The Dent County Commissioners met for their regular meeting Monday morning at the Dent County Courthouse. In the road report, District One Commissioner Dennis Purcell said that grading was going to be done on Dent County Road 6520 and 6650, and that brush would be cut on Dent County Road 5680. Purcell said that two trucks would be hauling creek rock and two workers would be screening gravel. Purcell said that he attended the Missouri Forest Resource Advisory Council meeting Friday concerning Bio-Mass and said about 100 people were in attendance. He said that the meeting was very informative as members from the Forest and Missouri Department of Conservation gave their view as did Mike Mills from Pro Energy. District Two Commissioner Gary Larson had a previous commitment and was not in attendance at the meeting, so Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles reported that workers in District Two were repairing the chip and seal on Dent County Road 3210 and other workers were helping with the Road and Bridge shed addition. Skiles wanted to let the public know of the Region I Homeland Security Oversight Committee meeting Thursday in St. James at the Nelson Hart Community Park where a number of the pieces of equipment purchased with HSOC dollars will be on display from 10:00 to 11:30. He also said that a public hearing would need to be held on the budget adjustment requested by the Tourism Tax Committee to go from $50,000 to $65,000 in expenditures. This would leave a projected ending balance on December 31^st in the fund of $81,279. The commission voted to hold the public hearing at 9:45 on November 8^th. Dent County Clerk Angie Curley said that she attended the health insurance consortium meeting and reported that premiums are expected to only increase about 5% this year and that would mean the insurance for the county employees under the current plan with the same coverage should be about $366.00 per employee per month. She said that Wednesday is the last day that an absentee ballot can be mailed out, that Saturday the clerk’s office will be open from 8:00 AM until noon for absentee voting, and that Monday will be the last day to vote absentee. At the last meeting, Donna Holden and Stacey Stockstill with the Public Defenders Office came in to discuss the increases in the expenses of their office. Holden said that their current lease will expire December 31^st and that the Public Defenders Office space is currently too small and they are running out of room. She said that Dent County’s share of the new proposed lease would be an additional $1,600 per year. The commission will get back with her at a later date. The next meeting of the Dent County Commissioners will be Thursday morning at 9:00 at the Dent County Courthouse and the meeting is open to the public.

Nominations are in and winners be announced at the 2010 Salem Area Chamber of Commerce Awards Banquet, Silent Auction and regular Auction to be held on Thursday, November 4^th at the Salem City Hall Auditorium beginning at 6:00 pm. Nominations for Business of the Year include Doe Run Recycling Division, Montauk Lodge and Salem Publishing Company. The Non-Profit Organization of the Year nominations include the Dent County Health Center, Enrichment Services of Dent County and the Riverways Pregnancy Resource Center. Nominations for Small Business of the Year include C&E Auto Sales, Roberts-Judson Lumber Company and Pratt, Mitchell and Company. Karen Happel from the City of Salem, Sherry Lea from the Salem TCRC and Charles Whitmire from the Whitmire Inn were nominated for the Customer Service Award. Nominated for the Citizen of the Decade Award was Geriann Ball, Jerry Craig and Stan Podorski. Tickets are available for $20 per person at the Chamber office located at 200 South Main or from any Board member. 

An accident occurred at 7:40 Sunday night in Iron County on Highway 32 about half a mile west of Route A. According to the highway patrol report, the trailer from a 2004 Freightliner driven by 45-year old Mehmooda Malik of Shoreline, Washington, crossed the center line and struck the front of a 1996 Dodge driven by 21-year old Elizabeth Fishburn of Bixby. The Freightliner then traveled off the side of the roadway into the ditch. Fishburn and an occupant in the Dodge, 22-year old Paul Heath of Viburnum, suffered minor injuries and were taken to the Iron County Hospital in Pilot Knob. Malik was the only one wearing a seat restraint at the time of the accident. The Dodge was totaled in the accident and removed from the scene by Anderson’s Towing of Belleview. The Freightliner sustained minor damage and was driven from the scene.
