The Dent County Commissioners held their regular meeting at the Dent County Courthouse Thursday morning. At the meeting District 1 Commissioner Bobby Simpson reported that grading would be done on Dent County Roads 418, 622, 663 and 666. Simpson also said that brush would be cut on Dent County Road 543 and rock would be hauled to the crusher.  District 2 Commissioner J.J. Tune reported that grading would be done in the Boss area on Dent County Roads 403 and 430. Tune also said that grading would be done on Dent County Roads 215 and 312 and brush would be cut in the White River Trace area. Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles reported that he attended a South Central County Commissioners Meeting Wednesday in Houston, and he also attended a SEMA Area I Meeting and a Region I Homeland Security Oversight Committee Meeting Thursday afternoon in St. James. City of Salem Mayor Gary Brown came by the meeting to set up a meeting between the Board of Aldermen and the Commission to discuss personnel. The meeting will be held next Thursday at 10:00 in the City Administration Office’s Conference Room. At the previous meeting, Emergency Management Director Jack Emory stopped by the meeting to present his resignation to the Commission, his last day will be November 1st.  Also at that meeting, phone bids were taken for propane for the courthouse, and the bid was awarded to MFA Propane Company for $1.70 per gallon.  The next meeting of the Commission will be Monday morning at 9:00 and the meeting is open to the public.

In closed session Thursday night, the Salem R-80 Board of Education voted to employ Barb Abbot for Senior High foodservice, Sharon Hogan for Lower Elementary foodservice; Kim Edwards as the Lower Elementary paraprofessional, Lynda Cheatham as the District Nurse at the Lower Elementary, and Roland Todd as a Senior High custodian. They also voted for the district to enter into a contract with Monty Kitchen to purchase the former Prestige Golf Cart property at the corner of Dilworth and “J” Highway. The property includes a 2100 square foot building on approximately a one acre fenced lot for a purchase price of $76,000. According to Superintendent Steve Bryant, the building has several possible uses for the school district such as for district storage, an alternative program building, or even for preschool.  If everything proceeds as expected, R-80 could close on the transaction in March 2008. The meeting then adjourned.

On Monday, October 15th, following a lengthy investigation, Missouri State Highway Patrol troopers, with the assistance of the Dent County Sheriff’s Department and the South Central Drug Task Force, served a search warrant at the residence of 51-year old Joseph J. Adamick, located approximately five miles west of Salem, on Missouri Highway 32. During the search, officers located five drying marijuana plants, approximately 3/4 of a pound of processed marijuana, and paraphernalia. Adamick was arrested for felony possession of marijuana, cultivating or manufacturing marijuana, and possession of drug paraphernalia. Adamick was incarcerated in the Dent County Jail following his arrest.

An accident occurred on Wednesday, October 10th at 5:17 in the evening at the intersection of Highway 32 and Askins Street in Salem. According to the Salem Police report, a black 1989 Buick LeSabre driven by Michelle Delmain of Salem, was on the Wal-Mart parking lot at the intersection of Highway 32 and was attempting to cross Highway 32 northbound onto Askins. A grey 1992 Toyota Xtra Cab, driven by Robert Blaylock of Salem, was westbound on Highway 32 approaching the intersection. The Buick went into the intersection and both vehicles collided. The Buick continued westbound and went onto the sidewalk onto its side. Three persons were transported by ambulance to the Salem Memorial District Hospital and one by private vehicle. The Buick sustained extensive damage and was towed from the scene by Knights Towing. The Toyota sustained extensive damage and was towed from the scene by P & G Auto.

The Dent County Health Center is now giving flu shots at their office on a daily basis. That’s Monday through Friday from 8:00 to 4:30. Everyone is eligible. The Health Center will bill Medicare or Medicaid, but you MUST bring your card with you, or the cost is $20. For more information, contact the Dent County Health Center by calling 729-3106.

The Salem Football Tigers look for their fourth straight win as they host the Logan-Rogersville Wildcats tonight in their final regular season home game. It will be Senior Night and the contest will begin at 7:00. Salem enters the start of district play with a 3-4 record while the wildcats come into the contest with a 4-3 record. The Missouri Tigers will try to get back on the winning track as they will host the Red Raiders of Texas Tech tomorrow starting at 2:30. Texas Tech is the third straight ranked foe Mizzou has faced. Missouri has won four of the five meetings since the formation of the Big 12. You can hear the game on KSMO starting at 1:30.

The Blues will host the Minnesota Wild Saturday night at 7:30 at the Scottrade Center. The Blues, winners of their last four games, are in second place behind Detroit by three points, but have played three fewer games. You can hear the game on KSMO Radio.

The St. Louis Rams will try to avoid the worst start in franchise history this Sunday, when they head to Seattle for a NFC West clash with the Seahawks at Qwest Field. The Oakland Raiders could leave the McAfee Coliseum field following their game with the Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday with a share of first place in the AFC West, but they will have to end a losing streak against AFC Wets opponents of 16 straight games to do so.

Josh Beckett struck out 11 over eight dominating innings as the Boston Red Sox staved off elimination with a 7-1 win over the Cleveland Indians in Game 5 of the American League Championship Series at Jacobs Field. Kevin Youkilis homered and drove in three runs for the Red Sox, who now head back to Boston for Game 6 on Saturday.

Funeral services for James J. Forgey of St. James, age 87, will be held this morning at 11:00 at the James and Gahr Mortuary in St. James. Interment will be in the St. James Cemetery with Full Military Honors. Memorials are suggested to the Methodist Church in St. James.

Funeral services for Wayne E. Lunn of Tucumari, New Mexico, formerly of Salem, age 83, will be held this morning at 10:00 at the Wilson Mortuary. Interment will be in the Mt. Hermon Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Lunn family in lieu of flowers.

Funeral services for Elmer L.“Tug” Martin of Viburnum, age 86, will be held Saturday at 1:00 at Wilson Mortuary. Visitation will be from 11:00 until service time. Interment will be in the Boss Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the Elmer Martin Family in lieu of flowers.
