See some of Missouri’s first free-ranging elk in nearly 150 years through a self-guided driving tour at the Missouri Department of Conservation’s (MDC) Peck Ranch Conservation Area (CA). Peck Ranch CA is in northwest Carter County and eastern Shannon County. Over the past two years, MDC has been working with local communities, local landowners, conservation groups and others to restore almost 70 elk from Kentucky to a 346-square-mile restoration zone in this rugged area of the Ozarks. The heart of the restoration zone is Peck Ranch CA. More than a dozen elk calves born at Peck Ranch CA in 2011 and 2012 have added to the numbers of this once-native animal. The tour route begins at the Peck Ranch CA office and is marked along the way. Driving tours are open sunrise to sunset seven days a week, unless closed because of inclement weather. Driving tours will also be closed for deer hunting in the area Nov. 2-4, Nov. 10-20, and Dec. 1-2. Gravel roads on Peck Ranch CA may not be accessible to vehicles without adequate ground clearance. Some roads may be impassible at times due to high water at stream crossings. People are invited to take photographs, and get out of vehicles for better views, but should not disturb elk or other wildlife in any way. For more info, call 855-263-2355.

Colonel Ronald Replogle, superintendent of the Missouri State Highway Patrol, encourages motorists to adopt an attitude of “safety first” whenever they are behind the wheel. This year, traffic crash fatalities are currently nine percent higher when compared to the same time period in 2011. In Missouri, 63 percent of those killed were not wearing a seat belt in vehicles requiring restraints. Every fatality is someone’s friend, sister, brother, parent, or child. The sudden loss of a family member forever alters the lives of those who loved them. Over the next few weeks, the Patrol will use a Click It 4 Life seat belt campaign to bring attention to the importance using them. Troopers will provide an informative leaflet with seat belt facts to drivers stopped during enforcement operations. The chance of being in a traffic crash in your lifetime is virtually 100 percent. In Missouri, one person is killed in a traffic crash every 11.1 hours. A Missouri driver’s chance of being killed in a traffic crash if not wearing a seat belt is 42 times greater than that of a driver who is buckled up. Using the lap/shoulder belts cuts your chances of being killed or seriously injured in a crash 45-50 percent. For drivers involved in traffic crashes not killed or injured, 97.5 percent were wearing their seat belt at the time of the crash. Of course, no matter how safely you drive, you can’t control other drivers. Thus, the Patrol encourages motorists to protect themselves from all types of hazardous drivers by making sure everyone in the vehicle is properly restrained in a seat belt.

Overcoming an injury to Carlos Beltran and a lengthy weather delay, the St. Louis Cardinals gained the upper hand in the National League Championship Series with a 3-1 victory over the San Francisco Giants in Game 3 from Busch Stadium. Matt Carpenter belted a two-run homer in his first at-bat in place of Beltran, while Kyle Lohse worked out of a number of jams over a 5 2/3-inning stint as the defending World Series champion Cardinals took a 2-1 lead in the best-of-seven set after waiting out a stoppage of nearly 3 1/2 hours during the bottom of the seventh caused by storms. Beltran left after one inning with a left knee strain the outfielder suffered while grounding into a double play in his only plate appearance. Despite issuing a season-high five walks along with seven hits, Lohse held the Giants to one run before turning things over to the St. Louis bullpen. Four Cardinal relievers combined for 3 1/3 shutout innings, with closer Jason Motte perfect over the final two to notch his second save of this NLCS. Game 4 will take place tonight at Busch Stadium with Adam Wainwright getting the call against Tim Lincecum. You can hear the game on KSMO Radio at 6:30.
