The Salem Police Department released their reports for October 13th through the 20th involving assaults, peace disturbances and an order protection violation. On October 13th at 12:30 in the morning, officers were sent to the 1100 block of South Macarthur in reference to a peace disturbance that led to the arrest of a 22-year old Salem male for disorderly conduct, a 20-year old Salem male and a 19-year old Salem female for resisting arrest. There were all issued a summons to appear in court and released. On October 13th at 3:34 in the afternoon, an officer was detailed to the 1100 block of West Thomas in reference to people fighting. The report revealed a 36-year old female and a 15-year old male juvenile, both of Salem, had assaulted a 15-year old male juvenile of Salem. Both suspects were arrested and released pending a warrant application and referral to the juvenile officer. On October 18th at 8:24 in the morning, an officer was sent to the Salem Jr. High School in reference to disorderly conduct. The report led to the detention of two 15-year old male juveniles of Salem. Both juveniles were released to their parents and will be referred to the juvenile officer. Later the same evening, an officer was detailed to the 600 block of West Glendale in reference to a violation of a full order of protection that led to the arrest of a 46-year old Salem male. He was incarcerated pending application of a warrant. On October 20th at 1:23 in the afternoon, an officer was detailed to the Salem Jr. High School in reference to an assault. The report revealed that a 17-year old Salem male had assaulted a student and a teacher. He was arrested, issued a summons to appear in court and released. Later the same evening at 9:26, an officer was sent to the 100 block of North Park in reference to a domestic assault. The report revealed that a 22-year old Salem male had assaulted a 25-year Salem female. He was arrested for 2nd degree domestic assault, and was incarcerated pending the application of a warrant.

Roadwork will continue in the area this week. In Crawford County, contractor crews will be diamond grinding and striping on Interstate 44 from the Franklin County line west to 0.68 miles west of Route H in the westbound lane in Crawford County. There will be one-lane traffic associated with this road construction. MoDOT maintenance crews will also be blade patching on Route P in Crawford County. In Dent County, contractor crews will be grading, paving and doing bridgework on Highway 72 from south of Route FF to Highway 32 in Dent County. The contractor will continue removing the old Route 72 and hauling material in off-road dump trucks along the old road this week as well as finishing the new three lane section between Route J and the Highway 32-72 junction. Flaggers will stop traffic where trucks are crossing the new lanes. The asphalt crews will also continue to work on Route H, Route C and entrances along Route 72 in Phelps County, MoDOT maintenance crews will be working on entrances on Routes M & K, and they will be pull paving in various locations on I-44 and Route E. In Phelps County, crews will also be blade patching on the North Outer Road at Doolittle and Route N. In Texas County, the contractor will be resurfacing Highway 63 from north of Highway 32 in Licking to south of Route E near Houston, a length of 10.87 miles. This project is now underway and is expected to be completed by November 15. This will be a slow moving operation with one lane open. Signs and flaggers will be in place, and motorists are advised to drive with caution and watch for workers on or near the roadway. Delays should be expected with this project.

The Salem Area Chamber of Commerce is excited to announce their 1st Annual Pumpkin Carving Contest. Entries will be checked in on October 30th and displayed Halloween night at the Farmers Market. Trick of Treating will be held on Tuesday, October 31st from 6:00 to 8:00 pm.

Congresswoman Jo Ann Emerson's Congressional Connection program was rescheduled to be in Salem this Friday from 1:30 to 2:30 at the chamber office. It is designed to establish a closer connection between constituents and the staff members who normally serve them in dealing with federal agencies or getting their opinions to Emerson.

Chris Carpenter continued to feel comfortable on the pitcher's mound at Busch Stadium, maintaining his home brilliance with eight shutout frames in his first World Series start as St. Louis took the series lead with a 5-0 victory over Detroit in Game 3 of the Fall Classic. Carpenter (1-0) struck out six without a walk and scattered three hits to lower his already major league-best 1.81 home earned run average this season. The right-hander also improved to 5-1 in eight career postseason starts. Braden Looper pitched a perfect ninth to complete the shutout. Jim Edmonds knocked in a pair during the crucial fourth inning, breaking a scoreless game with a two-run double off Detroit starter Nate Robertson (0-1). St. Louis now holds a 2-1 series edge with Game 4 scheduled for tonight at Busch Stadium, the middle of three games slated in St. Louis. Steady rain, however, is forecast, leaving the game featuring Detroit's Jeremy Bonderman and St. Louis' Jeff Suppan in doubt. If played, you can hear the game on KSMO starting at 7:00.

Major League Baseball and the players' union announced a new record five-year collective bargaining agreement Tuesday, keeping labor peace through the 2011 season. The deal was disclosed at a news conference prior to Game 3 of the World Series at Busch Stadium. The current labor deal was set to expire December 19. Baseball hasn't had a work stoppage since 1994-95, but four years ago it was real close with the players coming within hours of a strike before a settlement. There were a couple of changes with the new contract, which runs through December 11, 2011. Those include the elimination of some free agency deadlines. The minimum salary of a player will increase from $327,000 this year to $380,000 next season, escalating to $400,000 by 2009 with cost of living increases after that. There were also some changes to the amateur draft.

Alex Gordon, third baseman for the Royals' Double-A affiliate Wichita Wranglers, has been named the Topps/Minor League Player of the Year, the club announced on Tuesday. The 22-year-old from Lincoln, Nebraska was Kansas City's first-round pick and the second overall selection of the 2005 Free Agent Draft.

Funeral services for Betty Malone of Salem, age 74, will be held this morning at 11:00 at the James and Gahr Mortuary. Interment will be in the Morisson Cemetery.

Funeral services for Mable Sapaugh Major of Salem, age 86, are incomplete at this time but under the direction of the James & Gahr Mortuary of Salem.
