The Salem R-80 Board of Education held their regular monthly meeting Thursday evening. Due to missing members at the meeting, the pictures for the yearbook were postponed until the November meeting. After approval of the consent agenda, the Board saw several demonstrations about the CIA-cross-curricular instruction and higher order thinking skills and approved the program. Superintendent Steve Bryant then stated that the September membership count for this year is 1,539, up 32 from last year’s count of 1,507. Cindy Rumpf reported that at the South Central Association professional development day held September 22nd, 29 teachers from Salem were presenters at the conference and were each given a $50 gift card for Wal-Mart. Bryant then stated that there will be a Town Hall meeting regarding the bond issue that will be on the November ballot, on Thursday, October 30th beginning at 5:30 pm in the Senior High Library. Bryant also wanted to make it clear that the Proposition "A" issue that will be on the November ballot is not an educational issue, but in fact, a gaming issue. During the PTO update, is was noted that "McTeacher" night at McDonald's was a huge success and more are being planned with other restaurants in Salem. There were program evaluations on guidance and counseling and how the counselors are working at each school as well as together to further promote better attendance, achievement, respect, discipline and attitudes for the students. The instructional effectiveness program evaluation was also touched on concerning the (ARP)-annual performance report, and the (AYP)-annual yearly reports of the district and more will be talked about in the months to come on how to better the scores. The Title 1 Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA) resolution goes along with the No Child Left Behind program. Bryant stated that R-80 is working on a resolution tool to send to congressman in Washington DC in dealing with realistic goals for the program and the resolution was adopted by the Board. The 403(b) plan is a tax shelter for money for retirement. Forest T. Jones and Company will be the administrator for the plan for the district, for free. Bryant did note that individuals wishing to use or currently using someone here in town for their 403(b) plan is also a good idea. The Board voted to approve the MUSIC renewal, which is an insurance pool for the districts liability, casualty, workman's comp and property insurance. The Board approved the resignations of Jerry Frillman as a bus driver and Amanda Taber as a Literacy Aid at the William Lynch Elementary. The board then went into closed session where they employed Joni Bobbit as a senior high Cheerleading Co-Sponsor; Marsha Gibson as the senior high Alternative and ISS para-professional; Paul Mansel as a bus driver; Kendra Mobray as the Upper Elementary School Nurse; and Leann Shults as a junior high secretary. The meeting was then adjourned.

The Missouri Department of Transportation (MoDOT) will perform pavement repairs on Route H, today through Wednesday, October 22^nd. Work will begin at the intersection of Highway 72 in Dent County and extend to the intersection of Highway 63 in Phelps County. Crews and equipment will be located directly on the roadway between the hours of 7:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. MoDOT will also be making repairs to the railing on the Huzzah Creek Bridge, located on Route 32 in Dent County on today and tomorrow. This work will take place between 8:00 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. each day, weather permitting. Traffic will be reduced to one lane on the bridge. Workers and equipment will be located directly on the roadway and motorists are urged to exercise caution as they pass through the work zone. The Missouri Department of Transportation MoDOT is also going to perform pavement repairs on Highway 72, today through Wednesday, October 22^nd. Work will begin at the intersection of Route B in Dent County and end at the intersection of Route A in Reynolds County. Crews and equipment will be located directly on the roadway between the hours of 7:00 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. Motorists are urged to exercise caution. A Breast Cancer Awareness Dinner will be held tonight at 6:30 at the First Baptist Church Life Center with Mary Graham as the featured speaker. Tickets are $10 each and are available at the Edward Jones office, the Salem Memorial District Hospital and at the door. This event is sponsored by the hospital auxiliary.

The Salem Football Tigers scored once in every quarter as they defeated the Owensville Dutchmen Friday night by the score of 28-7. Yousef Ibrahim, Landie Oliver, Cody Wofford and Ty Floyd all scored of the Tigers who move to 7-1 on the year, and 1-0 in district play. Salem will host Sullivan this Friday night.

Colt McCoy threw two touchdown passes and ran for two more scores, as the top-ranked Texas Longhorns bested the 11th- ranked Missouri Tigers, 56-31, in a matchup of Big 12 powers. Chase Daniel connected on 31-of-41 passes for 318 yards with two touchdowns and one interception for the Tigers (5-2, 1-2), who were beaten by Oklahoma State at home last week. Daniel also ran for a touchdown, while Chase Coffman hauled in a game-high 12 balls for 140 yards and one score.

T.J. Oshie scored the game-winner in the shootout, as St. Louis ruined the debut of Chicago head coach Joel Quenneville with a 4-3 win in a Central Division battle from the Scottrade Center. Chris Porter scored his first NHL goal for the Blues, who rallied from a two- goal third-period deficit to earn the win. Keith Tkachuk and Andy McDonald accounted for St. Louis' two late tallies. The Blues play Detroit Wednesday night.

Steven Jackson gashed the Dallas defense for 160 yards and three touchdowns as the St. Louis Rams put a 34-14 whipping on the suddenly reeling Cowboys. Marc Bulger was an efficient 14-of-19 through the air for 173 yards, with a touchdown toss to Donnie Avery for St. Louis (2-4), which has won two straight after being outscored 147-43 in four losses to open the season. The rookie Avery finished with five catches for 65 yards and his first career TD.

LenDale White and Chris Johnson led a Titans rushing attack that churned out 332 yards and four touchdowns, and Tennessee pounded the ailing Kansas City Chiefs, 34-10. Brodie Croyle left in the second quarter with a knee injury that will sideline him the rest of the year. Damon Huard then injured his thumb on a follow through and Tyler Thigpen finished the game and scored the only touchdown for the Chiefs. Kansas City is 1-5 on the year.
