The Salem R-80 Board of Education held their monthly meeting Thursday evening at the district administrative offices. At the meeting, the board heard the audit report from CPA Matt James for the last fiscal year. His report showed that the district lost $64,208 in net assets for the year with the cost of programs being $12,547,941. The total amount of revenue that the district received was $12,483,733. He said that the district did well in food service as that area actually showed a profit of $28,224.58. He did make mention that the general fund balance was down over $784,000 while the capital improvement fund increased. Even though the district still has a good general fund balance, the declining trend will put stress on the district if it continues. He said that the long-term debt of the district is $687,618 with $162,618 of that coming from new bus leases and the remainder is to pay off the bonds. James did say that he found no material problems with the audit and applauded the administration on their efforts to separate duties where possible. In the Superintendent’s report, Steve Bryant said that the membership count decreased 55 from last year going from 1534 students to 1479. Of that amount, there were 30 less non-resident students. Bryant stated that the roofing at the high school has been completed even though there are a few issues with some of the metal work that he will address. He did say that the storm damage repair to the junior high roof has not yet started due to the rains, but when it does, it should take about a month. He said that the district is also considering a grant from the Missouri Department of Conservation to provide heat for the buildings from a wood-burning boiler, as two grants will be awarded in the region. He is not sure that this will work effectively for the Salem campus and will only apply for the grant if the architects think it is a viable measure. The board then reviewed the Instructional Inventory Practices process and how the Salem district is now data driven with assessments captured four times a year that are then analyzed with vertical team meetings. This method has been shown to improve state Annual Yearly Progress targets that Salem currently is falling short. The board approved the Instructional Effectiveness report and then adopted the Assessment Plan. The board heard from the guidance counselors and Susan Jadwin stated that there was 29 new members to the National Honor Society to bring the school total to 50. These students must have over a 3.5 GPA. Jennifer Hurt then explained that Salem has 69 students with dual enrollment with SBU to earn college credits. Students can earn up to 24 credits through the dual enrollment program. Hurt also said that last year that there was $58,225 in local scholarships given to students. The board approved the counselors report and also the transportation report before going into closed session where the board employed Mike Fry as a bus driver; Sherri Riechard as the junior high and senior high nurse; and in foodservice, Michelle Warner and Jane Fuller. The meeting was then adjourned.

The City of Salem Board of Alderman will conduct their meeting tonight at the City Hall Council Chambers located at 202 North Washington and will begin at 7:00 pm. After approval of the consent agenda during bids, The City of Salem had previously requested bids for a dump body, a spreader box and snow plow for the new truck, and they had also requested a bid for another spreader box for another truck. Street Superintendent Ben Bryson will present the bids received. Alderman Brad Nash, Kenneth Nash, Jim Jackson and Jim McDaniels will discuss miscellaneous items involving the City of Salem. McDaniels would also like to discuss the Carol Midyett Memorial Park and an update on storm water ditches. Mayor Gary Brown will then give his comments on issues involving the City of Salem. In new and miscellaneous business, Salem Police Chief Jadwin wishes to set the hours of Halloween between 6:00 to 8:00 pm with the Board of Alderman’s approval. After approval of the bills presented by City Clerk Mary Happel, the Board may then vote to go into Closed Session. The meeting of the City of Salem Board of Alderman is open to the public.

Andy Kissir ran for 120 yards on 14 carries and scored three times to help lead the Salem Tigers to a 27-15 win over Owensville. Kissir also had two interceptions in the game for Salem who now stand at 5-3 on the year and 1-0 in District play. Salem will be at Sullivan Friday night.

Zac Robinson tallied 227 yards and a touchdown on 22-of-35 passing to lead No. 16 Oklahoma State past Missouri, 33-17, in a Big 12 matchup at Boone Pickens Stadium. Blaine Gabbert threw for 332 yards and a touchdown with three interceptions for the Tigers (4-2, 0-2). Derrick Washington had a rushing TD, while Danario Alexander amassed 186 yards and a touchdown on nine grabs.

Andy McDonald finished with two goals and an assist and Ty Conklin stopped 26 shots as the St. Louis Blues took a 5-0 win over the Anaheim Ducks. T.J. Oshie had a goal and an assist, while Patrik Berglund and Carlo Colaiacovo also tallied for St. Louis. The Blues face Pittsburgh Tuesday.

Two of Ryan Succop's four field goals came in the fourth quarter, lifting Kansas City to a hard-fought 14-6 decision over the struggling Redskins for its first win of the season. Larry Johnson rushed for a season-high 83 yards on 23 carries, while Matt Cassel played mistake-free football for the Chiefs (1-5), throwing for 186 yards on 18-of-33 attempts in the club's first win since Week 13 last season.

Josh Scobee's 36-yard field goal in overtime gave Jacksonville a 23-20 victory over the still winless Rams. Marc Bulger resumed his starting role behind center after coming in as a backup last week and finished with 213 yards on 22-of-34 attempts. Steven Jackson had 128 yards from scrimmage for St. Louis (0-6).

The Kansas City Royals announced Friday that utility player Willie Bloomquist and right-hander Roman Colon had successful surgeries. Bloomquist underwent routine arthroscopic cleanup procedures on both knees. Colon had an arthroscopic procedure on his right knee. Both are expected to be ready for spring training.

Graveside services for James Gordon Clayton Jr. of Salem, age 57, will be held this morning at 11:00 at North Lawn Cemetery with Full Military Honors. Memorials may be made to a fund for the Grandchildren. All the arrangements are under the direction of Wilson Mortuary in Salem.

A memorial service for Everett Boulch of Salem, age 77, will be held Wednesday morning at 11:00 at the Salem Freewill Baptist Church with Charles Bacon, Jr. officiating. All arrangements are under the direction of the James and Gahr Mortuary in Salem.

Funeral services for Lorraine A Snelson of Morgans Point Resort, Texas formerly of Rolla, age 90, will be held Tuesday morning at 11:00 at the James & Gahr Mortuary in Rolla. Visitation will be 10:00 until time of service. Interment will be in the Thomas Fairview Cemetery in Rolla. Memorials are suggested to Hospice.

Funeral services for Mary Magglena Land of Rolla, age 84, will be held Tuesday morning at 11:00 at the Wilson Mortuary Chapel in Salem. Visitation will be held tonight from 6:00 to 8:00. Interment will be in the Cedar Grove cemetery. Memorials may be made to the American Heart or Diabetes Association.

Interment for Terry L. Blankenship of Salem, age 47, will be held at a later date in the New Hope Cemetery. All the arrangements are under the direction of the Dent County Memorial Chapel.
