At the Community Betterment Awards Banquet in Jefferson City last night, Salem took fifth place in Category 4 behind Lamar, Eldon, Higginsville and Brookfield who took first place. Houston did take first place in Category 3 from the area. Also at the banquet, Luke Heithold was presented a Youth Leadership Award and his mother, Penny Heithold, accepted the award for Luke. KSMO Radio Station owner Stan Podorski was in attendance at the banquet and accepted an Adult Leadership Award for his volunteer community efforts over the last 24 years. Congratulations to Luke and Stan!

The Dent County Commissioners met for their regular meeting Monday morning at the Dent County Courthouse. In the road report, District 1 Commissioner Bobby Simpson stated that grading would be done between Routes B and N on Dent County roads 5390 and 5400. He also said grading would be done on Dent County roads 6580 and 4210. A backhoe would be used on Dent County Road 430 to install a new culvert, and material will be added to that road and Dent County Road 6570. Simpson also reported that a dump truck is in the shop for maintenance. District 2 Commissioner J.J. Tune said grading would be done on Dent County roads 3180, 3183, 2050 and 2060. He said a road pipe would be installed on Dent County Road 3030, and material would be added to that road as well as Dent County Road 2050. Dent County Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles attended a Region I Homeland Security Interoperations Committee meeting last Thursday. The Committee has decided to purchase handheld communication radios for emergency management with the Dent County Fire Protection District receiving 8 radios, the Jadwin Fire District would get three radios, and the Montauk Fire District would receive two radios. He said the allocation for 2009 would be about $305,000, and the committee is looking at purchasing satellite phone units for each county. They would most likely be placed with the Emergency Management Director, but the final decision would be up to the county commissions. Dent County Clerk Angie Curley reported that 550 absentee ballots have been requested. The final day to request a mail out ballot will be October 29th and absentee voting will continue until November 3rd at the Dent County Clerk’s office. The office will also be open on Saturday, November 1st from 8 am until noon for absentee voters.  She also said that the voting equipment would be tested this morning at 9:00 am.  The next Dent County Commission meeting will be Thursday morning at 9:00 AM at the courthouse and it is open to the public.

The City of Salem Board of Alderman will conduct their regular meeting tonight at the City Hall Council Chambers beginning at 7:00 pm. In unfinished business, City Attorney Nanci Wisdom will report on her findings on the Ameren UE contract with the City where it states that they will maintain a fee office in Salem. At the last Board meeting, Alderman McDaniel’s requested the City’s insurance representative be present to discuss the damages to the electronic sign at the Crossroads and Mike Elliott will be present to answer any questions the Board has. And also at the last meeting, Alderman Riley asked the city attorney to find out about the home on Roberts Street and why it is not annexed into the city and if there is something the city can do to help. During reports, Alderman Kenneth Nash, Bill Riley and Jim Jackson would like to discuss miscellaneous items involving the City of Salem along with Jim McDaniels. McDaniels also wants an update of the storm damages, an update on Insituform, unfinished jobs around the City and communication radios. Mayor Gary Brown will also give his comments items involving the City of Salem. During the reading of bills, Bill #3142 an ordinance annexing certain adjacent territory into the City of Salem including; the R-80 administrative offices and property owned by John and Johanna Wegmann, will be presented. Also, Bill #3-2008 a resolution adopting an identity theft prevention program for the City of Salem, and Bill #4-2008 a resolution adopting a cell phone policy for the City of Salem, will also be presented. In new business, Halloween Hours are set for 6:00 to 8:00 pm. After approval of the bills presented by City Clerk Mary Happel, the Board may then vote to go into closed session for the purpose of discussing personnel, real estate and pending litigation. The regular meeting of the City of Salem Board of Alderman is open to the public.

The Salem Police Department released their reports involving assault, property damage and a prowler. On October 17th at 2:45 in the afternoon, an officer was dispatched to the 700 block of North Pershing in reference to an assault. The investigation of the report led to the arrest of a 19-year old Salem woman for assault. She was released on a summons to appear in court. On October 18th at 12:02 in the morning, an officer was detailed to the 300 block of East 2nd Street in reference to individuals banging on doors. The investigation of the report led to the arrest of an 18-year old Salem man for damage to private property. He was issued a summons to appear in court and released.  On October 19th at 7:00 in the evening, an officer was sent to the 700 block of West 1st Street in reference to a prowler. The investigation of the report revealed an unknown subject had damaged a garage door by putting a hole in the door. Anyone with any information regarding these incidents, which are still under investigation, is asked to please contact the Salem Police Department at 729-4242.

The Salem Lady Volleyball Tigers will be at Ava tonight for their final regular season match. The JV will start things out at 6:00 with the varsity contest to follow.

St. Louis Rams running back Steven Jackson has a slight quadriceps strain and will likely not miss the team's game next Sunday against New England. Jackson suffered the injury in the fourth quarter of Sunday's 34-14 win over Dallas, and an MRI exam on Monday provided the diagnosis. Jackson ran for 160 yards and three touchdowns in the win. Rams head coach Jim Haslett said Jackson will be limited in practice this week but fine for the Patriots game.

Funeral services for Stella Mae Flett of Salem, age 86, will be held Wednesday at 1:00 at the Dent County Memorial Chapel. Visitation will be tonight from 6:00 to 8:00. Interment will be in the Cedar Grove Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Salem Care Center.

A family Graveside Memorial service for Amanda Jane Covert of Salem, age 26, will be held Thursday at 2:00 at the Dry Fork Cemetery. All arrangements are under the direction of the Wilson Mortuary Chapel of Salem. 

Funeral services for Fred Amon Ziegler of Rolla, age 85, will be held Friday at 1:00 at the James & Gahr Mortuary in Rolla. Visitation will be Thursday from 5:00 to 8:00. Interment will be in the Ozark Memorial Garden in Rolla. Memorials are suggested to the American Cancer Society or Little Prairie Bible Camp.

Funeral service for Jeffrey W. Kyle of Houston, age 54, will be held at a later date. All arrangements are under the direction of the James & Gahr Mortuary of Salem.
