The Dent County Commissioners met for their regular meeting at the courthouse and Commissioner Gary Larson was not in attendance. District 2 Road Supervisor Charlie Malone was in attendance to give the road report. He said that two trucks would be hauling gravel from the creek, and rock was going to be added to a soft spot on Dent County Road 2150. He said that other workers would be installing 25 MPH speed limit signs on Dent County Road 3270 and then check for downed road signs at various locations. Malone also said that the winter equipment is being checked and readied for the season. District One Commissioner Dennis Purcell said that rock was going to be added to Dent County Road 5090. He said that some of the workers were rebuilding a gearbox for one of the brush cutters, while others were repairing and replacing downed road signs. He also said that general maintenance was going to be done to the equipment. Purcell said that he attended a South Central County Commissioners meeting and it was reported that counties can expect to see a decrease in their MoPERM rates next year. Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles stated that he attended an Energized Missouri Communities meeting in Springfield on Wednesday, and the Department of Natural Resources has 12.5 million dollars to award to projects that will enhance energy efficiency efforts as well as create jobs. Of that money, 60% is to go to smaller cities and counties who can partner with other entities to submit an application. The application deadline will be in mid-December and only certain things qualify for these funds such as outdoor lighting or heating needs. Skiles said that DNR would have technical assistance available to help with these projects. Skiles went on to report that the satellite phone has been repaired and is now back in Dent County. He then reported that the sales tax revenues were up $6,300 for the month of September, but the revenues are still down about 1.25% year-to-date from last year. Dent County Clerk Angie Curley stated that she would be attending a National Voter Registration Act Spring Canvass training today to prepare for the 2010 election voter registration. At the last meeting, the commissioners unanimously agreed to have Deputy Clerk Crystal Pilkington fill in for Dent County Treasurer Denita Williams, in case of an emergency, to print checks. Joe Martin and Darrell Decker also attended the meeting and spoke to the commission about the county’s health consortium with Cox Healthcare. The next meeting of the Dent County Commissioners will be Monday morning at 9:00 and the meeting is open to the public.

An accident happened at 3:05 Thursday morning in Phelps County on Highway 68 about 12 miles south of Salem. According to the highway patrol report, a 1995 Mercury driven by 51-year old Jeffery Elmer of Salem was traveling southbound on highway 68. The Mercury struck a deer in the roadway. Elmer suffered minor injuries and was transported by ambulance to  the Phelps County Regional Medical Center in Rolla. He was not wearing a seat restraint at the time of the accident. The Mercury sustained minor damage and was towed from the scene by Spurgeon’s Towing.

Acting US Attorney Michael Reap announced that 28-year old Thomas Matthew Dillon was sentenced to two years probation and 40 hours of community service on charges of illegally obtaining prescription drugs. Dillon pleaded guilty in June to a felony count of illegally obtaining Vicoprofen and was sentenced Friday by US District Judge Donald J. Stohr. Reap commended the work on the case by the Dent County Prosecuting Attorney’s office, Dent County Sheriff’s Department, Missouri State Highway Patrol, South Central Drug Task Force, the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services, the bureau of Narcotics and dangerous Drugs, and Assistant US Attorney Noelle Collins who handled the case for the US Attorney’s Office.

Attorney Brandi Baird, who has just been appointed by Governor Jay Nixon as the full time replacement for Jessica Sparks who resigned on June 15^th, will hold a ”meet the public” gathering at the Salem City Hall Auditorium. The 36-year old attorney has been working with the Nanci R. Wisdom Law firm since 2004. At the Dent County Commissioner’s meeting Thursday, she indicated that she would be sworn in November 2^nd at 10:00 at the courtroom in the Dent County Courthouse. 

Senator Frank Barnitz of Lake Spring applauded the Department of Economic Development of naming the City of Rolla as a “Dream City”. The Downtown Revitalization and Economic Assistance for Missouri (DREAM) initiative is designed to help communities receive state assistance to ultimately improve the area’s economy. The DREAM initiative is a comprehensive approach to downtown revitalization that includes aid to navigate through various state assistance programs to help with job creation and community betterment projects. Support for DREAM cities includes technical assistance and planning, historic preservation, public infrastructure, façade renovation, housing development and additional trainings. The communities receive the designation for a 3-year period.

The Salem Football Tigers will be at Sullivan tonight to face the Eagles in a key district matchup starting at 7:00. Both teams won their first district match last week. The Missouri Tigers take on Texas Saturday night starting at 6:00. Missouri is 4-2 on the year and 0-2 in the Big 12. You can hera the game on KSMO Radio.

The St. Louis Blues will host the Minnesota Wild tonight at 7:00 and the Dallas Stars tomorrow night starting at 7:00. KSMO will join both games in progress: tonight after Salem Tiger Football and tomorrow night at the conclusion of the Missouri/Texas game.

The 5th and 6th grade Salem Youth Football Teams will host the mighty Mite Super Bowl Saturday at the Salem High School starting at noon. The championship game will be held at 7:00 and will feature the Salem Team 1 with a 5-0 record going against Houston. A total of five additional games will be held Saturday featuring three Mountain Grove teams, three Mountain View teams, the Salem Team 2, Seymore, Cabool and Willow Springs. Come out Saturday and support the Salem Youth Football Teams!
