The Dent County Commissioners held their quarterly nightly meeting Monday night at the Judicial Building with just a hand full of people in attendance. Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles reported that the year-to-date sales tax revenue is up $2,798; the year-to-date General Revenue expenses are down $91,589 and that the total year-to-date General Revenue is down $734 from 2009. Skiles said that the law enforcement sales tax was up $49,905 and law enforcement expenses were down $27,900. Skiles also reported that the state reimbursement was down about half at $21,606 compared to $40,760 for 2009. He then reported that the county had signed a lease/purchase agreement with the Bank of Salem for a used 2007 Tahoe 4X4 for $21,500 that was equipped for law enforcement. Skiles also reported that revenue in the Assessor's Office was down $4,800, but expenses were also down $8,270. For the Road and Bridge Department, District One Commissioner Dennis Purcell reported that the budget is within the parameters and the work continued on the expansion of the building for the Road and Bridge Department, on the additions and office space. The Road and Bridge Department maintains all the SEMA and FEMA records and they are kept for quite some time thus needing the additional storage space. The new building would also have a work area, lunchroom, restroom and a space for storage of equipment such as tires, oil, and other items used by the department. District Two Commissioner Gary Larson reported that all the FEMA related jobs were finished this month including the original work and those areas that were redone due to weather related issues. Larson then reported that the Road and Bridge Department did spend between $65 to $70 thousand dollars more this year on white rock due to the heavy spring rains as Dent County maintains over 600 miles of graveled roads. Larson also said that creek gravel is being stock piled if needed. The meeting was then adjourned.

Drivers are reminded to watch for deer, which are more active this time of year, especially during evening and nighttime hours. Deer behavioral changes are occurring due to mating season, which may cause an increase in roadway crossings. Hunting and crop harvesting may result in these animals being places they aren’t usually seen. When deer are seen, slow down and proceed with caution! Deer often travel in groups--stay on guard after a close call or when you see one deer. Natural features also affect deer movement. In areas where there are streams or wooded corridors surrounded by farmland, look for more deer to cross roadways. In 2009, 28 percent of the traffic crashes involving deer happened in urban areas. Last year, Missouri had 3,676 traffic crashes where deer-vehicle strikes occurred. One deer strike occurred every 2.4 hours in the state. In these crashes, five people were killed and 333 injured. The majority of deer strike crashes occur from October through December each year, with the largest number taking place in November. The majority of deer strikes occur from 5:00 p.m. through 6:59 a.m. The Missouri State Highway Patrol reminds drivers that an attempt to avoid striking a deer could result in a more serious crash involving oncoming traffic. Try to remain calm. Panicking and overreacting usually lead to more serious traffic crashes. Please stay alert, and make sure you and the occupants of your vehicle buckle up!
