The Dent County Commissioners held their regular meeting at the Dent County Courthouse Monday morning. At the meeting, District 1 Commissioner Bobby Simpson reported that roads had been drying up very quickly throughout district, but now that rain has arrived, grading would be done in the Montauk area on Dent County Roads 664 and 658. Simpson also said grading would be done on Dent County Roads 637 and 642 and brush would be cut on Dent County Roads 548 and 550. District 2 Commissioner J.J. Tune reported that conditions were very dry in the western half of the district, so spot grading was scheduled to be done on various roads around town. Tune also said that grading would be done in the Waterfork area and on Dent County Roads 213 and 213A. Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles reported that he and Commissioner Tune attended an Agro-Terrorism Meeting on Friday and he also a attended a series of Region I meetings Thursday in St. James. Senator Frank Barnitz’s assistant, Wilma Rowden, attended the meeting to discuss with the Commission any issues they had or would like to see brought up in the up coming Legislative Session. At 11:30 the Commission went in to closed session to discuss personal and real estate issues. At the previous meeting, Clinton Massey with the Juvenile Department came by to discuss with the Commission about a grant they had applied for. The grant is for $4,135.80 and would be used for the development of communication and other skills that children need to become responsible adults. It will be no cost to the county, but the money has to filter through the County Treasurer and the Juvenile Budget. The Commission said it would not be a problem and will allow the money to be filtered through the treasurer. The next meeting of the Commissioners will be Thursday morning at 9:00 and the meeting is open to the public.
In Jefferson City Monday night, the Missouri Community Betterment Awards were handed out with the city of Jameson winning the Grand Prize. The City of Salem in Category V came in a disappointing fourth this year as Eldon took first place in that category followed by Brookfield and Cameron. Also at the meeting, Salem had three citizens saluted for their tireless efforts in assisting their community. Receiving a 2007 Missouri Community Betterment Adult Leadership Award was Salem Memorial District Hospital Administrator Dennis Pryor for his community involvements including serving on the Board of Dent County Healthy Community as well as the Health Department Board and Health Advisory Committee of the Salem R-80 School District. Capturing a 2007 Missouri Community Betterment Youth Leadership Award was MU Freshman Erin Hamby who was an officer of the Salem FFA Chapter, was an honor student, was a youth board member of the Salem Area Community Betterment Association and served on numerous committees and fundraising projects. Lastly, Jerry Craig was honored by Missouri Community Betterment with the 2007 Ambassador Award. Jerry had served as the Salem Area Community Betterment Association’s only president since it was formed in 1994 and was its driving force until retiring and being replaced by Chris Mathes. Craig continues to do volunteer work with the Ozark Natural and Cultural Resource Center and serves on the SACBA advisory Board. He also serves on the Missouri Community Betterment Board.
An accident happened at noon Monday in Dent County on Highway 32 about six miles west of Salem. According to the highway patrol report, a 1993 Ford driven by Jeffrey Haughton of Theodosia was traveling eastbound on Highway 32. Haughton failed to negotiate a left hand curve, ran off the right side of the roadway and struck two trees and a fence. Haughton suffered minor injuries and was taken to the Salem Memorial District Hospital. He was not wearing a seat restraint at the time of the accident. The Ford sustained extensive damage and was towed from the scene by Whitaker’s Towing of Salem.
The Timber Volunteer Fire Protection District, founded in 1995, held a Grand Opening celebration on Sunday. The Timber Fire District started planning a little over two years ago, on land donated by the Shannondale Church, to build the fire station. It took about a year to complete. The Timber Volunteer Fire Protection District is made up of Fire Chief Todd Hamilton, currently nine firefighters as well as EMS and other personnel make up a 14 volunteer person roster. The Timber Volunteer Fire Protection District covers about a 136 square mile radius starting from the Gladden crossroad to just south of Round Spring and is referred to as the Newton Township.

The Salem Lady Volleyball Tiger season came to an end Monday evening at Marshfield against the Logan-Rogersville Lady Wildcats in two straight district semi-final games, 21-25 and 20-25. Salem had reached the semi-final with a win over the Ava Lady Bears by the scores of 25-23 and 25-21. Salem finished the year with a 13-15 and 2 record.
The St. Louis Cardinals announced that Tony La Russa has agreed to a two-year contract Monday to return as the manager of the St. Louis Cardinals. La Russa is the winningest manager in franchise history but was coming off a difficult 78-84, third-place season in 2007. Speculation was running rampant that the veteran manager would leave St. Louis after the Cards fired general manager Walt Jocketty earlier this month. La Russa's St. Louis record is a gaudy 1,055-887 and he has piloted the Cards to seven playoff appearances, six NL Central championships, two pennants and a 2006 World Series win over Detroit.
The St. Louis Blues will host the Anaheim Ducks tonight at the Scottrade Center. You can hear the game on KSMO starting at 7:30.

Funeral services for James William Barred of Salem, age 82, will be held Wednesday morning at 11:00 at the Wilson Mortuary Chapel in Salem. Visitation will be tonight from 6:00 to 8:00. Interment will be in the Jadwin Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society.
Funeral services for John T. Aufner of St. James, age 46, will be held Wednesday at 1:00 at the James & Gahr Mortuary in St. James. Visitation will be from noon until service time. Interment will be in the Rosati Cemetery in St. James.
A Memorial Mass for Dean A. Black, age 65, who passed away on September 14, 2007, will be held on Saturday, October 27th at 11:00 at the Epiphany of Our Lord Catholic Church in St. Louis. Interment will be Sunday, October 28th at 1:00 at the Mt. Herman Cemetery with Ken Fiebelman officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital in Memphis, Tennessee. All the arrangements are under the direction of the James & Gahr Mortuary in Salem.
