The Salem R-80 Board of Education held their regular meeting Thursday evening at the district administrative offices. At the meeting, Superintendent Steve Bryant gave the September membership count and currently 1,500 students are enrolled which is a decrease of 72 from last year's figure. Bryant reported on a recent meeting held with all the R-School Administrators and they will continue to meet on a quarterly basis, and he reported that R-80 continues to be pro-active with current safety procedures at the schools in light of recent happenings in schools. He said that school administrators along with local law enforcement officers and fire department personnel recently attended a very informative webcast regarding enhancing school safety and they have another meeting scheduled for November 2nd. Bryant stated that currently additional cameras are being installed at the Upper Elementary School and older cameras are being updating to color cameras at all buildings. Bryant wanted the community to know that the school administration makes the safety and security of the students a top priority. FFA Advisor Bob Parsons was there to ask the permission of the board to apply for a grant from NRA to purchase a launcher and trailer for clay pigeons for the FFA Shooting Sports Booster Club and that was approved. The board then heard program evaluations from Guidance and Counseling, and Counselor Mike Lilliker reported that the district would receive $15,000 from the Montgomery Academic Opportunity Program Scholarship. This is an increase from the $10,000 received last year that was distributed to 7 students. Bryant the presented the MAP results and discussed the 4th Cycle MSIP program. The district will have a targeted review this year from DESE and will look at the low scoring areas such as the Jr. High math curriculum. The board then heard a program evaluation on Instructional Effectiveness as several teachers presented examples of their daily lesson plans and discussed how this new program, established by Assistant Superintendent Cindy Rumpf, has improved the way that teachers in all grades can work together to ensure that students are prepared to advance grades. Bryant and the entire board commended the teaching staff of the district for all the hard work and dedication that they provide to the children of our community. The board approved the Newton summer school contract for this year. The board accepted the resignation of Emogene Welch, lower elementary food service and board member Mark Nash as he is moving out of the district and must resign his position on the board. Bryant thanked Mark for his service to the district and acknowledged that he regretted seeing him leave the Board. Bryant said that anyone wishing to fill the vacant term of Nash must submit a letter within two weeks to the Superintendent's office that state your qualifications and why you would like to serve on the Board. The appointed person would serve until the next election in April 2007. At the November board meeting, the board will review all letters and determine whom they will interview and appoint at the December meeting. The board then went into closed session where they employed Sharon Hogan and Ruth Warren for food service and Derwin McGownd as 6th grade teacher. The board acknowledged receipt of two bids for the upper elementary classroom addition project. The board received bids from Hogan Construction from Rolla for $985,100 and Gentry Construction from Houston for $942,619. The board will determine who receives the contract at a later meeting date. The meeting was then adjourned.

Billy Jackson scored three touchdowns and three 2-point conversions, and Matt Whitaker scored twice and rushed for 161 yards as the Salem Tigers blasted the Logan-Rogersville Wildcats, 44-7. Salem collected 474 yards of offense in the game and improved their record to 7-1 overall and 1-0 in district play. They will host Buffalo Friday night.

Petr Cajanek scored the game-winning goal in the third period as St. Louis edged Chicago, 4-3, at the United Center Saturday night. Lee Stempniak had two goals and an assist for the Blues, who ended a brief two-game losing skid and picked up their first road victory of the season. Doug Weight added two assists, while goaltender Curtis Sanford finished with 24 saves. The Blues will be off until Saturday.

Missouri quarterback Chase Daniel completed 24- of-31 passes for 262 yards and four touchdowns to lead the 24th-ranked Tigers to a 41-21 victory over Kansas State. Missouri is now 7-1 this year and 3-1 in the Big 12. Kansas State is 4-4 overall and 1-3 in the conference. Missouri scored 34 unanswered points after Kansas State posted its first touchdown in the first quarter on a fumble recovery. The Tigers face Oklahoma on Saturday.

Kenny Rogers continued to amaze with his success this postseason, holding the Cardinals to two hits over eight shutout innings, as the Detroit Tigers held off St. Louis, 3-1, in Game 2 of the World Series. Jim Edmonds doubled in the lone St. Louis run in the ninth inning. Jeff Weaver was lifted after allowing nine hits and three runs through five innings to suffer the loss. The series now shifts to St. Louis for Game 3 on Tuesday night at 7:00 on KSMO. Nate Robertson will pitch for Detroit against Chris Carpenter.
