The City of Salem and Dent County residents are invited to attend the second of six work session meetings designed to create a strategic plan that will help shape the future direction of their community on Tuesday, October 23rd at 6:00. Attendees of the meeting will have the opportunity to help write the community’s vision statement. With a vision statement in place, residents attending the meeting will then complete a Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threats (SWOT) plan. The plan will identify those four elements as they relate to Salem and Dent County, giving residents a better sense of specific goals they may have for the community and which goals are feasible. Once the SWOT plan is complete, attendees of the October 23rd meeting will also begin shaping the action plan portion of the strategic planning process. According to Connie Willman of the MRPC, the action plan will identify not only the needs of the community, but the resources available to help meet those needs. The Dent County and Salem strategic plan was initially created in 1994 as a means to identify the goals and objectives of the city and county–items and issues residents and leaders wish to address–and provide schedules and funding options to accomplish those goals. It was last updated in 1997. The City of Salem sponsored the effort and contracted with MRPC to help lead the work sessions and update the plan. Citizens of rural Dent County have also been invited to participate in the process, as Salem city leaders recognize that the direction taken by the city has an impact on the entire county and that county residents are often involved with projects within Salem.
