The Salem R-80 Board of Education held their October meeting Thursday evening. Superintendent Steve Carvajal gave an update on the track that is nearly complete. Carvajal stated that a grand opening ceremony was being planned for the first or second week in November. Work on the new serving line has been finished, the third of the roof that had to be replaced passed inspections and dirt work, plumbing and electric have been done on the new storage building and is now ready for the footings and rebar with the walls going up in about three to four weeks. Also noted was an upgrade to the electric with included a switch gear to carry the current load as well as any new additions and the switch gear on the electric is safer by making it so that is can be shut down if necessary to different areas of the school. Board members Dustin Howard and Steve Morton along with Bernie Sirois discussed the MSBA/MASA annual conference and how very informational and worthwhile the information obtained was. In reports, the Salem Sr. High School had three students that took the MO Options test. Congratulations went to the Salem Lady Softball team for another successful season with back-to-back SCA wins and the Salem High School Band took 1^st place at the Springfield competition. It was also noted that the Salem High School ended the 1^st quarter with a 95.88% attendance rate, the best in nine years. At the Salem Jr. High the Scholastic Book Fair was a huge success with over $1,200 in books being purchased of which they will receive a 40% profit and with that money, additional books for the classroom will be purchased. The Salem Upper Elementary 6^th grade choir kicked off the Dent County Relay for Life event by singing The Star Spangled Banner and the Color Run was a huge success. At the William Lynch Elementary they had 81 students with perfect attendance for the 1^st quarter. The Board then approved the bid of $1,000 from Randy Wisdom for the 1,000-gallon diesel tank. The Board then adjourned and voted to go into closed session for the purpose of discussing personnel.

The City of Salem Board of Alderman will conduct their meeting tonight at the City Hall Council Chambers located at 202 North Washington beginning at 7:00 pm. After approval of the agenda in bids, the city requested bids for 4,500 gallons of LL100 aviation fuel, bids for the purchase of a new Ford F450 truck with a 9-foot steel dump bed and bids for the purchase of a new 11-foot steel dump bed. City Administrator Clayton Lucas will present the bids that were received. In unfinished business, at the last meeting, the Board tabled any decision on the Salem T.C.R.C. until the full Board could be present. Resolution #11-2013 will be presented again for Board approval. Lucas will update the Board on city happenings and Mayor Gary Brown will then give his report. During the introduction and reading of bills and resolutions, Bill #3274, an ordinance required in order for the city to receive grants funds for the airport pavement maintenance and Bill #3275, an ordinance required to rezone 900 South MacArthur that was approved by the Planning & Zoning Board of Commissioners and the Board of Alderman at the last meeting, will both be presented for the Board’s approval. In new and miscellaneous business, Alderman Nash and Alderman Giacomelli wish to discuss a problem of parking along South Washington and South Jackson Streets in Salem and there will be a discussion of the employee’s health insurance plan. The meeting of the Alderman is open to the public.

An accident occurred at 9:45 Friday morning on Highway 32 about three miles west of Salem. According to the highway patrol report, 84-year old Billy Friend of Salem was driving a 2009 Chevrolet pickup west when he made a left turn into the path of a 1999 Chevrolet pickup driven by 44-year old Eddie Wofford of Salem. Friend suffered minor injuries but refused treatment at the scene. They were both wearing a seat restraint at the time of the accident. The 2009 Chevrolet sustained moderate damage and was removed from the scene by Whitaker’s Towing. The 1999 Chevrolet sustained moderate damage but was driven from the scene.

An accident occurred at 3:41 Saturday afternoon in Phelps County on eastbound Interstate 44 at the 169.4-mile marker. According to the highway patrol report, 19-year old Random Bailey of Rolla was driving a 2002 Ford Taurus when she changed lanes and struck a 2011 Kenworth Tractor driven by 54-year old Terry Strickland of Claremore, Oklahoma. The Ford then traveled off the left side of the roadway, struck the cable median barrier, returned to the roadway, and was struck on the right side by the Kenworth again. Bailey and an occupant in the Ford, 29-year old Dustin Hanson of Licking, suffered minor injuries and were taken to the Phelps County Regional Medical Center. The other occupant in the Ford, 23-year old Danielle Chambers of Licking, suffered serious injuries and was flown by Mercy Life Line to the University Hospital in Columbia. Strickland was the only one wearing a seat restraint at the time of the accident.
