The Dent County Commissioners met for their regular meeting Thursday morning at the Dent County Courthouse. Dent County Treasurer Denita Williams reported that the CART tax received by the county in the month of October was up $1,607.13 from the month of September, and that put the county ahead $480.97 over the same 10-month collection period as last year. In the road report, District 1 Commissioner Dennis Purcell said that grading was going to be done on Dent County Roads 5600, 6010, 6580 and 6585. He also said material would be added and grading done on county road 5060, and brush was going to be cut on Dent County Road 5110. District 2 Commissioner Gary Larson stated that materials would be added and grading was going to be done on Dent County Roads 2120 and 2135, while only materials would be added to county road 2130. Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles said that he would be attending the Region I Homeland Security Oversight Committee meeting at the MRPC in St. James Thursday, and he wanted to remind those who wanted to attend the MRPC Annual Awards Dinner in Potosi at the YMCA on November 14th to make their reservation by October 29th. Those who want to make their reservation may do so by calling the MRPC at 573-265-2993. Skiles reported that all three commissioners and the county clerk attended the MAC Annual Conference this week and found it to be very informative. All three commissioners as well as the county clerk also attended the Groundbreaking Ceremony at the Salem Community Center at the Armory held Thursday morning at 11:00. Dent County Clerk Angie Curley wanted to announce as per state statute that she has begun the preparation of the 2014 Dent County Budget. At the last meeting, the Missouri Department of Conservation agreed to pay for rock on the 1.7 mile Clements Conservation Road that will take 150 ton per mile, on the 2.15 mile Brown Conservation Road that also takes 150 ton per mile, and the 11.6 mile White River Trace Road that takes 200 ton per mile. Bids were also taken for fuel for the Road and Bridge Department and MFA Oil Co. was the low bidder at $2.87 per gallon. The next meeting will be held Monday morning at 9:00 at the Dent County Courthouse and the meeting is open to the public.

An accident happened Thursday morning at 11:15 in Dent County on county road 4210 about three miles northeast of Salem. According to the highway patrol report, a 1991 Chevrolet S-10 driven southbound by 22-year old Buck Prater of Salem, failed to negotiate a curve, the vehicle struck a tree and came to rest on its side. Prater suffered minor injuries and was taken to the Salem Memorial District Hospital for treatment. Prater was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of accident and the Chevy S-10 sustained extensive damage and was taken from the scene.

Two of The Doe Run Company’s (Doe Run) Southeast Missouri Mining and Milling Division (SEMO) mines have earned the highly coveted Sentinels of Safety award, the most prestigious mine safety award in the nation. The Buick Mine won for outstanding safety performance in the Large Underground Metal Mine category, and the #29 Mine was honored in the Small Underground Metal Mine category. This is the sixth Sentinels of Safety award for Buick Mine and the first for #29 Mine. Doe Run and its predecessor companies have now won the Sentinels of Safety award 27 times since 1971. Co-sponsored by the National Mining Association (NMA), the Sentinels of Safety awards were developed in part by President Herbert Hoover more than 75 years ago and are recognized as one of the nation’s oldest and most admired occupational safety awards. The awards honor the safest large and small underground mines in the country for 2012, based on employee safety data provided to the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA). The company credits these awards to employees’ commitment to continuous improvement through proactive safety training and programs. SEMO employees complete daily mobile equipment and work area inspections, and report any potential hazards. Supervisors use the Behavior Based Safety (BBS) program to observe employee behavior, reward safe actions or provide one-on-one coaching to correct unsafe behaviors. SEMO employees also receive 40 hours of in-depth training on MSHA guidelines upon hire, as well as annual safety training throughout their careers. Doe Run’s Casteel Mine and Brushy Creek Mine also finished in the top five for the Large Underground Metal Mine category. Earlier this year, SEMO reached 2.75 million safe work hours without a lost-time injury. Prior to this accomplishment, SEMO’s highest achievement on record was 1.25 million safe hours.

The St. Louis Cardinals needed Michael Wacha to play stopper and the 22-year-old rookie needed help. A sacrifice fly from Matt Carpenter, a couple of Red Sox errors and Carlos Beltran's first World Series RBI was enough. The Cardinals trailed when Wacha came out after six innings but scored three runs in the seventh Thursday night to beat the Red Sox 4-2 in Game 2 of the World Series. The best-of-seven series is tied 1-1 with Game 3 set for Saturday in St. Louis and you’ll be able to hear it on KSMO Radio starting with the pre-game show at 6:00.

The St. Louis Blues will host the Vancouver Canucks tonight at the Scottrade Center beginning at 7:00. The Blues are 5-1-1 on the year. KSMO will join this game in progress following the Salem Tiger football game.

The 5th ranked Missouri Tiger football team will look to stay undefeated when they host the 20th ranked South Carolina Gamecocks on Saturday. Missouri is 7-0 on the year and 3-0 in the SEC. Kickoff is set for 6:00 and KSMO will not broadcast this game due to the World Series.

The Kansas City Chiefs will host the Cleveland Browns on Sunday at noon. The Chiefs are 7-0 on the year and sit stop the AFC West.

The St. Louis Rams will be hosting the Seattle Seahawks on Monday night at 7:40. The Rams are 3-4 on the year.

Funeral services for Theresa “Terry” Lynn Crowley of St. James, age 56, will be held tonight at 7:00 at the James and Gahr Mortuary in St. James. Visitation will be from 4:00 until service time at the James and Gahr Mortuary. 

Funeral services for Thomas “Doc” Enloe of Columbus, Georgia, formerly of Salem, age 63, will be held Saturday at 2:00 at the Dent County Memorial Chapel. Visitation will be from 12:00 (noon) until service time. Interment will be held at a later date in Salem. Memorials are suggested to the Salem Masonic Lodge 225.

Funeral services for Betty L. Glenn of Salem, age 77, will be held Sunday at 11:00 at the Wilson Mortuary in Salem. Visitation will be Saturday night from 6:00 to 8:00. Interment will be in the New Hope Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the New Hope Cemetery.

Funeral services for Jerry R. Hedrick of Salem, age 77, will be held Monday at 11:00 at the Wilson Mortuary in Salem. Visitation will be Sunday from 4:00 to 6:00. Interment will be in the Morrison Cemetery. Memorial may be made to Project Win.

Funeral services for Howard Eugene Adair of Rolla, age 86, will be held Wednesday at 11:00 at the James and Gahr Mortuary in Rolla. Visitation will be Tuesday night from 5:00 to 7:00. Interment will be in the Rolla City Cemetery with full military honors.

Memorial services for Veda R. Dowd of Rolla will be held privately at a later date with family and friends. All arrangements are under the direction of the James and Gahr Mortuary in Rolla.
