An accident occurred at 3:22 Monday afternoon in Dent County on Highway 32 about three miles east of Salem that took the life of two Salem teenagers. According to the highway patrol report, a 2007 Chevrolet Cobalt driven eastbound by 17-year old Mackenzie Miller of Salem struck the rear of a 1997 Toyota Corolla driven eastbound by 16-year old Bailey Stephens of Salem. The Cobalt then crossed the centerline and was struck by a 1999 Chevrolet Lumina driven westbound by 35-year old Donna Nunley of Bunker. Mackenzie Miller and an occupant in the Cobalt, 14-year old Adam Miller of Salem, were pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics and their bodies were transported to the Wilson Mortuary. Donna Nunley suffered moderate injuries and an occupant in the Lumina, 34-year old Fredrick Nunley of Bunker, suffered minor injuries. Both were taken to the Salem Memorial District Hospital by ambulance. Another occupant in the Lumina, 14-year old Shayna Nunley of Bunker, suffered serious injuries and was taken to the Salem Memorial District Hospital and then was flown by Air Evac to the St. Johns Children Hospital. Everyone involved was wearing a seat restraint at the time of the accident. The Cobalt and Lumina were both totaled in the accident and were removed from the scene by Whitaker’s Towing. The Toyota sustained moderate damage but was driven from the scene.

The Dent County Commissioner met for their regular meeting Monday morning at the Dent County Courthouse. In the road report, District 1 Commissioner Dennis Purcell reported that the grading was going to be done on Dent County Roads 4180, 4230, 4235, 4237, 5140 and 5530. He stated that materials were going to be added to Dent County Roads 2460 and 2470, and brush was going to be cut on Dent County Road 5015. Purcell mentioned that a worker would be going to Springfield to retrieve oil for the Dura-Patcher to repair chip and seal roads. District 2 Commissioner Gary Larson said that grading was going to be done on Dent County Roads 2240, 3090 and 5280; while materials will be added and grading done on Dent County Road 2160. Larson also said that the materials would be added to county road 2330 and brush would be cut on county road 5260. Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles said that he attended the MRPC and a host of other meetings on Thursday last week. He said that the Transportation Advisory Committee would need to update their priorities by February, and that MoDOT representative Troy Pinkerton said that Missouri had the 7^th largest highway system in the US but were 47^th in funding to maintain that system. Pinkerton did say that the three Dent County bridges would be replaced in 2012. The Route NN Bridge will be replaced starting in February over Dry Fork, the Highway 32-72 East Bridge at Spring Creek will be replaced starting in April, and the Route H Bridge would be replaced in mid–May. A community hearing will be held prior to the start of the work. Skiles went on to say that Donald Dodd was elected to serve as the chairperson of the TAC for the next year. Skiles said that the Public Housing Authority meeting he attended reviewed the clean audit report they received, and he said that a program was held on the cleaning up and use of brownfields at the MRPC meeting. Skiles went on to say that the MRPC also received a clean audit from a private auditor, and he said that from now on, the late additions to the consent agenda would be presented in written form for the members to review and comment on before approval. At the last meeting, Dent County Assessor Brenda Bell said that her office would have new forms this year and taxpayers may have questions when they receive them. They are welcome to call her office at 729-6010. Dent County Collector Dennis Medlock came in and presented the book totals to the commission. Discussion was held on the late Richard Robb’s personal property and the commission approved the recommendation to accept payment of $169 for the final payment of the deceased. The next meeting of the Dent County Commissioners will be held Thursday morning at 9:00 at the courthouse and the meeting is open to the public.

At the Missouri Community Betterment Association meeting held Monday night in Jefferson City, the City of Salem took 2^nd place in Category 5 behind Higginsville. This is the third straight second place finish for Salem in the MCBA Awards for their category. The 3rd Place Award in the competition was captured by Lamar, Trenton took 4^th place and Eldon came in 5^th place. The Grand Prize Winner was Clinton. It is their third Grand Prize Award as they also won back in 2008 and in 1996.

An accident occurred at 5:30 Saturday night in Osage County on Highway 63 about half a mile north of County Road 527. According to the highway patrol report, a 2010 Harley Davidson ridden by 50-year old Richard Barred of Salem failed to negotiate a curve, ran off the right side of the roadway down a steep embankment, and overturned. Barred suffered minor injuries and was taken to the St. Mary’s Hospital by ambulance. The Harley sustained moderate damage and was removed from the scene by Beck Motors of Freeburg.

The 7^th Grade Salem Football Tigers scored three times in the first half and intercepted four passes in route to a 20-8 win at West Plains last Thursday. Zac Eplin scored on a 33-yard run in the first quarter with Logan Woolf adding a two-point conversion. Eli Floyd scored in the second quarter on a 61-yard run and Eplin scored in the second on a 31-yard run. Both conversions failed. Eplin, Woolf, Eric Wood, and Dalton Cook all had interceptions for the Tigers. The 7^th graders finished 3-2 on the year.

The Salem 8th Grade Tigers lost last Thursday as the West Plains Zizzers scored twice in the first quarter, twice in the second quarter, and once in each of the third and fourth quarters en route to a 40-12 win.  Salem scored in the third as Dylan Wisdom ran in from one yard out and Derek McClain scored as time expired in the fourth on a 45-yard run. Salem’s 8^th grade team finished the year with a 3-3 record.

The Denver Broncos traded wide receiver Brandon Lloyd to the St. Louis Rams on Monday in exchange for a conditional pick in the 2012 NFL Draft. Lloyd led the league with 1,448 yards on 77 receptions and scored 11 touchdowns last season.

Memorial service for Edith H. Lutzen of Rolla, age 89, will be held Wednesday at 1:00 at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Rolla. Memorials may be made to the Immanuel Lutheran School Tuition Assistance Fund. All arrangements are under the direction of the James and Gahr Mortuary in Rolla.

Funeral services for Albert Halbert of Steelville, age 84, will be held Wednesday at 2:00 at the Britton Bennett Funeral Home in Steelville. Visitation will be today from 2:00 to 9:00. Interment will be in the Freeman Cemetery in Cherryville. Memorials may be to the Freeman Cemetery.
