The Salem Memorial District Hospital Board of Directors will hold their regular monthly Thursday evening at 6:00 at the hospital library. The board will hear the summary of operations for the month of September from Hospital Controller Stephanie Wofford as well as other statistics before Director of Nursing Carol Lacy gives her report on nursing services and ancillary services. Hospital Administrator Dennis Pryor will give the auxiliary report before updating the board on any legislative issues. Pryor will also update the board on construction work being done at the hospital as well as reviewing the in-patient and emergency room patient satisfaction survey results. In old business, the board will hear how the hospital is addressing the strategic planning goals for 2011, and the board will also discuss the annual bylaw review. After discussing purchases of new equipment, the board may go into closed session. The meeting of the Salem Memorial District Hospital Board of Directors is open to the public.

The Salem R-80 Board of Education will hold their regular monthly board meeting on Thursday starting at 5:00 at the district administrative boardroom. After the consent agenda and communications, the board will hear from Superintendent Cindy Rumpf about the September membership count and get an update on the school facilities. She will also discuss the update the board on the budget and discuss the MASA information before addressing the state assessment results. In new business, the board will discuss a new phone system for the district for the 2012-2013 school year, and also hear any resignations that may have been submitted. The board may then vote to go into closed session to discuss personnel before adjourning. The Salem R-80 Board of Education regular monthly meting is open to the public.

The Salem Police Department released their reports of a fight and shoplifting. On Monday, October 10^th at 12:10 in the afternoon, an officer was dispatched to Wal-Mart in reference to a shoplifter. The investigation of the report led to the arrest of a 39 year-old male of Salem for stealing merchandise valued at $240.75. He was issued a summons to appear in court and released. On Tuesday, October 11^th at 12:40 in the afternoon, an officer was dispatched to the Salem Senior High School in reference to a fight. The investigation revealed that a 16 year-old juvenile male of Salem had assaulted a 19 year-old male of Salem and then fled the scene. Anyone with information regarding the fight is asked to contact the Salem Police Department at 729-4242.

Come to the Montauk Mill this Saturday from 6:30 to 8:00 for “A Haunting at the Montauk Mill.” You will see bats, hear voices and see images of ghosts from the past at the old grist mill during this annual event. There will be three separate tours starting at 6:30, 7:00, and 7:30 to experience a unique night tour of the mill. You’ll hear lingering voices of Ozark Pioneers and see mysteries of the mill. White-tailed deer are on the move as autumn progresses, and that includes crossing highways. Drivers can take steps to reduce the chances of deer-vehicle accidents. Deer encounters near roads increase in late October because the cooler weather makes them more active and there is disturbance in their regular haunts as farmers harvest crops. Deer are most active during evening, dusk, and dawn hours.. Slowing down is the best defense. If a deer does dart into the road, avoid panic braking or swerving, which can cause accidents. Rural areas are not the only place where deer-vehicle strikes occur. According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, in 2010 almost one-third of the traffic crashes involving deer happened in urban areas. Motorist wanting to keep the meat, hide or antlers from a deer killed on the highway must contact a conservation agent in the county where the accident occurred and request a disposition form before taking the deer into possession.

An accident occurred at 10:00 Sunday morning in Dent County on Highway H about three miles west of Salem. According to the highway patrol report, a 2010 Kia Sedona driven by 47-year old Steven Harper of Salem struck a deer that ran into the roadway. Steven Harper and an occupant, 39-year old Serena Harper of Salem, suffered minor injuries but sought their own treatment. They were both wearing a seat restraint at the time of the accident. The Kia sustained moderate damage and was removed from the scene by Whitaker’s Towing of Salem.

The Salem Tiger home football game against St. James scheduled for Friday has been moved to Thursday night at 7:00 due to the scheduled visitation for two Salem students killed in a car accident Monday.

The Salem Lady Tiger volleyball game scheduled to be in Mountain Grove yesterday has been cancelled. The Lady Tigers got their first win of the year on Monday, as they beat Plato in three games. They won the first game 25-23, dropped the second 25-18, and then took the third game 25-17. Salem will play in the District Tournament in Union starting on Monday.

Game 1 of the 2011 World Series will pit aces Chris Carpenter and C.J. Wilson against each other tonight. The pre-game show will start things off at 6:00 and you’ll be able to hear it all on KSMO Radio.

Simon Gagne had two goals and an assist to back Jonathan Quick's first shutout of the season, as the Los Angeles Kings dominated the St. Louis Blues, 5-0, in their home opener. Blues goalie Jaroslav Halak turned aside 14-of-18 shots before being pulled in the third period. The Blues play the Carolina Hurricane Friday night.

Missouri’s senior tight end Michael Egnew has been named to the 2011 John Mackey Award Midseason Watch List.

Memorial service for Edith H. Lutzen of Rolla, age 89, will be held today at 1:00 at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Rolla. Memorials may be made to the Immanuel Lutheran School Tuition Assistance Fund. All arrangements are under the direction of the James and Gahr Mortuary in Rolla.

Funeral services for Albert Halbert of Steelville, age 84, will be held today at 2:00 at the Britton Bennett Funeral Home in Steelville. Interment will be in the Freeman Cemetery in Cherryville. Memorials may be to the Freeman Cemetery.

Funeral services for Mackenzie Brook Miller age 17 and Adam Scott Miller age 14, of Salem will be held Saturday at 11:00 at the New Harmony Church. Visitation will be Friday from 3:00 to 8:00 at New Harmony Church. Interment will be in the Cedar Grove Cemetery. A Memorial Fund for Mackenzie and Adam Miller has been set up at Progressive Ozark Bank. All arrangements are under the direction of the Wilson Mortuary of Salem.
