The Dent County Commissioners met Monday morning at the Dent County Courthouse. City of Salem Economic Development Director Ray Walden presented a letter to the commissioners concerning vacancies on the Enhanced Enterprise Zone Board. President of the Board, Dean Jones, recommended that Ryan Parker of US Food finish out the term of Jack Blackwell from US Foods through December of 2013; and that Steve Carvajal, the Superintendent of the Salem R-80 Schools, finish out the term of former Superintendent Cindy Rumpf through December of 2014. The commissioners approved the recommendations. Walden also invited everyone in the city and county out to the Community Strategic Planning meeting to be held tonight at 6:00 at the City Hall Auditorium. He also said that the IDA Board would be meeting Wednesday night at 6:00 at the Bank of Salem Courtesy Room and it is open to the public. Dent County Treasurer Denita Williams presented the sales tax collections received in October and they were up $6,495.38 over October of last year, and for the first ten months of 2012, the county has received $34,115.41 more than it did for the first ten months of 2011. In the road report, District 1 Commissioner Dennis Purcell said that grading was going to be done on Dent County Roads 2460, 5080, 5510 and 6250; and brush was going to be cut on Dent County Road 5400. Purcell stated that two men would be retrieving a three-foot culvert that washed out of a temporary crossing that was down by the Sinking Creek bridge. He also wanted to let people know to drive with caution when traveling on Dent County Road 5680 where the bridge construction work on the Swiney Bridge is taking place. District 2 Commissioner Gary Larson reported that grading was going to be done on Dent County Roads 2050, 2240, 2270, 4283, 4285 and 4287; and brush would be cut on Dent County Roads 2090 and 2510. Larson also said that men would be screening brown rock. Larson said that he talked with Matt Lloyd from Fabick and he will be bringing a grader to Dent County for the grader operators to drive and use. He also called Nick Girondo with the Missouri Department of Conservation again concerning the bridge on the Hospital Road as he has heard nothing from Girondo and he has not returned his calls.  Dent County Clerk Angie Curley said that absentee voting continues through November 5th during regular business hours at her office as well as on Saturday, November 3rd from 8:00 to noon. She said that the last day to request a mail-out ballot will be October 31st, and that sample ballots are available at her office for anyone who would like to pick one up. Curley said that the public test of the voting equipment would be held on October 30th at 9:00 at her office. The next meeting of the Dent County Commissioners will be Thursday morning at 9:00 at the courthouse and the meeting is open to the public.

The Salem Board of Aldermen held their regular meeting Monday night at the City Hall Council Chambers. Alderman Jerry Randell was not present due to illness. City Administrator Clayton Lucas said that the Flag Football program this year has been a big success with over 100 children in grades 4 through 6 participating. Lucas read a letter from Sullivan Publications about what has been done with the re-codification of the city ordinances and proposed changes. A workshop is going to be held with a representative of Sullivan Publications, the mayor, city administrator, city attorney and the board of alderman to discuss the proposed changes. Alderman Haydn Powell asked the city attorney about the real estate ordinance and William Camm Seay said that he is waiting to review the changes that are being made to the ordinances before moving forward with any new ordinance. Alderman Kenneth Nash discussed some storm water problems that are affecting three houses on Acuff at Grand. One of the homes there has a water leak that keeps the ground wet, and Street Superintendent Benny Bryson said that another property has a low basin where water sits below the drain pipe and the yard actually needs some dirt added. Nash also asked about the city workers doing work at the Farmer’s Market and that is the in-kind labor that the city provided to SACBA for their grant to pave the parking area. Alderman Phillip Giacomelli asked the city administrator about damage to the ceiling tiles at the Salem Freedom Activity Center. Lucas said that the security camera there had been moved but has now been reset properly. He also said that they are considering removing all the ceiling tiles from the activity room. Mayor Gary Brown reported that Waste Management stated that 81 tons of additional trash was picked up last week for Fall Cleanup Week. He also stated that 65 people brought items to the electronic waste collection this past Saturday to the Sewer and Water Construction parking lot. He said that he and City Administrator Lucas attended the MPUA meeting for the new electric supplier and that it appears that there will not be any major increase in the electric rates if things remain the same as now. The meeting was then adjourned.

The Salem Lady Tiger Volleyball team’s season came to an end on Monday, as they lost to Owensville in two sets in the first round of District play at Union. The Lady Tigers dropped their sets 25-12 and 25-9.

The San Francisco Giants have captured the National League pennant and now advance to the 108th edition of the World Series. The convincing 9-0 victory over the St. Louis Cardinals in Game 7 of the NLCS on Monday sealed the Giants' second trip to the Fall Classic in three years, where they will face the AL champion Detroit Tigers. Kyle Lohse was charged with five runs on six hits, and the usually opportunistic Cardinals went 0-for-11 with runners in scoring position and stranded 12 baserunners. The Cardinals, the NL's second wild card team, had won seven straight playoff games when facing elimination, including a Game 7 win over the Texas Rangers to win their 11th World Series title last year and a Game 5 thriller over the Washington Nationals earlier this month after they trailed by six runs. But Monday's deficit proved too much, as the Giants managed 14 hits throughout their lineup to win in convincing fashion.

After another unsuccessful meeting between the National Hockey League and the NHL Players Association, the NHL announced the cancellation of the 2012-13 regular-season schedule through November 1st. The lockout has now caused the cancellation of 135 regular-season games.
