The City of Salem Board of Aldermen will hold a special meeting tonight at 6:00 at the Salem TCRC at 1200 West Rolla Road to hold a workshop on a Strategic Plan before going into closed session to discuss personnel and litigation. After the closed session, the board may possibly discuss the strategic plan for the city further before adjourning. The special meeting to hold a workshop on the Strategic Plan, called by Mayor Gary Brown, is open to the public.

The Doe Run Company’s Sweetwater Mine and Mill, part of the company’s Southeast Missouri Mining and Milling Division (SEMO), has earned the highly coveted Sentinels of Safety award for outstanding safety performance in the Large Underground Metal Mine category. Sweetwater Mine and Mill is a seven-time winner of the award, having received the honor in 1971, 1972, 1988, 1993, 1999, and 2002. Doe Run and its predecessor companies have now won the Sentinels if Safety award 25 times since 1971. The company points to two specific practices that have helped the company continue improving safety rates. Doe Run rolled out Behavior Based Safety (BBS) at its SEMO operations in 2010. The program recognizes employees for safe behaviors before causing issues. Doe Run also employs MSHA’s program, SLAM (Stop, Look, Analyze and Manage), which encourages employees to assess and analyze safety risks before beginning tasks. Through these and other programs, including annual safety training, Doe Run decreased incident rates company-wide by 23 percent in 2010. The Salem Police Department released their reports of thefts and a burglary. On Thursday, October 13^th at 1:53 in the afternoon, an officer was dispatched to a residence in the 1000 block of South Water Street in reference to a burglary. The investigation revealed that a person or persons unknown entered a residence and caused $165 in property damage. At 3:00 that same afternoon, an officer was contacted at the police station in reference to a theft. The investigation revealed that a person or persons unknown took a chainsaw valued at $500 from the bed of a truck parked in the 800 block of East First Street. At 4:40 early that evening, a vehicle was stopped for a traffic violation. The investigation of the stop led to the arrest of a 26-year old female of Salem for possession of drug paraphernalia and a 26-year old male of Salem for possession of a synthetic narcotic. The female was released with a summons to appear in court and the male was released pending the application for a warrant. On Friday, October 15^th at 12:15 in the afternoon, an officer was dispatched to the Casey’s General Store in reference to a theft of fuel. The investigation revealed that an older male driving a green Dodge Caravan pumped $37.67 in fuel and left without paying. Anyone with information about the burglary or the thefts, which are still under investigation, is asked to contact the Salem Police Department at 729-4242.

On Tuesday, October 25^th at 7:00 p.m., the Ozark Natural & Cultural Resource Center and Bonebrake Center of Nature & History will host a screening of a new film called Green Fire: Aldo Leopold and a Land Ethic for Our Time the first full-length, high definition documentary film ever made about legendary conservationist Aldo Leopold. The film explores Aldo Leopold’s life in the early part of the twentieth century and the many ways his land ethic idea continues to be applied all over the world today. The event also celebrates the centennial of the Weeks Act, a landmark environmental law passed in 1911 that led to the creation of nearly 20 million acres of national forest system lands in the eastern United States.  The short documentary film, Legacy of the Weeks Act, will open the evening’s film presentation. The event is a fundraiser for Bonebrake Center of Nature & History and the Ozark Natural & Cultural Resource Center. Your $5 admission will support programs and events at these two local non-profit organizations. The film will be shown at the Ozark Natural & Cultural Resource Center on Highway 19 south.

The City of Steelville in Crawford County has had its sewage treatment plant upgraded to meet state requirements, thanks to grants totaling some $171,000. The city was awarded a $76,125 grant through the Delta Regional Authority (DRA) for improvements to its wastewater system. The Meramec Regional Planning Commission (MRPC) prepared the DRA application and served as grant administrator. The city also received a Missouri Department of Natural Resources Rural Sewer Grant of $95,209 for the project. The total project cost was $226,968.35, which included $55,634.35 from the City of Steelville. The combined DRA and DNR funding allowed the city to upgrade the sewage treatment plant to be compliant with DNR effluent discharge standards. The treatment plant serves Steelville’s 1,429 residents. The project featured the installation and construction of an ultraviolet disinfection system. The new system allowed the effluent of the treatment plant to be disinfected through ultraviolet light before being discharged into Whittenburg Creek. Disinfection of the effluent is required in order to meet DNR’s requirements and for the city to keep its Missouri State Operating Permit. The City of Steelville worked with Missouri Engineering Company of Rolla on the project plans. Construction for the project began in the fall of 2010 and was completed in the spring of 2011.

The Salem Football Tigers will host the St. James Tigers tonight at 7:00 in their final regular season home game of the year. It will be Senior Night as the players and their parents will be honored prior to the game. Since the Cardinals are in the World Series and will be playing Game 2 at the same time of the football game, KSMO must play the game back on delayed basis. The game will be broadcast on KSMO Radio and online at ksmoradio.com Friday afternoon starting at 3:00 starting with Tiger Talk and Coach Bill Schuchardt.

Behind a go-ahead, pinch-hit single by Allen Craig in the sixth and another solid performance by their bullpen, St. Louis earned a 3-2 victory over the Texas Rangers in Game One of the World Series. Chris Carpenter lasted six frames and allowed five hits and two runs, while five relievers combined for three shutout innings. Game two will see Jaime Garcia go against Colby Lewis tonight. Funeral services for Mackenzie Brook Miller age 17 and Adam Scott Miller age 14, of Salem will be held Saturday at 11:00 at the New Harmony Church. Visitation will be Friday from 3:00 to 8:00 at New Harmony Church. Interment will be in the Cedar Grove Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the family. A Memorial Fund for Mackenzie and Adam Miller has been set up at Progressive Ozark Bank. All arrangements are under the direction of the Wilson Mortuary of Salem.

Glenn Roy Hedrick age 63, of Salem passed away October 19^th. No services will be held. All arrangements are under the direction of the Wilson Mortuary Chapel in Salem.
