The Dent County Commissioners held their regular meeting Thursday morning at the courthouse. At the meeting, Jerry LaRue asked the commission if Dent County Road 2390 could have a 25 MPH speed limit and be chipped and sealed. Commissioner Tune told Mr. LaRue to get the speed limit set, he just needed to get the signatures of the people living on the road. Tune further stated that the last time a count was made on that road it showed that only about 40 cars and trucks use it which does not put the road at the top on the chip and seal list. Tune did say that he would talk with MoDOT again about the approaches and getting them paved a few more feet back. In the road report, Commissioner Bobby Simpson said that roads are fairly wet and crews will be performing maintenance on a grader, putting up signs, trimming tree limbs, and brush is being cut on the roads on the south side of Route A. Commissioner Tune reported that work crews would be installing some “Children at Play” signs and checking roads for downed signs, sweep off excess rock on some chip and seal roads, and do some miscellaneous maintenance on equipment. Commissioner Simpson said that the county received a letter from the State of Missouri Office of Administration concerning the National Forest Receipts and they needed to know by November 7th if the commission was going to allocate 15% of the money to Title 3 funds. The commission approved the allocation unanimously. Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles reported that the special waste collection held in Salem on October 18th collected 140 passenger tires, 41 TV’s, 32 monitors, 19 microwaves, 16 VCR’s, 32 dehumidifiers and 24 appliances. Skiles asked the commissioners about a request from the Salem Area Chamber of Commerce to hold a ceremony at the courthouse at the conclusion of the Christmas parade at which time the courthouse lights could be lit. The request was approved. Dent County Clerk Angie Curley reported that 660 requests for an absentee ballot have already been received, and the last day to request a ballot to be mailed to you will be Wednesday, October 28th. The last day to vote absentee will be on Monday, November 3rd, and the Dent County Clerk’s office will be open on Saturday, November 1st from 8:00 AM until noon for those who would like to vote. At the meeting, Marshall Derrick came in and told the commission that there is a problem with his rural addressing as the Dent County Road he lives on was changed to Dent County Road 3185, but the notice he got from Spatial Data Research says that he lives on Dent County Road 3183. The commission made the contacts in an attempt to quickly resolve the problem. At the last meeting, Jo Ann Wells asked the commissioners if the Dent County Museum could put up a sign at the courthouse on Sunday advertising the hours the museum is open and the request was approved. The next meeting of the Dent County Commissioners will be held Monday morning at 9:00 at the Dent County Courthouse and the meeting is open to the public.

At the Salem Memorial District Hospital Board of Director’s regular meeting Thursday night, auditor John Kooper from BKD Accounting Firm gave a glowing report for the hospital. He said that the hospital finished the year with a net profit of $267,951 which is a net profit margin of 1.7% and that is slightly below normal. But with the low long term debt amount of $710,780 of which most is interest free, and the solid control of other liabilities; the hospital has a long-term debt to capitalization ration of 7.5% way below the 29.97% norm, and a current ratio of current assets to current liabilities of 3.90-1 and that is way above the 1.74 –1 average ratio. Kooper said that hospital’s excess of revenues over expenses before capital grants was at about 5%, and the rule of thumb in the medical industry was that to keep up with technological improvements, the hospital needs to keep up with the Medicare inflationary rate and that came in at 3.8% for the past year, so the Salem Hospital is in outstanding financial condition. Kooper went on to say that Salem did all this with gross revenue per adjusted discharge of just $5,928 which is $7,300 less than the rural Missouri average. He said that was possible due to the outstanding control on expenses that Salem has as the operating expense per adjusted discharge is only $3,270 and that is about half of the rural Missouri average of $6,465. The hospital saluted Kooper as he will be retiring in May with a special gift basket full of hospital niceties, a University of Missouri sweatshirt, two Missouri hats, a Kansas University cap as a gag gift and an SMDH hoodie. Kooper has been doing the audits for the Salem Memorial District Hospital since 1982.

The Salem Football Tigers will host the Sullivan Eagles in a key District 7 matchup tonight at the Salem High School Football Field. Salem and Sullivan both enter the game with a 7-1 record with Sullivan ranked 6^th in the state. Tonight is also Senior Night and the 19 seniors this year will be saluted prior to the game along with their parents. At halftime, a celebration of the 50^th anniversary of the Salem Tiger Football Program will be held with the introduction of many of the members from the 1^st Salem Football Team back in 1959. The Salem Lady Volleyball Tigers begin District play on Monday at 5:30 at the Union High School Gymnasium, as they will face Sullivan in the first round. Salem is seeded 5^th while Sullivan is seeded 4^th. The winner will face St. Francis Borgia in the semi-final on Tuesday at 5:30. You can hear the game on KSMO Radio and online at www.ksmoradio.com.

The Missouri Football Tigers take on the Colorado Buffaloes tomorrow afternoon at 5:30 in their Homecoming game. You can hear the contest on KSMO Radio at 4:30 with the pre-game show. Missouri is 5-2 on the year.

The St. Louis Blues will host the Los Angeles Kings tonight and Florida Panthers tomorrow night with both games starting at 7:30. KSMO Radio will join both games in progress after the Salem football game tonight and the Missouri game tomorrow night.

St. Louis Blues have assigned forward Chris Porter and defenseman Jeff Woywitka to Peoria (AHL).
