The Dent County Commissioners held their regular meeting at the Dent County Courthouse Monday morning. At the meeting, Commissioner Bobby Simpson reported that grading would be done in the Custer area on Dent County Roads 548, 623 and 633, and also east of Salem on Dent County Roads 507, 515 and 522. Simpson said that grading would also be done on Dent County Roads 633 and 642, and brush would be cut on Dent County Roads 637 and 641. In District 2, Commissioner J.J. Tune reported that grading would be done in the Lecoma area on Dent County Roads 211 and 211A, and in the Stonehill area on Dent County Roads 522 and 524. Tune said that grading would also be done on Dent County Roads 330, 331 and 406, and brush would be cut on Dent County Road 251. Presiding Commissioner Jim Biggs reported that the Commission received an application for a grant program through Homeland Security. The Commission would look over the application before any decision is made. At the previous meeting, Charlie Walker attended to discuss a concern he had about the county closing down county road 223 since a resident hung a gate that closed off the part of the road. Commissioner Tune explained that the road was a public road and could not be closed. Commissioner Biggs reported that he called Richard Cavender of MRPC to tell him that Dent County would not be pursuing the Hazard Mitigation Plan. Cavender said that all that is left to do is for the county to write a letter to that effect. The next meeting of the Commissioners will be Thursday morning at 9:00 and the meeting is open to the public.

An accident occurred Saturday morning at 9:00 in Dent County on Dent County Road 244 about ten miles west of Salem. According to the highway patrol report, a 1994 Phymouth Sundance driven by 25-year old Curtis Kirkman of Licking and 1996 Dodge Intreped driven by 32-year old Virginia Acuff of Salem, both met on a curve and collided. Kirkman along with a passenger, 26-year old Jermais Conway of Licking, both suffered moderate injuries and were treated at the scene by ambulance personnel. Acuff suffered moderate injuries and was taken to the Salem Memorial District Hospital by Salem ambulance. Kirkman was not wearing a seat restraint but all others involved were. The Plymouth Sundance was totaled in the accident and towed from the scene by Knight Towing of Salem. The Dodge Intreped sustained extensive damage and was towed by Whitaker Towing. Kirkman was cited for no insurance and Acuff was cited for no insurance and failure to register a motor vehicle.

An accident occurred on Saturday evening at 6:06 at the intersecction of Washington and Center Streets in Salem. According to the Salem Police report, a white 1994 Jeep Cherokee driven by Billy Ray Jackson Jr. of Salem and owned by Brad and Linda Thompson also of Salem, was traveling westbound on Center Street. Jackson crossed Washington Street into a private drive, avoided a parked car and started traveling southwest at which time the Jeep vaulted over a storm drainage ditch, continued southwest through a yard and collided with a house. The Jeep sustained extensive damage and was towed from the scene by Whitaker's Towing of Salem.

At the Community Betterment Awards Banquet Monday night, Salem took fourth in their category behind Lexington, Higginsville and Cameron. Two Dent Countians were saluted at the banquet as Libby Sanders received the Governor's Adult Leadership Award for her work as an instructor and as the Executive Director at the Bonebrake Center, and Zach Happel received the Governor's Youth Leadership Award for his participation in numerous activities at school and in the community, and who served two years as youth repreentative to the Missouri Community Betterment Conference in Columbia.

School will be dismissed early on Thursday and Friday due to parent/teacher conferences. Dismissal times will be for William Lynch, 12:40; Salem R-80 Upper Elementary, 12:45; Salem R-80 Junior and Senior High Schools, 1:00; and all the rural schools will dismiss at 1:15.

The World Series resumes tonight as the Cardinals and Tigers battle in St. Louis in Game 3 of the best-of-seven set. The teams split the first two games in Detroit, with the Cardinals taking the opener behind the great pitching of Anthony Reyes, with the Tigers responding in Game 2 on Sunday. Detroit ace Kenny Rogers continued his amazing postseason success on Sunday, holding the Cardinals to a pair of hits in eight shutout innings to run his playoff scoreless string to an incredible 23 innings. Rogers, however, has come under scrutiny for a possible foreign substance on his pitching hand, although both teams and the umpiring crew have said there was no real problem. The starters for Game 3 tonight are slated to be lefty Nate Robertson for Detroit and St. Louis ace Chris Carpenter. Game time is 7:30 and the pre-game show begins on KSMO at 7:00.

St. Louis Blues defenseman Jay McKee underwent successful surgery on his fractured right hand on Monday, presidentJohn Davidson announced. McKee was injured in the first period of Friday's 3-2 overtime loss against Vancouver. He was hit by the puck while attempting to block a shot by Canucks defenseman Rory Fitzpatrick. The contest was McKee's season debut. He missed the first six games with a sprained right knee. McKee spent his first ten NHL seasons with the Buffalo Sabres, tallying 17 goals, 81 assists and 470 penalty minutes in 582 games. The 29-year-old was signed by St. Louis as a free agent during the offseason. He is expected to miss the next four-to-six weeks.

Tiki Barber had 146 all-purpose yards, and the New York defense tortured Dallas with six sacks, four interceptions and a touchdown as the Giants easily bested the Cowboys, 36-22. The win marked the first time in franchise history that the Giants (4-2) beat the Cowboys (3-3) on Monday night at Texas Stadium.

The Missouri Tigers and Oklahoma Sooners will start play Saturday at Faurot Field starting at 11:00.

Funeral services for Virginia A. Lindsay of Salem, age 91, will be held this morning at 10:00 at the Sacred Heart Church. Interment will be in the Memorial Park Cemetery in St. Louis. Memorials are suggested to the Sacred Heart Church.

Funeral services for John Aubertin of Rolla, age 60, will be held this morning at 11:00 at the St. Patrick Catholic Church. Interment will be in the St. James Cemetery.

Funeral services for Betty Malone of Salem, age 74, will be held Wednesday morning at 11:00 at the James and Gahr Mortuary. Visitation will be held tonight from 5:00 to 8:00. Interment will be in the Morisson Cemetery.
