treatments, 138 dialysis treatments, and 345 clinical visits with podiatry still the most used clinic. Director of Nurses Carol Lacy presented the Call Light report that showed that the response time the last quarter was 2.51 minutes. In the hospital auxiliary report, the breast cancer awareness dinner held on October 20^th was a huge success and will be held again next year. The holiday home tour now has six homes and there are already three gardens signed up or the garden tour to be held in June. Administrator Pryor reported that the Employee Commitment to Health Challenge ended in September with the 1^st place winner losing 12.1% of their body weight. The inpatient and emergency room surveys were reviewed and again, all areas received over a 90% satisfactory level. Pryor reported that the Physicians Office Building 3 continued to move along and should now be completed by November 15^th although he is still hoping for an early November date. Pryor reported that the consortium did not get an insurance company to offer a fully insured health insurance program which was disappointing. The hospital’s health insurance is currently self-funded and that type of program was offered by some companies. Pryor did want to remind people that a general health screening would be held on November 11, 12 and 13^th at the Hospital Library from 6:00 to 9:00 in the morning. He also said that the Missouri Enterprise did not get the grant and there will be no new video for recruitment at this time. The board approved the hiring of an Assistant Administrator that will be Mr. Paul McVicker. He will begin on November 10^th and the main duties of the position for the first three years will be dedicated to electronic medical records. McVicker has an accounting degree and was comptroller at the West Plains and Lake of the Ozark Hospitals, and has spent the last nine years with the Missouri Hospital Association in their communications department. The board reviewed a number of changes suggested to the bylaws at the meeting but cannot vote on the changes until the next meeting. The board heard about the Palliative Care Unit which is just a new name for the Terminal Care Unit. Carol Lacy announced that a plaque is being put outside the rooms listing all the people who have donated items to the unit. It was also announced that the hospital would have a trick or treat event on Friday night on the patio where kids came come out for a free and safe Halloween from 6:00 to 8:00. In purchases, the board approved the purchase of a Hon office chair from Automated Business Systems for $250 for the Board of Director’s room. They also approved the purchase of three computers from Automated Business Systems for the IT department for $1,863, purchased a compact freezer for rehabilitation for $170 from Wal-Mart, and bought a Scift-Pro II Ergonometer from Simmons Preston for $4,501 for rehab. The only non-budgeted purchase for the month was a GE Front Loading Washer bought from Salem Refrigeration for $700. The board then voted to go into closed session.

Sullivan scored two touchdowns in the 4^th quarter to come from behind and beat the Salem Tigers Friday night by the score of 19-13. Yousef Ibrahim led the Tigers with 165 yards rushing and a touchdown. Cody Wofford also score for Salem who falls to 7-2 on the year and will have to win at St. James Friday night to advance to the playoffs as a wildcard.

The Salem Lady Tiger Volleyball Team will be at Union this afternoon at 5:30 to face the Lady Eagles of Sullivan in District play. The cost of admission is $3.00 and if you can’t make it to the game, you can hear the contest on KSMO Radio and online at www.ksmoradio.com.

Chase Daniel threw for five touchdowns to tie a school record and had 302 yards through the air, as the 16th-ranked Missouri Tigers blanked the Colorado Buffaloes, 58-0, at Faurot Field Saturday night. Daniel completed 31-of-37 passes for Missouri (6-2, 2-2 Big 12), which was coming off consecutive losses to Oklahoma State and Texas. Jeremy Maclin had 11 receptions for 134 yards and two scores, while Chase Coffman and Tommy Saunders each had a touchdown catch. Missouri will play at Baylor Saturday at 1:00.

Ben Bishop and Marek Schwarz combined for a shutout, and the St. Louis Blues crushed the Florida Panthers, 4-0, at Scottrade Center Saturday night. Bishop, who at 6-foot-7 is the tallest goaltender ever to play in the NHL, became the starter when Manny Legace injured himself when he tripped on a carpet laid out for vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin in Friday's loss to the Kings. Bishop made 12 saves in his first career start, and Schwarz saved all five shots he faced in the win. Brad Boyes notched two goals, and Keith Tkachuk and Paul Kariya each tallied a goal apiece for the Blues, who have won four of six. Andy McDonald assisted on three of the goals in the victory. The Blues will be off until Thursday when they play Carolina.

Kevin Faulk rushed for 60 yards on 13 carries and his 15-yard touchdown reception late in the fourth quarter was the difference as New England topped St. Louis, 23-16, at Gillette Stadium. Donnie Avery caught six balls for a game-high 163 yards and a touchdown for the Rams (2-5), who suffered their first loss after two consecutive wins under interim head coach Jim Haslett. Marc Bulger was 18-of-34 for 301 yards with one score and a pick, while Antonio Pittman led all rushers with 83 yards on 19 attempts.

Brett Favre's 15-yard touchdown pass to Laveranues Coles with one minute to play carried the New York Jets to a 28-24 come-from-behind win over the Kansas City Chiefs. Tyler Thigpen turned in a stellar performance, completing 25-of-36 passes for 280 yards and two touchdowns. Dwayne Bowe had six receptions for 102 yards, while Tony Gonzalez added 79 yards on six balls and a score.
