Troop I of the Missouri State Highway Patrol, recorded nine traffic fatalities during the month of September. This is five more than September of 2006. For the month of September in the Troop I area there was 185 accidents with 105 injuries and nine fatalities, while the same time last year there were 210 accidents reported with 89 injuries and four fatalities recorded. The total fatalities for 2007 are 48 compared to 34 for the same time period last year. For the month of September, Crawford County reported 26 accidents with 12 injuries and one fatality, while Dent County reported 17 accidents with 12 injuries and no fatalities. Laclede County reported 34 accidents with 14 injuries and one fatality while Maries County reported 13 accidents with 7 injuries and three fatalities for the month of September. Phelps County reported 57 accidents with 34 injuries and one fatality and Pulaski County reported 38 accidents with 26 injuries and three fatalities. Captain Randy Becker, Commanding Officer of Troop I of the Missouri State Highway Patrol would like to remind everyone that cooler temperatures, shorter days and occasional fog and frost are signs that winter isn’t far around the corner. This is a good time to get your vehicle safety checked so it will be ready for winter driving conditions.

The Dent County Sheriff’s Department released their report for the month of September. For the month there were 83 9-1-1- calls, in which all were responded to with 12 of the calls being prank calls. The Department served 136 papers consisting of 82 civil papers, 51 criminal papers and three notices to vacate, plus they served 18 felony warrants and 19 misdemeanor warrants. During the month, there were eight drug arrests and 12 domestic disturbance calls were addressed. The Sheriff’s Department issued 47 tickets, made 18 DWI arrests and made 52 traffic stops. The Dent County Sheriff’s Department also conducted three death investigations. For the month of September, the Sheriff’s Department investigated five burglaries, six assaults, eight thefts, four reports of trespassing/property line disputes and seven property damage reports. The Department spent 139 hours working in court and 19 hours testifying. The Dent County Sheriff’s Department handled a total of 211 calls during the month and made 11 community policing appearances. In the Dent County Jail Report for September, there were 44 prisoners incarcerated for the month with an average daily total of 12. There were nine transfers to the Department of Corrections and 12 transfers to or from other departments, and two transfers to a mental facility. During the month of September, the sheriff’s department drove a total of 15,339 miles on criminal investigations, patrolling and prisoner transportation.

An accident happened in Shannon County on Highway 19 about three miles south of Eminence at 4:15 Tuesday afternoon. According to the highway patrol report, a 1997 Ford Contour driven by 17-yaer old Cristy Jones of Salem, lost control of her vehicle on a curve and slid into the path of a 1996 Dodge pickup driven by 24-year old Elizabeth Voyles of Winona. Voyles suffered minor injuries and was taken by ambulance to the St. Francis Hospital in Mountain View. Both vehicles sustained moderate damages in the accident and were towed from the scene by Tyler’s of Eminence. Jones was wearing a seat restraint at the time of the accident while Voyles was not. Jones was cited for failure to drive on the right side of the roadway and for failing to display proof of insurance.

The Dent County Schools, Salem R-80, Oak Hill R-I, Green Forest R-II, Dent-Phelps R-III and Northwood R-IV will be closed on Friday, October 26th. Classes will resume on Monday, October 29th.

The Dent County Sheriff’s Department released their reports involving toolboxes taken, a back window being shot out, and arson. On October 7th, the department received a report from a resident who had left a 1990 Dodge Caravan back in September, parked behind a vacant house on DD Highway. When the resident returned, the end of September, two toolboxes containing assorted hand tools were missing. On October 8th at 4:45 in the afternoon, the department received a report of a back window being shot at of a car being driven down Highway K. The window was struck the left center of the window, but did not penetrate the glass. That evening at 6:06, the department received a report of arson. When the deputy arrived, it was reported that a fire had been set to the front porch around 4:00 am that day. A 14-year old female runaway was located the same day and taken into custody pending charges of first-degree arson. Anyone with any information regarding these incidents, which are still under investigation, is asked to contact the Dent County Sheriff’s Department by calling 729-3241.

Brad Boyes scored two power-play goals to lead the St. Louis Blues to a 4-2 victory over the Anaheim Ducks in a raucous and physical game at Scottrade Center. Keith Tkachuk also scored for the Blues, who bounced back after a loss to Minnesota on Saturday and won for the fifth time in seven games this season. Manny Legace made 14 saves in the win. Paul Kariya added an empty-net goal for the Blues and had three assists as well. The Blues finished 2-for-5 on the power play in the games as they will travel to Columbus to face the Blues Jacekts Thursday night at 6:00 on KSMO Radio.

The Colorado Rockies will try and continue one of the most impressive runs in recent memory when they open the World Series against the Boston Red Sox Wednesday night at Fenway Park. Jeff Francis will pitch for the Rockies, while Josh Beckett heads to the mound for Boston. Colorado has incredibly won 21 of its last 22 games to get to this point and enters the Fall Classic as the first team to ever sweep not only the Division Series, but the League Championship Series. Both the Red Sox and Rockies made roster moves Tuesday that affected their starting rotations. Boston left veteran knuckleballer Tim Wakefield off its roster as manager Terry Francona will go with Curt Schilling in the second game of the series while Daisuke Matsuzaka will pitch in Game 3. Colorado then activated pitcher Aaron Cook from the disabled list and plan to start the right-hander in Game 4. Ubaldo Jimenez will take the mound in Game 2 while Josh Fogg will go in Game 3.

A Memorial Mass for Dean A. Black, age 65, who passed away on September 14, 2007, will be held on Saturday, October 27th at 11:00 at the Epiphany of Our Lord Catholic Church in St. Louis. Interment will be Sunday, October 28th at 1:00 at the Mt. Herman Cemetery with Ken Fiebelman officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital in Memphis, Tennessee. All the arrangements are under the direction of the James & Gahr Mortuary in Salem.

Funeral services for Patricia A. Aten, age 65, of St. James, will be held Saturday at 11:00 at the James & Gahr Mortuary in St. James. Visitation will be Friday night from 6:00 to 8:00 with a prayer service at 5:45. Interment will be in the Rosati Cemetery. 

Funeral services for James Dale Barton, age 63, of Rolla, are incomplete at this but under the direction of the James & Gahr Mortuary of Rolla.
