An accident occurred at 3:55 Friday afternoon in Dent County on Dent County Road 233 at Dent County Road 232. According to the highway patrol report, a 2002 Ford Ranger driven by 20-year old Andrew Karr of Salem, crossed over the centerline into the path of a 1998 Bluebird Bus driven by 47-year old James Major of Salem. An occupant, 17-year old Travis Taylor of Salem, suffered moderate injuries and was transported by Salem Ambulance to Salem Memorial District Hospital. Andrew Karr and James Majors were both wearing seat restraints at the time of the accident, while Travis Taylor was not. The Ford Ranger was totaled and removed from the scene by Whitaker’s Towing of Salem. The Bluebird Bus sustained minor damages and was removed from the scene by Whitaker’s Towing of Salem.
The Salem Memorial District Hospital Board of Directors held their regular monthly meeting at the hospital library Thursday evening. John Cooper of BK & D gave the audit report and said that the hospital had a very good year with an increase in cash on hand of about $500,000 reflecting about 78 days the hospital could operate with the cash they had available. He said that the accounts receivable was down about $100,000 which reflected quicker payments and helped in reducing the days in account receivable from 59 last year to 50 this year. He said that the current ratio was about 3.81 to 1 and most rural hospitals are usually about 1.98 to 1. Cooper said that the capital assets increased to just over five million dollars with total assets being $10,249,243 which is about $850,000 more than last year. He said that the hospital debt load was only about 11% against assets while most rural hospitals are closer to 31%. Cooper went to say that the hospital is expanding while charging some of the lowest rates around as the gross revenue per acute care patient discharge was $4,666 and that is less than half the industry norm, while at the same time, the hospital’s expenses per acute care patient discharged was only $2,696 which is also less than half the industry norm. Overall, he said that hospital is in very good financial position. Hospital Administrator Dennis Pryor reported that the summary of operations for the month of September showed an excess of expenses over revenues of $6,134 for the month. There is currently $1.6 million in CD’s. Carol Lacy gave the director of nursing report for the month and there were 818 emergency room visits, 217 ambulance runs, 21 surgeries, 351 clinical visits, 253 home health visits, 7,733 lab tests, 23 nuclear med scans, 1,134 radiological procedures, 27 MRI scans, 360 CT Scans, 99 dialysis procedures visits and there were 213 rehabs. Pryor then gave the Hospital Auxiliary report. The Auxiliary is working on upcoming fundraisers including their cookbook which is now available for $8.00, Books are Fun on November 9th and the Holiday Home Tour on December 2nd. Pryor reported that on Tuesday, KSMO Radio will air a call in show featuring the administrator as he will be discussing what happened at the meeting starting at 8:30 in the morning. Pryor reported on Physician’s Office Building 3 and that the walls have been poured and the forms will be coming down allowing the plumbers to get the plumbing installed and get things ready to lay the floor. He also reported that Dr. Shukla would retire on December 31st of this year. In the budgeted equipment purchases, the pharmacy purchased a paper shredder for $220 from UBS, the information systems bought a laptop from PC Connection for $1,343 and the Long Term Care unit purchased 18 mattresses for $3,998. In the unbudgeted purchases, accounts payable bought a printer for $110 from Quill, the Emergency Room needed a new and larger linen cart from Burrows Company for $335, the acute care receptionist area received two monitors for a total cost of $386, and the acute care area received two desktop units for $1,286. The board then approved the sale of the Kodak XPX machine from the radiology department to the Dent County Vet Clinic for $1,105. The board then went into closed session.
The Dent County Sheriff’s Department released their reported involving mailbox damage. On October 8th and 9th, the department received several reports of mailbox damage. There were reports of two damaged mailboxes on Dent County Road 237, three damaged mailboxes on Highway C, three damaged boxes on Highway DD, four reports of damaged mailboxes on Dent County Road 421 and three damaged mailboxes that appeared to have been run over on Dent County Road 221. While investigating the reports of damaged mailboxes, information was received from the night shift concerning a vehicle at the intersection of Highway 32 and Highway C. On October 9th at 12:30 in the morning, the vehicle was observed weaving. The vehicle and subjects having been identified led to the arrest of a 17-year old male. A 19-year old male was issued summons for property damage in the 2nd degree.

Cody Wofford’s one-yard touchdown run following a C.J. Smith interception proved to be the difference as Salem rallied for two 4th quarter touchdowns to beat Logan-Rogersville, 18-14. Justin Davis and Max Ball also scored for Salem who evened their record at 4-4 and will travel to Buffalo on Friday.
The Salem Lady Volleyball Tigers are seeded third in districts and will face Ava this afternoon at 4:00 at Marshfield. If Salem wins the first game, they would face Logan-Rogersville in the semi-final at 7:00 tonight. You can hear the contests on KSMO Radio and online at www.ksmoradio.com.
Backup tailback Jimmy Jackson ran for three touchdowns, as the 15th-ranked Missouri Tigers pounded the 22nd-ranked Texas Tech Red Raiders, 41-10, in a Big 12 Conference clash. Chase Daniel completed 14-of-19 passes for 210 yards with a score and an interception for Missouri, now 6-1. Derrick Washington rushed for 66 yards on nine carries, and Jeremy Maclin caught a pair of passes for 64 yards and a TD.
Eric Belanger had a goal and an assist, including the go-ahead score, as the Minnesota Wild rode a great goaltending performance from Josh Harding on their way to a 3-1 victory over the St. Louis Blues. Brent Burns and Pavol Demitra also scored for Minnesota.
Matt Hasselbeck threw for 195 yards on 18-of-35 passing with two touchdowns to lead Seattle past St. Louis, 33-6, at Qwest Field to keep the Rams winless at 0-7. Torry Holt had eight catches for 82 yards in defeat.
Larry Johnson rushed 24 times for 112 yards and a score, and the Kansas City Chiefs held on for a 12-10 win over the Oakland Raiders. Damon Huard went 16-of-31 for 177 yards and an interception, and Dwayne Bowe had three catches for 84 yards for the Chiefs (4-3), who won for the third time in four weeks.

Funeral services for James William Barred of Salem, age 82, will be held Wednesday morning at 11:00 at the Wilson Mortuary Chapel in Salem. Visitation will be held from 6:00 to 8:00 Tuesday evening. Interment will be in the Jadwin Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society.
