At the Missouri Community Betterment Awards Banquet held Monday night in Jefferson City, Salem came in 2nd behind in Eldon in Category 5 while the Salem Youth took 1st place in the category. Last year, Salem placed 5th in the competition. Also honored yesterday were Hannah Kettner as she was awarded the Missouri Community Betterment Youth Leadership Award from Salem, and Brad Nash who was awarded the Missouri Community Betterment Adult Leadership Award from Salem. The Salem Area Community Betterment Association sends out a special thanks to award nominee application coordinator Liz Gruendel for helping with the nominee applications, project book chair Sarah Hultine and the rest of the committee for helping with the project reports included in this year’s book, and to Judy Apperson for helping with transportation for the youth attendees this year.

The Dent County Commissioners met for their regular meeting Monday morning at the Dent County Courthouse. In the road report, District One Commissioner Dennis Purcell stated that grading was going to be done on Dent County Roads 5480, 6080 and 6083, while rock would be added and grading will be done to Dent County Road 4180. He also said that brush would be cut on Dent County Road 6350. District Two Commissioner Gary Larson reported that grading was going to be done on Dent County Roads 3120, 3180, 4290 and 4300, while rock would be added and grading will be done on Dent County Road 2050. Larson reported that the districts would be hauling gravel from the creeks to start stock piling for the winter months. Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles said that he attended the Region I Homeland Security Oversight Committee’s open demonstration last Thursday where they held an exhibition of the some of the equipment bought with HSOC grant funds, then attended the meeting and said that the grant for the stand-by generator for the Red Cross Shelter in Salem would be awarded this week. He said he would be attending a Department of Natural Resources Energize Missouri Communities meeting on Wednesday in Springfield where they have set aside 12 million dollars in energy efficiency and Conservation block grant funding for cities and counties. Applications for this program will be accepted in November and Skiles will learn at the meeting what projects or activities are eligible as well as the purpose and goals of the program. The next meeting of the Dent County Commissioners will be Thursday morning at 9:00 at the courthouse and the meeting is open to the public.

The Salem Police Department released their reports involving assault, theft, egged vehicles, and stalking. On Monday, October 12th at 9:28 a.m. an officer was contacted at the station in reference to an assault. The report revealed a male had assaulted a 65-year old Salem male at McDonalds Restaurant. On Wednesday, October 14th at 5:00 p.m. an officer was contacted at the station in reference to a theft in the 300 block of North Russell. The report revealed that a person or persons unknown took a Poulan chainsaw valued at $80 from the yard of a residence. At 6:50 that same morning, an officer was contacted in reference to vehicles that had been egged. The report revealed an 18-year old Salem female had threw eggs on two vehicles. Further investigation led to her arrest and she was issued a summons to appear in court and released. That evening at 7:00 pm, an officer was contacted at the station in reference to stalking. The report led to the arrest of a 36-year-old Salem male for stalking. He was issued a summons to appear in court and released. On Thursday, October 15th at 10:05 a.m. an officer was detailed to Sub-Way restaurant in reference to property damage.  The report revealed that a person or persons unknown disconnected power to a freezer and scattered trash behind the building. The damage is valued at $200. At 4:25 that afternoon an officer was contacted at the station in reference to a theft. The report revealed that a person or persons unknown took a purse valued $150.00 from a shopping cart at Wal-Mart. Anyone with any information regarding the assault, theft, or property damage reports, which are still under investigation, is asked to please contact the Salem Police Department by calling 729-4242.

An accident occurred at 2:45 Saturday afternoon in Laclede County on Highway 5 about one hundred yards south of Lebanon. According to the highway patrol report, 34-year old Jason McElfresh of Salem was driving a 2001 Ford Explorer and fell asleep at the wheel. He then traveled off the right side of the roadway, overcorrected, overturned, and came to rest on its side. McElfresh suffered minor injuries and refused treatment at the scene. He was wearing a seat restraint at the time of the accident. The Ford Explorer was totaled in the accident and removed from the scene by C and S Towing.

Ben Adams had an 88-yard interception for a touchdown, and a 10-yard run for a score, as the Salem freshmen and sophomores combined for a 22-20 victory over the Owensville freshmen and sophomores. J.R. Rictor also scored for Salem and threw for a key 2-point conversion to Tyler Wofford which proved to be the difference. Adams finished with three interceptions in the game.

The Salem Lady Volleyball Tigers will host Ava tonight in the final regular season game this year and it will be Senior night. The JV will start play at 6:00 and the varsity game will follow after the seniors and their parents are honored. You can hear the match tonight on KSMO radio and online at www.ksmoradio.com

The St. Louis Blues will be at Pittsburgh tonight to face the Penguins. KSMO will start the game at 6:00, interrupt the game for the Salem Lady Volleyball Tiger games, then play the third period back on a taped delayed basis after the conclusion of the volleyball match.

Funeral services for Lorraine A Snelson of Morgans Point Resort, Texas formerly of Rolla, age 90, will be held this morning at 11:00 at the James & Gahr Mortuary in Rolla. Visitation will be 10:00 until time of service. Interment will be in the Thomas Fairview Cemetery in Rolla. Memorials are suggested to Hospice.

Funeral services for Mary Magglena Land of Rolla, age 84, will be held this morning at 11:00 at the Wilson Mortuary Chapel in Salem. Interment will be in the Cedar Grove cemetery. Memorials may be made to the American Heart or Diabetes Association.

A memorial service for Everett Boulch of Salem, age 77, will be held Wednesday morning at 11:00 at the Salem Freewill Baptist Church with Charles Bacon, Jr. officiating. All arrangements are under the direction of the James and Gahr Mortuary in Salem.

Funeral services for Junior F. Blake of Salem, age 80, will be held Thursday morning at 11:00 at the James & Gahr Mortuary in Salem. Visitation will be Wednesday from 6:00 to 8:00. Interment will be in the Empire Cemetery with Full Military Honors. Memorials are suggested to the Fairview Church in Timber.

Interment for Terry L. Blankenship of Salem, age 47, will be held at a later date in the New Hope Cemetery. All the arrangements are under the direction of the Dent County Memorial Chapel.
